Last July a stray kitten came into my office, looked at me like "you are my human", so I adopted her. Today, this happened. Guess now I'm an owner of another good girl.

I know. We'll just show him pictures.

Hey OP, this is what a dog looks like while this is what a cat looks like.

And this is what it looks like when God gets drunk, forgets what animal He was making and instead of checking His notes just says fuck it I'll just keep going I guess.

level 6

Okay, is that last one actually a cat or a dog?

Cat. Dogs have round pupils, cats have slitted.

Atchoum! He's a Persian kitty in Quebec, who has the genetic condition hypertrichosis, coined Werewolf Syndrome. The hair in his coat continually grows. Atchoum is the only known recorded cat with this condition.

Just let him figure it out years later. Like that Chinese man who was in the news. Raised a couple of dogs for two years before eventually finding out they were actually bears.

level 6

I thought it's 6 months? Nonetheless China is a gold mine for this kind of news as people there don't get to see animals due to the high population density. A couple years ago some cops saw a wolf on the street so they trapped the wolf and sent it to the zoo. The zoo's like what the heck are you idiots talking about? It turned out to be someone's husky on its almost weekly escape run.

director.kot is her nickname on i-gram

UPDATE: I just woke up and, wow, I didn't expect it to become that popular. Thank you all for your kind words. Seems a purrfect title is a key to success!

One thing I want to clarify: the doggo was found in a non-living area. I didn't bring it from the street, I came to the office an she was there, dirty and hiding under the cars (just like a cat). She has no marks, also, home pets usually have collars. Her pictures were posted in local german shepherd communities before reddit. There are very few people around here, but I will attach her picture on nearby bus-stops today. Also, I don't declare an ownership, as someone said, I just couldn't stand a poor guy looking for help and food. Unfortunately, I can only keep her around here, so if someone nearby Saint-Petersburg, Russia is willing to have a new family member, PM me. The timespan between both pictures is like 2 hours. A few more pics for you: https://imgur.com/a/mgRrMjQ

level 2

Can confirm am a proud owner of a cockatiel that flew into my house and a dog that wandered in, laid down, and refused to leave. Maybe I should close my door more often

(Btw the dog was chipped and when I called the owner she told me she didn't want him anymore and I could either keep him or take him to the shelter)

When I adopted my little guy, I promised him he'd have a loving home for as long as I'm alive. I stand by that. He was really sick and I thought he was going to die. Thankfully he didn't, and it's coming up on 4 years together.

level 8
50 points · 1 month ago · edited 1 month ago

Hey! I'm coming up to four years with my little one too. We got him when he was 4 months. Didn't acknowledge anyone until I walked by, then he got up, plopped his butt within scratching reach and claimed me. I swore that day I'd die before I left him.

He was a very hard to train puppy (ignoring the fact he developed Kennel Cough soon after we brought him home and a sensitive stomach). I don't think many would've had the patience with that and his high energy (JRT mix) so I think we saved him. I know he saved me by just being in my life.

Butt scratches are still his favourite too.

level 8

When my little guy wants pets, he'll sometimes nudge his head under my hand so I'll get the point. If I'm reclined in the recliner he'll jump up there and try to put his butt in my face. Lol. Sometimes he'll just lay down with his stomach on mine, facing me. Then crawl forward to give me kisses or a nice face scratch. Lol. Usually kisses.

Tell me about it. I hate people like that.

Hell when I adopted my cat as a kitten I found out when he turned 2 that I was allergic to him. And he can be a royal pain in the butt and get bite and despite most of my doctors telling me to get rid of him I kept him. I made a promise that I was never going to give him up. I just take a ton of Benadryl and give him a bath every so often.

He is 8 now.

I suddenly lost my dog 8 years ago. It was horribly painful at the time. I went into an unexpected tailspin. It's hard to even think about those days.

I still miss her a lot and find myself laughing and smiling at sporadic memories of her. Sometimes, hearing stories of loss send me back to that time.

My friend, it'll get better. There is no rushing to the imaginary grief finish line. I'm so sorry you lost your buddy. Fondly remember, grieve, beat the ground and laugh. You lost your dear friend and family member.

This happened to me one time! This sweet mutt with rabies tags wandered into our lawn and I called the vet that administered and they have me the people's address and phone number (which they probably weren't supposed to do) but I put notes on their door and called them for a week. Finally they answered their phone and at first pretended to not know what dog I was talking about but then she said she'd "forgotten" about him (let the record show that the dog was very clean and well fed when I found him and hadn't been wandering the neighborhood for more than a few hours) and told me she was pregnant and wasn't able to take care of the dog and a fetus and if I wanted him I could have him. I immediately felt sorry for that future baby. But I found a new home for little mutt because our dog didn't like other dogs. People can be so shitty.

level 3

I am going to hope that my cockatiel who got out several years ago and got lost coming home, found you.

When I was in college I wanted a dog and had looked at a few at the local humane society and had seen a couple I liked but wasn't sure. About a week later a friend of mine who knew I was looking told me that her brother's dog had just brought home a puppy in tow. No tags, matted hair, full of worms. Vet told me he was probably just a few months old.

Ten years later, we're still going strong. Your post has never been more right.

level 3
65 points · 1 month ago

Similar situation! I was going into my senior year of college and got puppy fever. I was looking online for shelters and I was only interested in border collie mixes having had two family border collies. I had no actual plan adopting one because the timing was bad- I lived in a loft on a college campus in a city...but I couldn’t help but look. My friend who lived 3 hours away in a smaller town turned 21 and on the way to her party, I looked over at the grassy median on the highway and saw a beagle and two puppies about 4 weeks old. The beagle ran away from us (still haunts me to this day) but we took the puppies. 9 years later she is still my best friend. It was fate.

Feels. We had a lab for 16 years. About 3 years ago we realized it was time to put her down. The bright part- my sister is a vet and was able to bring home the shots. We were in her favorite spot, the back deck, with me holding her in my lap with her favorite toy in her mouth while my sister administered the 2 shots. Then me and my dad got shovels and dug her a grave under the tree she used to always lay under for shade. My parents other dog, a pit, never chilled under the tree, seemed to like the sun instead. For the next 6 months, he laid daily on the mound of fresh earth under the tree.

I was alone at the gym near midnight in February of last year. At the time, I went to this tiny, hole-in-the-wall gym, so I could see the glass front door from basically anywhere in the gym.

I happened to be looking over there when I noticed some movement outside. I assumed it was a cat, as they weren't uncommon to see around there, but I kept looking and out of the shadows, an orange puppy runs up to the door. As I walked to the gym, he started scratching at it, like he was excited to meet this random-ass human.

I went outside just with the idea of petting him, thinking he was a nearby neighbor's pup, but once I got out there, I realized he was emaciated, so I took him home. A year and a half later, he's currently lying down on my bed.

(I did have him scanned for a chip and searched for lost dog reports, but came up null. He had a cheap collar with his name and his breed, Boxador, written on it, so our vet said that he probably escaped a breeder.)

Lonely guy, here to say:

"I know how sometimes looking for someone can feel soulcrushing. I've looked myself in the mirror and said 'well, I don't look bad... What's wrong with me!? Why am I such a fucking loser!? Why am I just an awkward waste of space at parties and bars!?'. And sometimes I feel like I have nothing to offer. But it's not that you or I are worthless... It's just that we're a strange puzzle piece. Let me explain. I think people are like puzzle pieces. Some click together instantly. Some seem to fit but are just wrong. Some don't seem to match with anything, frustratingly so. Until something fits. I exercise, I'm studying for my degree, I'm kinda working on my people skills (kinda)... Maybe I won't find that special someone at a bar, or in tinder, or among the 10 online dating profiles that exist in a 20 mile radius around my home (I live in Guatemala)... But I really have no choice but to keep chipping at that rock... I gotta keep at it. For my sanity's sake. I can't live with myself if I haven't tried what I reasonably could do.

Best of luck. And hey... Be well. Treat yourself to something today. I'm cheering for you :)... PS: pm nudes. nah, jk "

Edit: autocorrect error "Maybe I won't fins that special someone at a bar"

level 4

And to add to that, 99% of the time you run into that person when you least expect it. Usually happens out of nowhere without reason and seemingly like life is purposely fucking with you. So just know that's it's coming and keep moving forward.

This. OP u/Kir1ll and anyone else who finds a pet, don't assume they're strays, look for an owner first! Otherwise you could be stealing a loved lost pet. I've found the owner of animals who looked in a bad condition before, they weren't strays, they'd gotten lost.

level 4

My friend’s doggo was stolen out of his backyard and later “found” by a family who meant to keep her until a week or so later the mom took the dog to a petsmart type store and the staff found that she was chipped.

level 5

I knew a family who got their dog kidnapped, an anonymous caller looked for $500. Just as they were arranging the transaction, someone they knew spotted the dog, they went to pick him up and the people in the house just claimed ignorance, said he wandered in

Yes! I am currently looking for my cat (he's been gone for a week...) and honestly life would be a lot easier if people just called animal services rather than taking in other people's animals.

Sorry to hear that, I hope you find him safe soon, I know how stressful looking for a lost animal is. I can only imagine those who praise people for taking animals without checking haven't experienced that and haven't even thought about what it's like.

I'm sorry. We had a stray cat that wandered up to our porch one day, we took care of her for about two years but one day she just stopped showing up. She rarely left our yard and was always within hearing range so I can't imagine she got hit by a car or anything. She was so friendly though I'm afraid someone took her in or tried to rehome her.

Or at least calling a nearby vet to schedule a chip scan... IIRC most places this is a free/cheap service. If there's no chip, e-mail all the nearby vets a picture... Chances are it's one of their patients and they may recognize them.

Pleasepleaseplease check if she is chipped. A family might be very worried, right now. The way she is holding her paw up in the first pic may suggest some training.

Good on you, OP, for scooping her up and helping the kitten last year (that cat of yours takes some great pics, btw) but do check if this puppy already has a home?

That girl deserved a separate thread, which is yet to come!

Way to show your kitty girl the respect she deserves! I look forward to seeing the post about her!

Also you're a really wonderful person to adopt critters in need.

This 100%. My dog has a bad habit of exploring too far from home when she gets out and not finding her way back. Her chip has brought her back to us twice already.

The amount of random redditors who post similar stories like OPs (omg free pet!) makes me really worry if a pet I owned ever happened to get lost. Just because a pup is running through the streets does not necessarily mean theyre abandoned or strays. Always do due diligence first!!

Surprised this comment isnt higher.

Yep a few years back i found a husky running around a gas station in a pretty urban area. He was filthy dirty completely caked in mud....and looked scared as anything.

It’s fur was so wet and muddy he looked super skinny too.

I posted on FB and everybody said he was “mine now” and he deserved a better home than he had. Lots of pple asking to take him

But I was fairly sure he was someone’s dog. I went to a local shelter and had him scanned...no chip. I called around and left reports with local police and shelters.

Got him all cleaned up. Once he fluffed back up he looked like a perfectly healthy dog. Next day the shelter called me saying somebody was looking for a dog that met the description I gave. He provided proof,

He came later that day to pick him up. Was just a normal guy who explained the husky dug under his back yard fence and got out. Wasn’t the first time...huskies are known escape artists. Took him home and everybody was happy.

But plenty of friends of mine would have just taken him without bothering checking first.

It’s a cute German Shepherd puppy. Those things aren’t cheap. I’d be really surprised if it was a stray.

Seconding this. That looks like a German Shepherd, and those don't usually end up as puppy strays.

Obviously you're an awesome human with a big heart. But make sure you at least try to find her owner first. She may have gotten lost and they are still looking for her.

Ahhhh she looks like a German Shepherd mix of some kind. It's crazy that a free pupper just walked into your life! Up here (new england) the shelters run out of puppies within hours. You can barely adopt one in time.

I'm in Eastern Europe and there are beautiful stray dogs all over the city.

I am a firm believer in animals choosing us!

My boyfriend was working in East Texas and a stray dog came up to the job site. The crew fed him and he hung out with them for a few weeks until the job was finished. My bf went back a couple weeks later and the dog was still hanging out there, skin and bones so he took him into his truck and gave him a forever home.

About a year ago we were in that same spot checking on the same job and I heard a cat meow. We walked toward the sound and saw a small kitten stuck in a log, so I jumped over the creek and took her home.

Now they both are happy and healthy and love to run around the land with us! They both go wherever we do and I couldn’t imagine our lives without them.

Congrats on your new pup, hope she gets along with the cat :)
