Shooting in 2019?

FX is getting really comfortable with those long delays between seasons.

level 2
341 points · 3 months ago

It has to do with Donald’s schedule not FX’s from what I read, he a busy dude.

level 3

Of course, but I’m just saying FX, almost entirely across the board, has very long hiatuses lately.

I’m not complaining, I’m just pointing it out. It’s unusual for American television.

level 4

Agreed, it took forever for Archer to start back up and Taboo won’t be back until 2019, I choose to believe they do it to ensure a quality product is being put out there.

level 5
12 points · 3 months ago

That didn't really work for late seasons of Archer.

level 6

Yeah, I gave them a pass considering how good every other season was. This season has been interesting though, still on the fence but leaning toward meh.

level 4

Maybe they found it doesn't really matter for their content how long the breaks are.

level 5

I realize it's not an FX show, but I think the extra time off between seasons 1 and 2 of Westworld killed a lot of the momentum they had following that finale.

level 6

I mean that's cause it had such a continuous and complex plot to follow but with a shown like Atlanta, on most episodes you need little to no context to enjoy

level 6

yeah i can't even get around to watching it even though i was following season 1 really closely

level 7

It is friggen awesome get on that

level 8

Haha yeah I should. I really feel like Westworld season 1 was best watched weekly. Same feeling about season 2?

level 4

I know he's pretty controversial right now, but didn't Louis CK's show go through the same thing in later seasons? It seems like the less formulaic and more bold the show, the longer it takes to crank out solid storylines.

level 5

Yeah, there was a break between seasons three and four that was about 18 months.

level 6

Then he got caught in a lie about masturbating in front of women who felt like they had to endure the sight of a balding fat man jerking off in front of them because he could crush their careers if he felt like it.

Now we don't know when the next season will air!

/s

level 7

FX (rightfully) cut ties with him altogether after that bullshit. There won't be another season.

That news really got to me. I loved Louis CK-- his show, his stand-up-- and after all that, I just feel embarrassed as a former fan.

level 4
The Legend of Korra21 points · 3 months ago

They let their creators make the best work they can and still continually have great shows on.

level 4

I remember when a season was 26 weeks.

level 4

Curb Your Enthusiasm went 6 years between seasons. Ventures Bros has gone 4 and 2.5 years between seasons.

level 4

Nothing like HBO

Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit

level 10

This man has just committed suicide by reddit...

level 10

Whooo.. you’re opinion is trash.

level 8

This may be oddly specific, but have you watched The Leftovers on HBO? That’s really what solidified them for me as part of the “pinnacle of television perfection” that most people consider them as.

level 9

I’ve seen it. I saw Seasons 1 & 2, and haven’t seen Season 3 yet. It was really good actually, yeah.

level 10

Man, if you ever have the time, you got to finish it if you enjoyed seasons 1 & 2. It’s an incredibly good send-off for the show considering how it was cut short by HBO. I understand your frustration though, HBO is held in such high regard nowadays expressing dislike for it would probably been seen as trolling to most people.

level 8

I disagree but I don’t know why you are getting downvoted so hard for an opinion. I think the original ‘Fuck HBO’ comment did it. If you led with this, I would hope people wouldn’t be so reactionary. You qualify everything with it being an opinion of yours.

level 4

This is America

level 3

It's not just him. Brian Tyree Henry, Lakeith Stanfield and Hiro Murai all are in high demand now. Makes me worried that there won't be a season four just because everyone will have moved to bigger paydays.

level 4

Pay won’t be an issue. FX has the money if need be. But I do agree that the actors schedules are getting busier.

level 4

I think the biggest hinderance for a fourth season will be if Disney wants to keep it going. IIRC, Disney now owns FX and FXX and I’m not so sure Atlanta fits the image that Disney wants to have out there.

level 5

Disney the multimedia conglomerate =/= Disney the brand. Disney bought FX because it wants to broaden its media portfolio, not because it wants more channels to put Mickey Mouse on.

level 6

Right, but Disney as a multimedia conglomerate is focused on big franchises and properties that will maximize profit. As great Atlanta is, I don’t think it likely generates much in the way of profit/revenue. Hopefully I’m wrong.

level 7
BoJack Horseman13 points · 3 months ago

FX isn't about profit, if it was it would have been shut down long ago. Its shows are for winning awards, for prestige. It will only be canceled once it gets bad critical reception, or when it ends naturally,

level 8

True as fuck, I don't think the Americans gathers as much viewers as it should but FX keeps it on anyway because of critical acclaim

level 4

Hiro Murai's work on HBO's Barry is awesome!

level 4

And I'm happy that they're busy, because they're all really talented people and deserves to be getting work.

Don’t Earns girl is in Deadpool

level 3

I didn't like how little screen time Donald had in this seasons actually. I guess it is because of the solo stuff as well as other moves he's making

level 4

I felt that way at first but then I realized this season is exploring the cast not the scenery and it really opened up the experience. It has really put the humanistic touch on it for people who have no clue what it’s like to live in the hood, it shows how cyclical the opportunity to fail is in our society’s poverty stricken cities and how hard it is to achieve and maintain success especially when the people who should want you to succeed are the ones that keep knocking you down.

level 3

Why? What's he doing? It's not like he's like that Childish Gambino guy, now THAT guy gets around.

level 2

long delays

laughs in European

level 2

Yeah, I don't mind it though because FX has a really diverse lineup and they don't ever rush their showrunners. One of my favorite networks right now for that reason.

level 2

Well, it's 2018. A year between seasons isn't long. Even a year and a half isn't that long.

level 3

after shooting there’s lot more before it airs.

level 4

Not really. Atlanta started shooting in September and was on the air on March 1.

level 5

Well, look at it this way season ended in at the start of Nov in 2016. Now, you say they started in Sept of 2017. That's 10 months and add 6 months to that and that brings us to March of this year. 1 1/2 years seems reasonable for season 3. Just depends when they go into production really.

level 4
Breaking Bad2 points · 3 months ago

If they start shooting in January (as the article reports) the season is definitely coming out before the summer.

level 5
1 point · 3 months ago · edited 3 months ago

I think they might try and time it with the release of The Lion King in July next year.

level 2
2 points · 3 months ago · edited 3 months ago

To be honest we'd be lucky to get a 3rd season. Hiro got a dev deal at FX and there were rumors about the relationship between Glover and FX turning frosty due to Deadpool's cancellation.

level 2

I’m fine with it, better than making them rush everything

level 2

IIRC, I believe Donald Glover said something about how he doesn't like the idea of rushing to create. When he has the stories to tell, he will tell. I don't think that means he'll wait 20 years to put out a new season, but I don't think he'll be pressured to meet the demands of doing yearly seasons if he doesn't think it'll result in the best of content.

level 2

Season 2 started shooting early 2017, if they follow through with this season 3 schedule then we will basically be getting it a year later again. That would be surprising though considering all the projects the cast is involved in at the moment.

level 2

I mean.. that's next year. Not like this is a SFX intensive show. They could shoot and have it on air within the same year easily.

level 1

I badly want an episode with the culture clash of Paper Boi's European tour

level 2

I feel like they'll jump to a few months after they get back. We'll see Paper Boi with a new manager and Earn will be in sort of limbo without his manager gig and kid. Although the airport scene may have earned him some respect from PB. We'll see I guess.

level 3

I thought their last conversation implied that he wasn’t fired. Al said that Earn is the only one who knows what he’s about. And that he needs that...

level 4
11 points · 3 months ago

Hence the end credit song, "I Shall Be Released":

They say everything can be replaced

Yet every distance is not near

So I remember every face

Of every man who put me here

level 4
Comment deleted3 months ago(4 children)
level 5

But that ends up inadvertently helping both Earn and Al. This dude Clark now faces a possible felony for having an unregistered weapon in his bag in an airport. He won’t be making it to the European tour. That leaves the spot open for Al to headline as he and Earn agreed he should be.

level 6

Did you watch the end of the episode? Clark got on the plane. His manager took the fall somehow for the gun and got held back at TSA.

level 7

I don't think he took the fall, more like Clark did what Earn did. I mean, he knew exactly what the gun looked like. Doubt the TSA go around waving a gun they just found. And then the sneaky "yoo-hoo" at the end.

level 7

I did, I may have confused some of those final moments then. I’ll need to rewatch.

level 3

I think you didn't really understand what happened at the end of the last episode

level 3

Yeah I imagine the show is just focused on atlanta and so when they come back it will pick up again

level 1
27 points · 3 months ago

I'm glad that the rumors of the show ending were wrong. I'm not ready to say goodbye to these characters just yet, especially with the way the season ended.

level 2

Donald said in an interview a while back that he might be done with it after season 3 but we'll see.

level 3

That's very understandable, he's becoming an extremely busy guy and I would be perfectly fine if the series ended after the 3rd or 4th season. I also wouldn't be surprised if he puts it on hold for a while after the next one, kind of like what Aziz is doing with Master of None.

level 1

This show is getting really weird, like a black Black Mirror. Not that I'm complaining. The characters are good, and it's an interesting way of showcasing their stories, but I wonder how much more disconnected from reality it is going to get.

level 2

Out of curiosity, how would you say it's getting weird? I'm not in the music business but everything that has happened so far seems fairly realistic.

level 3

Probably the Teddy Perkins and Woods episodes.

level 4

Gotcha.

Woods was disconnected in terms of what was actually going on, but the symbolism seemed like it was pretty realistic (the whole running out of the woods equating to Paper Boi getting a reality check).

Teddy Perkins was definitely out of the ordinary in every way though.

EDIT: forgot a word

level 5

The woods episode is because the actor who plays paper boi, his actual mum died a little ways into his filming season 1 atlanta. So it's an examination of grief. That tribute at the end is to his mum

level 5
-30 points · 3 months ago(3 children)
level 6

Tbh I'm glad they've been fleshing out other characters, I think the show would suffer if it stayed Earn-centric

level 7

I am pretty sure they did it this way to work around Donald Glover's schedule.

level 8

Yeah I think that's pretty clear, but I thought it gave the show some fresh air it needed

level 4

Don't forget about the invisible car, and the weird sandwich guy, and black Justin Bieber, and the alligator.

level 4

The woods episode was a tribute to paper Bois real life mum that died shortly after they had begun filming season 1. It's an examination of grief

level 4

level 5

Was actually my favourite episode, it was a masterpiece in fucked up story telling.

level 5

How was the makeup bad? Weren’t the “Whoville” like prosthetics a metaphor for Michael Jackson’s features after the surgeries? A man who changed himself so much to try and appeal to the masses, that he inadvertently lost almost features that made him human? I think they made Teddy look fake intentionally. Michael Jackson looked surreal, so they made Teddy reflect that in a hyper exaggerated manner. I also don’t think the story was predictable, but that’s subjective so I can’t argue. I’d say it’s important to look at the meaning. We assumed Benny was a person that Teddy made up, and in a way he was. Teddy is who the world sees, the persona he created when out in public. Benny is his real self, but he literally keeps him “under wraps”, locked away in the basement.

level 5

wow. like imagine being this guy.

level 3

Black Justin Bieber? To give one of many examples. It definitely has a surrealist bent to it.

level 4

Don't forget Drake is Mexican in their universe.

level 5

I had to Google it because I temporarily forgot lol

level 3

Adding to SteveBorden's comment, Helen (the German festival episode) had the trappings of a suspenseful fantasy story. I get that there is depth and symbolism in these episodes, but it seems like a big change in character for the series, at least when compared to season 1.

level 4

Season 1 had a rapper run people over with an invisible car...

level 5
18 points · 3 months ago

And it was great.

level 5
Breaking Bad6 points · 3 months ago

Actually it was an Atlanta Hawks' player.

level 5

Also a dude in a suit teleporting around, giving people nutella sandwiches.

level 2

Nah, it's not black Black Mirror. It's Twin Peaks for rappers. The Woods episode is TP-esque.

level 2

It’s a weird show but that episode where they showed the kids in middle school was painfully real

level 2

It’s supposed to be a black Twin Peaks, which is one of the most surreal shows of all time.

level 2

The opening scene for season 2 should have been your first sign that the show was no longer going to be a “dramedy.”

Does anybody know if season two will be available on Hulu anytime soon? I just hate using the FX app and on demand because of the commercials.

level 2

Should be on Hulu when the season is done. I read that this year FX is trying to hold out on releasing it on other streaming apps to try and get people to use their app

level 3
5 points · 3 months ago

Thanks! It's understandable they would do that but the commercials really makes it difficult to keep up with the season. I'll just wait then.

level 2

The fx app has actually done limited commercials this season. It's been nice

level 3

And No commercials during Teddy Perkins (like Live TV) I was pleasantly surprised. Hopefully they keep these limited commercials for Your The Worst’s final season

I loved it. I liked it better than season 1.

level 2

I didn't care for it nearly as much as season one.

level 3

Agreed. I loved all of the episodes Tracy was in (i.e. the first half of the season and the last couple), but most of the solo character episodes didn't do much for me.

level 2

Even better than season 1.

level 1

Best show on tv

level 2

I watched the first few and it didn’t sell me. Is it more of the same or does it change?

level 3

It gets a lot wierder

level 4

That episode where Darius goes to pick up a free piano might be the wierdest tv i've ever seen and it was awesome.

level 5

darius is my favorite character

level 6

I'm all about that paper-boy, especially after the haircut episode.

level 5

Suuucch a good episode

I didn't catch it while it was on during the first season. I binged it on Hulu. I remember after Episode 3 being absolutely hooked. The rest is history. I've rewatched every episode multiple times and it's amazing how good the writing is. Put it this way: everything happens for a reason.

Star Trek: The Next Generation-4 points · 3 months ago

Doesn't change much

level 2

People are seriously sleeping on this show

level 3

There really isn't a crossover between the show's demographic and this site

level 4

What is this, a crossover episode?

level 4

Most people I know irl don't know about it, but might be a skewed demographic again

level 4

People (Donald Glover included) keep implying it's a show about black people for black people, but I sincerely think it's mostly white people who watch it.

level 5

Even if a fraction of white people watched it per capita it'd still be hard to have more black people watching it with population numbers

level 3

Wait didn't he win an Emmy for it? How is that "sleeping" lmao

level 1

My favorite series right now. Donald is a genius is all I can say.

level 1

I love this show, but it sucks I have to wait so long for season 3. I think this is why most shows get cancelled. People kinda forget about it due to the long wait in between and find another show to watch.

level 1

I love how Verizon has every episode ofbl season 2 available to watch, EXCEPT FOR THE FIRST FUCKING EPISODE.

level 2

It's like that on-demand from my cable provider as well. Starts at 202 idk why.

level 1

Y so late? $$$$

Donald probably snagged a page from Harmon's book
