College is going badly for me, if someday I end up graduating with my kid than so be it. Beautiful story 🙏

level 2

Hey, please don't get discouraged. You can always take one or two classes per semester if you're struggling. At least you're continuous with working towards your goal. I know you can do it, because a lot of people including me in college may not be very smart, but just keep going anyway. You can always look for free resources to help as well.

Please don't give up

level 3

Those kind words, even if they are from a stranger online, really do help. Thank you

Moments like this make me realize the other side of social media that can help.

level 5

Not too long ago, I was struggling with bad anxiety and addiction, but wasn't yet ready to reach out to people in my life or to any mental health care professionals. I made a throwaway account and talked to Redditors on various subs. Because of that, I was able to make it through some pretty dark times.

Im glad to hear that man, it makes so much sense for social media to help. Before we were all mostly alone with our minds to plague us with their "expert opinion".

Also, it's worth getting tested for any developmental or learning disorders. I had undiagnosed ADHD until the age of 19 because my symptoms are primarily inattentiveness (ADHD-PI) rather than hyperactivity so my parents and teachers wouldn't have suspected it.

level 5

I came here to say this! I dropped out of college years ago and was recently diagnosed as an adult with ADHD. My psychiatrist said she was sad because there are accommodations for those of us who struggle with keeping up on the course load.

College is a lot. The fact that you're there at all is amazing. It's your experience, and people are happy to help you make things work for you and your brain. Best of luck!

level 5

I feel ya! I got diagnosed with a sleeping disorder years into graduate school and really wish my parents and teachers had noticed it was weird I had trouble being tired often. Would have made college much easier to be on medication.

level 4

Stick with it . I was all about sports when I went to school and ended up going back at 36. I used to hate reading and watching anything educational. Now it is pretty much all I do on my spare time . The feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment afterwards is something that stays with you for life.

One of the smartest kids from my highschool dropped out of college. I think he never really had to work hard in highschool because he was so naturally smart but once he got to college he had to and didn’t know how. I’m not very smart but I’m doing pretty well in college, just gotta take advantage of every opportunity.

You can always take one or two classes per semester if you're struggling. ... but just keep going anyway

This is true in America.

This is not true in other places of the world. In the UK you have one shot at it, and you dont get much choice what you study beyond your "major" most of the time, after which if you dont get a note from a doctor saying you have a mental illness... they either kick you the fuck out or say "try again, but the best you can do is a 3rd." They try their hardest to make sure "keep going anyway" is the worst thing you could do.

It sometimes very much is too late to get a degree, depending on the system you are in.

level 4

Yeah I envy the flexibility of the US on that aspect. I'm trying to get back to school to because I despise my degree and it feels really unwelcoming and unconvenient for someone in my position.

because a lot of people including me in college may not be very smart, but just keep going anyway.

Don't mean to dampen the mood but this is why so many people get into unnecessary crippling student debt. School isn't for everybody. People need to go into it with a purpose.

level 4

Well yes, of course no one needs to go to college just for the sake of going. What I meant to say is that hard work matters the most. Some people may be more naturally capable of understanding concepts initially, but as long as the drive is there OP or anyone can make it in college. Right now I'm over 2 years into my computer science degree and have no student loan debt due to merit scholarships, even though I failed classes in high school. As long as people want it bad enough they can do it by putting in the extra time or taking less classes.

level 3

We need more people like you in this world. I’m trying to get back into school and this is making me want to push back into it even more.

level 4

Well if you decide you want to give it a shot, feel free to pm me and I can send you some free resources to help with homework, etc. I don't have a lot but I think it would maybe make college a little less intimidating/stressful.

I left college and it took years for me to go back. One or two classes at a time while I was working full time, and eventually, I graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelors in Mathematics. You can do it! It seems tough, but it opened so many doors for me!

Don’t give up. I’m back in school after leaving an abusive relationship. Almost 35 years old, Mom of 3... I’m not giving up and neither should you. If you need time for yourself, take it. But never give up on finishing. You got this.

level 3

Best of luck to you--although your perseverance will work for you even better than luck. I've had students like you and always admired them.

level 2

It took me 8 years to get a 4 year degree, between changing schools, changing majors and a divorce. I went on to get a master's after that. All worth it. You can do it. Have faith in yourself! 🤗

level 3

A degree that takes 8 years or 4 years is still the same degree. It doesn't matter what your pace it's still an accomplishment and getting a master's is another great thing added on

Don't worry. One can overcome a lack of knowledge with hard work. Especially in college. Most people fail because they cannot handle the temptations. Keep grinding man!

level 5

Thank you I really do appreciate it

level 5

Yep. A lack of effort is the issue with almost everything.

Reminds me of when I was in 9th grade. We combined a few gym classes and had a running unit. First, we ran like half a mile, then three fourths, then a full mile. I finished first in the mile and a few of my friends were second, third, etc. Then we all of a sudden were put on teams, based on our finishes. Being first, I had the worst team and it wasn't close. I was put on a team with all the kids that walked. It wasn't some snake order thing, it was like "Oh, you got first? You get the 100th through 120th place kids on your team."

My friends decided they'd trash talk me as I had no chance at winning this time. It was oddly brutal, too.

So I ran as hard as I could, eeeeeeeasily beating everyone by half a minute. Immediately turned around, ran back HARD to the group of walker kids, found my teammates and gave them a pep talk. "If we all just jog a couple hundred yards, we'll pass this huge group of people not trying and easily win!"

It worked. Got the group of teammates to jog a couple hundred yards to the finish line and our team won.

Moral of the story: you don't have to win. You don't have to get first place. But if you try a little bit, you'll pass by the hordes of people not trying at all and come out looking pretty good :)

level 2

Keep going, don’t stop. There are organizations that will help you get scholarships and student loans to finish your degree. If you want help finding one near you, please let me know. A few student loans to pay back later are worth it to finish with a good degree.

I failed out of college three times, from three separate schools. I had ultimately accepted that graduating from college wasn't in the cards for me. That was, until I found my own purpose for going to college, rather than the motives that had been influenced upon me. I'll be graduating from DePaul University next June.

Don't let your failures, whether they be academic or social, discourage you from reaching your goal. Find your reason, and let that push you to the finish line. You are capable.

I hear you! In my youth, I was like a .230 hitter who got traded every year. I would be on academic probation or social probation, and then go somewhere else. Finally I settled down and got a degree at 36, and went to law school at 49. I had to be ready, and I had to be motivated, and until I was, nothing worked for me.

Ask for help, even if the issue is you being irresponsible at managing your time. Your deans and advisors have seen it all. Be honest with them and ask where you can find help. They want to see you graduate as much as you want to graduate.

And if the material is too difficult, there is no shame in switching majors. Plenty of economists in the world that started out as math or engineering majors.

level 2

I’m back in school after dropping out 8 years ago, it’s taxing and stressful but absolutely worth it. Nothing to add, just wanted to wish you luck in the years ahead. There are a lot of us getting our education on the “better late than never” track! Keep up the good work, even if it doesn’t feel so good in the moment.

"The moment is a long time coming for Karen Hunter, 53, who will be getting her degree in sociology from Norfolk State University today. The mother of two dropped out of school during her senior year more than 30 years ago after she had become a mom.

Karen Hunter only had 13 credits to go.

"I dropped out because I knew I had to take care of my daughter [Shonda Godfrey] and at the time I couldn't do a lot of multitasking with working and going to school," she told ABC News. "I was overwhelmed. I felt like I was a quitter because I had come that far."

It also would've meant a lot to Karen Hunter's mother, Harriet Godfrey, who wasn't able to get an education growing up. In fact, the Danville, Virginia, grandmother cannot read or write.

"But she made sure all of her kids went to school," said Latrice Hunter, 22, who is scheduled to graduate from the College of William and Mary on a full basketball scholarship with a degree in kinesiology on May 13, seven days after her mother."

Kudos to her for starting up again.

level 2

TIL about kinesiology and that one can get a degree in it.

Kinesiology is the scientific study of human or non-human body movement. Kinesiology addresses physiological, biomechanical, and psychological dynamic principles and mechanisms of movement.

These are really comforting for me to see. When I first started college years ago I simply wasn't mature enough. I never acquired good study habits growing up because I had never needed them before, and since I was more of a reserved kid, I really dove into my social life once I moved into a dorm, to the detriment of my grades. Now I have a second chance to do things right. I have to go part-time now due to other commitments, but it will get done. Slowly but surely lol.

There's a reason Smith's party died in the winter. It wasn't starvation - it was their only way to avoid having to live through another tidewater summer.
