Her whole life is a thing. She had a crazy upbringing and early life.

Barr was born in Salt Lake City, to a working-class Jewish family. She is the oldest of four children born to Helen (née Davis), a bookkeeper and cashier, and Jerome Hershel "Jerry" Barr, who[6] worked as a salesman.[7] Her father's family were Jewish emigrants from Russia, and her maternal grandparents were Jewish emigrants from Austria-Hungary and Lithuania.[6] Her paternal grandfather changed his surname from "Borisofsky" to "Barr" upon entering the United States.[7]

Her Jewish upbringing was influenced by her devoutly Orthodox Jewish maternal grandmother.[7] Barr's parents kept their Jewish heritage secret from their neighbors and were partially involved in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.[7] Barr has stated, "Friday, Saturday, and Sunday morning I was a Jew; Sunday afternoon, Tuesday afternoon, and Wednesday afternoon we were Mormons."[8]

When Barr was three years old, she got Bell's palsy on the left side of her face. Barr said, "[so] my mother called in a rabbi to pray for me, but nothing happened. Then my mother got a Mormon preacher, he prayed, and I was miraculously cured". Years later Barr learned that Bell's palsy was usually temporary and that the Mormon preacher came "exactly at the right time".[7]

At six years old, Barr discovered her first public stage by lecturing at LDS churches around Utah and even was elected president of a Mormon youth group.[7]

At 16, Barr was hit by a car; the incident left her with a traumatic brain injury.[7] Her behavior changed so radically that she was institutionalized for eight months at Utah State Hospital.[9] While institutionalized she had a baby, which she placed through adoption.[10]

In 1970, when Barr was 18 years old, she moved out by informing her parents she was going to visit a friend in Colorado for two weeks, but never returned.[9]

Edit: Formatting

The car accident is interesting. The other week Bill Maher did a whole 5 minute closer on his HBO show about Rosanne Barr and how they had been friends forever and that she's a total socialist and he doesn't get why she's like this now. He just kept saying wtf, a few years ago you were as left as it gets etc.

Maybe there is something going on aside from just racism. I always thought she was a progressive until someone brought her up a few months ago.

It's not just her. Sam Kinison and Ralphie May both had brain injuries that changed their personalities before they became stand up comedians.

I'm honestly confused. I used to watch the old episodes of Roseanne and I remember her seeming progressive. There an episode about abortion, there were gay characters, and I remember them addressing racism too. There was even a line from Darlene about making her mom mad by dating a republican.

I remember them addressing racism too

There's an episode where their youngest kid DJ doesn't want to kiss a girl in the school play because she's black and he doesn't like how she looks. Dan is somewhat in agreement, and Roseanne is disgusted by his views on it. Ironic, considering today's events.

Funnily enough in the new show, DJ apparently ended up having a kid with that girl.

ABC should sign a deal for a new sitcom staring Laurie Metcalf and John Goodman about a husband, his sister-in-law, and their families dealing with the loss of his wife, Sueanne.

Comment deleted1 month ago(More than 106 children)

Is this what the story was for when he came on Two and a Half men? I never really watched it

1.0k points · 1 month ago

This is exactly what happened, yes.

Turns out these stupid-ass shows are a lot funnier when the star is coked-out to the gills.

Are you referring to Charlie Sheen, Jon Cryer or Angus Jones?

I'd say Charlie Sheen was the unhinged glue that held that production together from a sort of art-imitates-life and schadenfreude watchable standard for discerning viewers. I'm sure those other guys and certainly Ashton Kutcher have their fans, maybe excluding post born again real hard Angus.

One thing to keep in mind is stations.

This was on ABC. Most of the people who died on LOST were written out after getting DUI's in Hawaii. You don't fuck around on an ABC show, period.

CBS? Shit they had Charlie Sheen out doing every drug in the world, spreading HIV to half of Los Angeles, what did he get? A raise, every single year the show was on.

It really is important to know who your boss is.

41 points · 1 month ago

Also remember Sheen has the Michael J Fox clause in his contract. If he became “ill” they would have to buy him out of his contract.

He ended up walking away with a very sweet severance package after all the shit he pulled.

Edit: spelling

He's got a great agent. For his shitty FX show he had a deal that if he made it to 12 (or whatever number of) episodes then he was automatically renewed for 100 total episodes.

All Roseanne had to do was not say something stupid and she could go on making millions of dollars

Except this is exactly how she has built her career.

Since her stand-up in the 80s, it's just been a series of huge successes due to her outlandishness. Then she goes too far. Then everyone hates her. Then people forget about her. Then she comes back with a new thing. Repeat ad nauseum.

Now here's Tiny Toons making fun of her national anthem performance.

ABC had a ticking time bomb on their hands with Roseanne. She has been saying stupid stuff for years, but that's her fault for getting her own show cancelled

ABC cancelled the show way too fast to not be prepared for this situation. They probably told her straight up to not fuck around anymore and I bet she thought she was protected because of her ratings. There was no bullshit from ABC on this.

Edit: and crewman, yes, they are out of gigs too along with anybody else attached to the show.

4.8k points · 1 month agoGilded1

Yeah, I'm sure John Goodman and Laurie Metcalf will be fine, but what the fuck has the original Becky actress been doing the past two decades? For her, this is probably like winning the lottery and then watching someone burn the ticket in front of her eyes before she can cash it in.

Emma Rose Kenney still has Shameless under her belt too.

She called her manager and quit the show before it got cancelled. Sounds like some of the cast got out ahead of this even before ABC did.

Syndication has probably made her life quite fine. Sure, more money is always great, but I doubt she's strapped for cash with syndication.

Now the rest of the crew who it might have been a good gig this hurts. I don't know how much of the crew is from the original tapings or not.

Edit: I've been made aware that lots of networks have now pulled syndication as well. Even Hulu pulled episodes. This really hurts the entire cast and crew from decades ago who received royalties. She fucked so many people, it's sad.

172 points · 1 month ago

For people in the crew this is the norm. Most sitcoms are short lived and people jump from job to job constantly. It's the life.

In a shocking twist Roseanne has now been made the head of InfoWars and ABC just announced they're greenlighting a sitcom starring Alex Jones.

It would be like an Office/Parks and rec show where Alex Jones plays a normal guy who said he started his whole character as a joke to make it into a comedy central type of character, but it grew on his own and he kept doing it because he really needed the money. The premise would be how he tries to come clean, but the GOP and other lobbyist etc threaten him with lawsuits, and even death if he ever speaks out.

I think you kind of missed that these types of people won't believe ANYTHING on Google. I have a conservative brother I've complained about on here before. To him all Google results that disagree with him are "liberal lies" but then he will post any Fox News article that agrees with him. I remember my wife saying I should ask him what makes his sources more reliable than mine and when I did ask him that he said if I can't see difference between made up articles and real ones that he's posting then I'm just a sheep that laps up anything the liberal media feeds him.

So yeah... that's what you're up against.. even with a "simple google search"

341 points · 1 month ago

I've said before on here, I have a co-worker who literally doesn't believe there are guilty pleas in the Mueller investigation. That there's a secret government being run by the Democrats that's more powerful than the actual government pulling all the strings and either forcing guilty pleas or putting out fake news to every media outlet. Totally agree. They had one of the actors on a radio show just the other morning. She seemed so excited to have a good gig, and was ready for season two. I don't watch the show, but was genuinely happy for her. Now that's taken away because someone else couldn't keep their mouth shut.

For the sake of the cast and crew (minus Rosanne herself) I hope they convince ABC to spin off the show minus the Rosanne character. The character was headed into surgery so have her die due to complications. Call the new show The Conners. Zero involvement from Rosanne from that point on.

  • Original series: Dan dies twice.

  • Relaunch: Roseanne dies.

Would be funny. They should do it.

Roseanne Barr probably has enough rights to the entire concept of the show and its world that she could nix that. Or at the very least she'd still be getting money from it, then ABC would still be generating money for her and might still be under fire.

She isn't the credited creator. She's been an executive producer for a long time, but I don't think she owns any of the characters.

Lol no kidding. Roseanne is your work schedule.

I think in the coming months we're gonna read all sorts of shit about Barr being a nightmare on and off the set. I get a feeling this show was falling apart already and Barr just inadvertently gave it a final push.

Wanda Sykes quit over the Twitter comments before it was cancelled. Being both African American and LGBT I feel like she probably gave her a chance but was ready to go if she did anything stupid.

55 points · 1 month ago

This is what people choose to ignore when bitching about feelings and politics and being pc and all that other shit.

Wanda is hilarious and has options but even ignoring her and just making it personal. How would you like to show up to work for a person that flat out hates two or three things about you as a person, about your identity that you can't change and do not affect your work at all?

"Suck it up buttercup!"/"Just get another job!" doesn't cut it, and that's why protections and stuff have to be put in place. because people fucking suck and can really ruin someone's life if there isn't some legislation to make workplace harassment illegal and protections for certain classes. It doesn't affect me is a phrase that should die in a fire.

I know Wanda quit, and she can afford to do that. This was kind of tangential.

Dearest Roseanne The Conners

Pilot Re-Boot

During the final episode of Season 9, when Roseanne reveals that the entire season was written as a book based on her life and family, she changed certain elements of what she had not liked; most notably, that Dan had actually died after having his heart attack in "The Wedding", near the end of season 8.

In Season 10, Dan is alive and well and reads an unpublished memoir of Roseanne's where he states that the book would have been a success had she not killed off the "most interesting character"; vaguely implying that the Season 9 finale revelations were the actual details made-up for Roseanne's book.

In fact, what becomes apparent is that Roseanne actually died of a heart attack at the beginning of Season 10 and Dan was trying to complete Roseanne's unfinished memoir by writing its concluding chapter. He realizes, however, that he is completely unable to write her story for her and so, in substitute, the family (i.e., ensemble cast) commits to living their lives out loud, the way Roseanne always did.

Run title: Dearest Roseanne The Conners

Edit: /u/ksavage68 re-titled the show - fantastic idea.

They did that in the 80s with the show Valerie (with Valerie Harper as the mother) - they killed her character off after a contract dispute, and changed the show's name to The Hogan's Family after season 2 or 3 IIRC.

26 more replies

Back in the late 80s/early 90s, there was a sitcom starring Valerie Harper called ''Valerie'' that was a pretty big hit. As I recall, Harper got into some sort of lawsuit with the network, so they killed off her character, hired Sandy Duncan to play an aunt that came to live with the family and take care of the kids, and finally renamed the show ''Valerie's Family''. After a season or two, it was eventually renamed ''The Hogan Family''. I could see something similar working with the cast of Roseanne. We already know Aunt Jackie, and she practically lives there anyway.

They should rework the show with John Goodman and Laurie Metcalf as the focus of the series. Roseanne Barr is expendable. The show has a solid cast without her. They can write her out with a car crash, or maybe have her be a victim of a shooting at a grocery store to be topical.

Edit: A user below found the episode where this basically happened already, in season 2 of the series, way back in 1990. Roseanne's sister Jackie acts as surrogate mom while Roseanne is gone for three days.

Thanks, user who I can't name or the automod will delete my comment!

Nah, keep the show and the same characters, but have Wanda Sykes play Roseanne's character.

No elaboration, no flowery language, no long explanation... just a concise "fuck no we're not doing this" and done

Something like this costs ABC (which is a division of the Mouse) far more money and negative attention than it would benefit even if exec's liked the racism and anti-Semitic conspiracy theories. Which they obviously don't, but no redeeming value whatsoever makes termination an easy call.

I work in TV ratings. This is not true. Roseanne was averaging better ratings than the NBA Playoffs. It was the #1 show on television. The Cavs game 7 that just aired had some of the highest ratings in a long ass time, maybe ever for a conference final. Didn't reach Roseanne ratings.

This absolutely is not a business decision. I will be surprised if it sticks, too, because ABC's local affiliates really liked selling that show.

Wow I didn't realize it's so popular

It was only a little less popular than NFL on Sundays, which is the most popular television programming by far. Roseanne averaged about 8% of all people who have televisions watching it, while baout 12% of people who own televisions would watch NFL.

As a comparison, Brooklyn nine-nine averaged about 1.5% of homes with a TV watching, and Big Bang theory gets about 2.5%. A regular season NBA game usually is around 1%, but a titanic match up during the regular season (like Cavs vs Celtics with Kyrie) would get up to around 5-6%. And Roseanne was around 8.

Please, Donald Trump, I beg you to comment on how unfair ABC is being to Roseanne.

Didn't he call her up personally to congratulate her on her great premiere ratings?

You can’t just go around saying whatever you want on Twitter.... who does she think she is, the president of the United States???

Can we take a moment to note how incredibly selfish this is of her? She just put a lot of people out of jobs because she can't control herself on Twitter. Not only is she a racist piece of shit, but she is actively hurting her co-workers careers.

edit: To be clear I was more thinking about the crew and staff, the everyday people working on the show as opposed to the actors. Although the actors are hurt by it too.

And she’s held to a higher standard than the president. That’s some shit

Everyone on Roseanne had a comfy job this morning. A tweet happens and you lose your job. Kind of nuts but the right thing to do.

68 more replies

I took a look at her twitter feed for the first time after seeing this news. I had thought she was just conservative, but she's like full on, conspiracy theorist nuts. Wow.

And there's really no other way to interpret the tweet in question other than being extremely racist. Good for ABC for canceling the show.

Holy shit, I did not think they would do that. They had huge ratings. Can't wait for all the "stupid snowflake liberals!!"

1.4k points · 1 month ago · edited 1 month ago

Honestly, it’s the only route they could go. This wasn’t even something that could be spun as a misinterpretation of racism on Roseanne’s part, she just flat out called a former WH staff member an ape. Anything less than cancellation would have caused a huge backlash

Hasn't she done that multiple times before?

She has, but ABC swore that they had her tight on a leash and that she wouldn’t cause controversy.... apparently they forgot what happens when the season is done filming

ABC swore that they had her tight on a leash and that she wouldn’t cause controversy

Hmm maybe you shouldn't hire gigantic pieces of shit in the first place, regardless of how much money they can make you.

Just maybe.

Like, did everyone forget who the fuck Roseanne was?

I don't think that many people knew. It's not like she has been an A-list celeb the last 20 years. There are tons of washed up people that have made disgusting comments on social media, it just doesn't always get that much attention.

Holy smokes some of the comments in T_D about this are alarming.

They own the media. I feel like this is just going to come down to taking up arms one day soon

I've had the bug-out bag ready for almost 2 years. I'm ready when they are.

It’s a special kinda of crazy when your people control most of the country from the top to the bottom, and yet you’re still so paranoid and crazy that you’re ready for “war” at a moments notice. Those people are greatly disturbed.

They control the presidency, both houses of Congress, most governors, the last several heads of the FBI (minus McCabe) were republicans, the head of the justice department is a republican, his deputy AG is a republican, yet somehow liberals control the nation and they need violent revolution to take the country back.

Talk about a persecution complex

The Special Counsel is a Republican, too.

Didn't this show have monster ratings? Anyone know just how big it was? Crazy they cancelled it!

The Americans
599 points · 1 month ago · edited 1 month ago

It premiered at 18.6 million viewers, and ended with 10.58 million.

In comparison, the juggernaut Big Bang Theory started this season with 17.65 million, ended with 15.5 million viewers.

Either way, it’s ratings were phenomenal for modern TV. Up there with the big hitters like GoT, BBT, and TWD. It’s why it’s so shocking they actually cancelled it.

Isn't ABC part of Disney?

The House of Mouse doesn't like to have racism on any of its property and has pretty much erased much of the old racist content they used to have.

116 points · 1 month ago

Yeah ABC has no choice but to kill the show. Disney isn't going to damage its brand image just to keep a popular TV show.

It did. From here:
"Roseanne has been averaging a 5.5 rating among adults 18-49 and 19.3 million viewers with live-plus-three day lifts. With a full week of time-shifting, those numbers climb to a 6.4 rating in the key demo and 22.1 million viewers. Either way, Roseanne is the highest-rated and most-watched series of the broadcast season, eclipsing NBC's This Is Us and* CBS' Big Bang *Theory — which had been in a heated battle for top status."

Damn, that was fast! Well done, ABC.

This is what happens when you’re a racist moron, Roseanne.

She Michael Richards'd herself after a reboot and while it was still on air. Plus it had insane ratings. That's some next level stupidity.

657 points · 1 month ago

I imagine the cast and crew are fucking pissed. She just put a lot of people out of work.

161 points · 1 month ago

The cast will probably get some compensation for this (I'd be shocked if it weren't in their contracts). The crew I feel bad for, though, who just got royally screwed.

To be fair to Michael Richards, this is way worse. Michael had an unhinged live outburst in a comedy club that’s traditionally seen as a “safe space” for unhinged rants. I’m not excusing what he said at all, just saying it’s way different than picking up your phone and consciously and thoughtfully typing all those tweets out.

She didn’t Michael Richards herself, she Trumped herself. Only this time it actually came with the consequences that we should be able to impose on our president.

127 points · 1 month ago · edited 1 month ago

I think in Michael Richards' case, he broke down and did a racist bit and doubled down on how racist it was as a joke. Except it wasn't funny and that was a horrible decision in what at least used to be considered a "safe space" (that was one of the first times a cell phone video caught something like that in the act). Not excusing it, not saying he shouldn't have done it, but I agree with you, this is way worse. His bit was basically supposed to be about the power of the N-word but it was really sloppy and offensive. But it was clearly a one-time thing, even after that a lot of black comedians and such came out in defense of him.

Also, it's not like this is the first time Roseanne Barr has said shit like this either, she has been saying crazy, ignorant and even racist shit on Twitter before - this was just SO offensive and SO blatant that it was a slap in the face to everybody who didn't see how she was already, and there was no plausible deniability ("oh, she really meant X Y Z".) And she thought that everybody would agree with her (and frankly, a large part of her viewerbase probably does, the alt-right people they intended to appeal to with the show).

So far, it seems that the Trumps are really the only ones able to Trump without consequence. So many others are finding their careers sidetracked or outright derailed for embracing Trumpism, yet somehow Trump himself has managed to harness that outrage into failing upwards.

Well, relatively fast.. She's been saying crazy shit on Twitter since before it started airing.

They thought millions of dollars would be a good enough leash for her to tone it down. Guess you can’t cage crazy.

The thing that gets me is how selfish it is, she just put a lot of people out of work and cost ABC a lot of money.

Yeah. She’ll be fine, but lots of folks on that production probably really needed that job.
