Customer put Diesel in tank

Worked at Toyota for a few years. This common and I found out why. They think that the green handled fuel pump must be the right one for their eco friendly green car. No joke, had a customer give this to me as her reason.

Oh. my. God. How do they deal with the fact the nozzle is so much bigger and won't fit?

They just push it against the hole and hold it open. It didn't alarm the customer at all that it didn't fit. I have no idea how someone who can afford a Prius can be stupid enough to do this.

Never underestimate the power of stupid people to ignore signs of impending failure, such as rattle and banging sound from under the hood of their car or that burning smell that gets worse when they stop.

No joke, but we had a Tesla model S in the shop for state inspection. Asked the owner if he knew where the vin was stamped in and he replied it's a Tesla it probably doenst need one,with a straight face.

Are they not stamped on the drivers side of the dash where every other car I've ever seen is stamped?

Knowing Tesla I bet you have to pull the vin up on the big ass iPad on the dash.

Well wtf. I figured there was a regulation on where vin plates had to be seeing as how every other car made in the past 40 years has had a vin plate in the same place. Huh.

Worked at Nissan and had a number of customers want to get oil changes and didn't believe that there was really not a engine that needed the oil changed. I would say it's a electric motor. There is no oil in it. "Well that just doesn't seem right."

That's funny because the utter lack of oil, coolant, transmission fluid(?), ignition system, emission systems, etc is why I want an electric car when there are a reasonable number of charging stations. It seems like they should last forever with some battery changes.

I was under the impression that the cooling system was one of the most important components in an EV. As I understand it, my Volt has 3 thermal control systems. One for the cabin, one for the ICE, and one for the electric components. It keeps the battery within an optimal operating range; without which, the battery could experience damaging extremes. Though, I'm no expert, and I may misunderstand.

They are simpler, though. Less moving parts to wear out, but AFAIK cooling is just as important as it ever was.

Transmission oil :). But electric cars still need to change their brake fluids every 2 years or so and they still need coolant (at least Tesla does)

They have coolant and oil in the drive unit. They have to keep the batteries cool. The oil is changed after first year then not for 10 years.

The dealer has sent me multiple notices to bring my Leaf in for an oil change.

You totally should schedule that appointment, just to see their reaction. Have a printed copy of the dealer e-mail handy to show them.

Funny because Nissan dealer would send me a postcard every 3mos reminding me with a coupon that I needed to change the oil on my Nissan LEAF... they even write the model on the card.

Wait what does a burning smell that gets worse when you stop typically mean?

Something burning in the engine compartment, more smoke reaches your nose when stationary. Mine is a really slow oil leak onto the exhaust :(

First of all yes I'm a dingus, and also its a turbo subie so i have to deal with the ring of fire! My oil cooler leaks onto the exhaust :(

The only ring of fire I have to deal with is when I eat too much taco bell tbh.

There was this one time I thought I smelled that, but it turned out I was just braking really hard and I was cooking my brake pads.

I drive stick too, but I had to speed up ALOT and shift lanes really fast because some idiot doing around 70 in a 40 zone was coming up behind me in my lane and he wasn't moving to pass me. I luckily still made my turn but I detected a strange burning smell and at first I thought that the hard acceleration revealed an oil leak, but then it went away really fast and I analyzed the smell a bit more and I was like "... Waaaaaiiiiit a second, that's my brakes"

It's because money doesn't correlate to intelligence.

To a lot of people, the Prius is a cheap car now that they come secondhand from Craigslist.

I'd think that there's a lot of overlap between people who buy a Prius and people who are mind-numbingly stupid.

Nooooo, it's just people that may know a lot about one particular field, but not much about other fields. To make up an example, a marine biologist with a Ph.D in her field might be looked upon as the best marine biologist in the field, and a trusted expert to consult with. Should she also know the full chemical equation for charging the Lithium-Phosphate battery in her iPhone too?

Although she could be the smartest marine biologist ever, does the fact that she can't also write the LiPo charging equation mean she is, in your words, "mind-numbingly stupid" ?

There is a huge difference between not being able to write the LiPo charging equation, and not being able to function in your daily life. Nice try though.

The nozzles are usually only larger at truck stops, not regular gas stations.

In the UK, all diesel nozzles are bigger than the petrol nozzle. I had a 2007 Ford diesel car with a misfuel prevention device - it had a number of metal tabs surrounding the filler hole. Immediately below the tabs, there's a flap blocking the hole. So, if you tried to put a petrol nozzle in, the flap would refuse to open even under force. The diesel nozzle pushes against the metal tabs then the flap opens so the nozzle goes in. I never had a failed flap opening in the 50,000 miles, the nozzle has to fit exactly to move the tabs. Here's a picture of the system, you can see the metal tabs, all of them has to be depressed to open the blocking flap, which is impossible with the smaller petrol nozzle.

That's not necessarily 100%. I stopped a lady just a few weeks ago trying to cram a diesel nozzle in her car. This was at a local Kroger gas station you couldn't fit a larger truck into.

Around here (Ottawa), generally only diesel pumps at truck stops and a couple of select other stations have high flow pumps for diesel. Most of the regular diesel pumps at fuel stations have the same size nozzle (or close enough to make it hard to tell apart) for both gasoline and diesel fuel.

I’m from your neck of the woods and all the diesel pumps I ever encountered were big enough that they wouldn’t go in a gas tank on a car or truck. Not as big as high flow but big enough to not fit all the way in. Same as any other ones I’ve seen across NA.

It's not bigger. It's only bigger at pumps that service big trucks. Many diesel trucks (2500's to RVs and such) have to knock out the baffle in order ti accept the large nozzles.

Diesel nozzles at the gas station I usually go to are bigger than the gas nozzles and that place is definitely not made for refueling semis/big trucks. Doubt you could even get a semi with a trailer to the diesel pumps there.

I use a diesel heater so I fill up diesel jugs every week or so, they are definitely bigger than the gas nozzles at that gas station.

It might be different. Doesn't mean you need to be a dick about it.

I would be surprised if that were universally true. In California leaded gas used to use a bigger nozzle than unleaded (the restrictor was part of the smog check). My recollection is that diesel nozzles are/were larger as well.

There are 2 sizes of diesel nozzles, both are larger than gas nozzles.

lol why does it matter if it's a car or truck. The physical nozzle on the diesel pumps have a larger diameter so you can't fit a diesel nozzle in the down tube to a gas tank on a gas car/truck/boat/whatever. At least in the US it's that way.

Edit: ok so cars older than 25 years old may not have the plate that blocks the larger sized diesel nozzles. However there are no prius cars that are 25 years old :P Unless the gas stations somewhere are using normal sized nozzles for their diesel pumps which I think is incredibly stupid.

I didn't realize this. That's incredibly stupid. I figured that would fail an inspection but apparently there is no regulation for this even though it had been "standard" for 25 years.

Find this hard to believe as my 2007 diesel Ford sedan has a misfuel prevention device that a smaller gasoline nozzle can't get through, it had to be a bigger diesel nozzle to get through. I never came across a small diesel nozzle otherwise I'd never get it to fit in my car.

Sounds like Europe has better measures for misfuel prevention than the US. I've seen narrow nozzles here.

Definitely bigger. I had a diesel Ford sedan with a misfuel prevention device I described elsewhere, its impossible to put in a gasoline nozzle in, because its smaller. I never had a problem with too small diesel nozzle - the diameter had to be exact to get past the misfuel prevention. Slightly too big or slightly too small, it wouldn't fit. I never had a problem fitting a diesel nozzle in this system 50,000 miles.

Not sure if it's all BP's, but the one by my station has green handles for gas and black for diesel.

The ambulance may or may not have been filled with gas a few times.

I wonder if BP, being British Petroleum, uses the British colour codes: Green = Gas and Black = Diesel?

Used to be British Petroleum. Now stands for Beyond Petroleum, though your could still be right. It's green for petrol, black for diesel here is Australia.

Our handles are all the same colour, but the hoses are all clearly labelled on the bowser. Pretty easy. And the diesel pump has a separate flap you have to lift out of the way that says "Warning: Diesel"

Just returned from Ireland, the rental counter lady made sure to stress this to us. Many many pumps here use green for diesel, it was the opposite there. I was REALLY careful not to mess that one up!

Yeah, all UK stations always use green for petrol and black for diesel. Leaded petrol uses red handles, but they no longer exist.

Yeah LPG is blue, but I'd be very surprised if you manage to fit a LPG nozzle in a petrol/diesel socket ;-)

Just as well, they tend to have their own pumps, only once I saw a LPG nozzle alongside the petrol and diesel nozzles.

That's exactly why I thought it happened! I figured "green" car - "green" handle.

Things like this amaze me that we, as a species, have made it this far....

It certainly wasn't a, "Powerful rise to modernity". More like a "Bumbling in the dark and crashing into advancements; oftentimes in a violent manner...".

In Europe green is unleaded and black is diesel.

In the UK diesel pump is black, petrol is green

In most places green means diesel, I have had quite a few diesel customers come in who put gas in their trucks because at the rest area where I am, all gas nozzles are green, and the diesel nozzle is yellow or black.

A while other gas stations in the same town have black nozzles for gas and green nozzles for diesel.

So when people pull up to the pump, and they see the green handle, that's the pump that they pull up to without reading what's being dispensed.

To top it off, some cars have green gas caps

Yellow makes the most sense for diesel.

Diesel handles are both green and yellow in RI. One station has both.. I went inside to ask which is what and the register man didn't know..

I hate that the diesel pumps are cold coded differently between the USA and Canada. They're yellow in Canada. I always needed to be extra diligent when filling our TDI.

Tbf, at least they're trying... It could be a lot worse. My favorite response is "diesel is just a different grade of gas, idiot, it has to be something else".

On the flip side the handles on the gasoline pumps at the BP near my house are all green. They don't have diesel at all. Was confused as hell the first time I pulled up there in my truck.

Green for diesel? That's confusing! In the U.K., green is for petroleum, black is for diesel.

Then again, the pumps are labeled "petrol" and "diesel" also.

Also, whilst the diesel nozzle is significantly larger in diameter than the petrol nozzle, some people try to fill diesel into a petrol car.

But petrol into a diesel car is more frequent here.

Apparently, one study espoused by a television programme, (Fifth gear?) claimed that police officers were more likely to mis-fuel than the general public.

Could that be because the general public drives one car most of the time, but officers switch between personal and police cruisers? If their car uses a different fuel from the cruiser, I can certainly see how they could mix up if not paying attention.

Yeah, It would seem likely that drivers a fleet of vehicles with differing fuel requirements would lead to such problems.

I’ve heard about that happening on the district I work on. Several dodge and ford pickups in gas and diesel models. Identical if you’re not familiar with trucks, (looking at you office folks who go out once a month).

I'm glad in Canada diesel is a yellow pump.

How common is common? I've seen it a few times in 10 years, never on a Prius though.

I was traveling over the summer and after driving for 7 hours stopped for gas at a place in east Tennessee. The fuckers had the regular gas handle covered in green and the diesel handle in black. I was sleepy and it took me three or four separate times to confirm I was using the right nozzle and that the correct button was pushed for gas.

We used to have red for leaded fuel of various ratings (though I mostly remember 4*) probably because it made everyone super angry and violent.

It is, but you would be surprised at the extreme effort some people put in to be complete morons. They try really hard. When I was driving a tow truck, I towed a Range Rover that the owner had put diesel in. She told me that the nozzle wouldn't go all the way into the neck (duh), so she held on to it the whole time and pumped really slowly so it wouldn't splash back.

This reminds me of my scooter. They put a plastic stopper about 3" down the tank so you can put the nozzle in (barely) but since it takes so much space there it'll take you quite a while to fill the tank, or else the pump will cut the flow all time or it'll splash everywhere. It's the dumbest thing but I think it's there to make filling from a gas can easier. Makes sense for the intended market.

Some are, generally the ones at truck stops or tall bays. Others, such as those right next to the standard gas pumps are sometimes the same size as gas nozzles.

We get it, your car vapes.

If it were coolant instead of diesel, it would also smell like gross candy.

Thanks! I didn't know coolant was flammable (what?? really?). All attempts to pinpoint the leak have failed -- I suspect it's the common coolant bypass valve failure on my car. However, it must be like one drop every drive because the level barely ever goes down.

I'll definitely get it fixed as soon as I can -- I'm trying to get the car back into 100% perfect condition (it's at about 86% right now).

As an ex - diesel owner, this one is stupid, because some brands of diesel use a green handle...others use a black one. Worse, some diesel pumps have a gas-unleaded nozzle not the slightly bigger diesel car nozzle. I once had a problem where I couldn't find a diesel station with car nozzles, and finally, in the middle of some town in Pennsylvania, on empty, finally found one, but...the nozzle was for gas, and the TDi "anti-mis-fuel" trapdoor properly would not let it seat. Took a long time to get a few gallons in. I later bought the converter from the big-rig nozzles to the car size and had the anti mis fuel device removed.....but the lack of a standard color for a diesel handle makes no sense.......

I've often thought it would be cool to swap a pickup truck diesel engine into a prius, turn the fuel way up, and just go around rolling coal and racing people lol. Would require lots of serious modification, but would probably be worth it to see the reactions

Before I saw the location tag I was gonna ask if this was in Oregon. They just recently changed laws so that you could pump you own gas (they used to require an employee to pump your gas). Oregon, being full of... Well... those kind of people, has had somewhat of a problem with people who've never known better putting diesel in their gasoline cars because they think that "the gas in the green pump will be better for the environment, that must be why it's green". The stupidity of some people never ceases to amaze me.

Ha! Prius burns oil. But seriously, at around 100k, my Prius started to burn a quart of oil every 1,500 miles. I wonder where all that oil goes, kind of defeat the point of a green engine. Went online and found that I was definitely not alone on this issue.

Some diesel nozzles are the same size as gas nozzles. Particularly low flow diesel pumps which don't service trucks.

Like I said to a previous commenter, Google will give you any answer that supports your opinion. I've been in the auto industry for 25yr, I've taken apart, put together, been trained on, and worked on many vehicles of all kinds. The hybrids have more plastics in them, plain and simple. Also, there is a much different process to the handling and recycling of lithium batteries. Crack a regular battery, get some battery acid on you and ruin a good work shirt, crack a lithium battery, evacuate a building and call a hazmat team. The process of breaking down hybrid batteries releases not only lithium but also cobalt among about a dozen other possible contaminants and precious metals known to pollute soil and water. They're done in vastly different environments with vastly different and more costly processes (smelting etc.). Miniscule percentages (probably less than 25% currently) of lithium batteries are properly recycled as compared to standard car batteries (which hybrids also have btw).

Edit: most independent shops aren't even currently equipped to work on those electrical systems, pretty much only a dealer will handle those batteries and they probably only have a couple of techs even qualified due to the risk involved. Those things are no joke.

Bah, those things are terrible for the environment to begin with.

They're thirsty as fuck for the sort of performance you get. I've yet to see one achieve better than 40mpg, which for a vehicle that size would make me start to suspect an engine fire.

I'd take the diesel bomber with 6" exhaust tip at toddler-face-height instead of the EPA-managed mine in in the desert any day.

At least on that scale, and honestly, we should be getting recombinant fuels within a decade or two making the issue moot.

This was thoroughly refuted eleven years ago.

That ignored about 2/3 of the problems of hybrid/electric cars.

Nickel and Lithium mining and processing are certainly a problem, but so are Rare Earth metals and increased particulate pollution, to say nothing of increased complexity impacting everything from production to maintenance.

The environmental impact of neodymium production is massively overblown. According to material lifecycle analyses, neodymium has a global warming potential of about 17.6 kg CO2e per kg, which compares to 1.5 kg CO2e for iron. Thing is, though, you only need 1 or 2 kg of neodymium tops, which is an equivalent impact to adding 12-23 kg of iron to a car, which is still an insignificant difference in terms of its lifecycle environmental impact. Even if you measure environmental impact in terms of human toxicity, neodymium has a lower per-kilogram impact than more mundane elements like nickel and copper, as per that paper.

The practical upshot of this is that, even if you account for battery material production, hybrids are still better for the environment than normal cars. In fact, the battery hardly puts a dent into a hybrid car's environmental impact reduction.

The Argonne National Laboratory's GREET Model directly contradicts that claim. According to their lifecycle modeling, hybrids have lower lifecycle particulate pollution than normal cars (see Figure 26, Page 85).

I'm not sure if you've noticed, but the Prius is one of the most reliable cars in existence. Taxi fleets and uber drivers across the world operate the Prius in droves, and it ain't because it looks pretty.

The initial mining of the resources is not environmentally friendly.

However, because lithium batteries (which contain nickel and Lithium) can be recycled a couple dozen times, it's more environmentally friendly in the long run.

Most everyone who says they're not as environmentally friendly is referring to a dis-proven study (funded by oil companies) from 2003. If you've ever seen the youtube video about "Shipping batteries around the world!", then you've seen corporate-funded propaganda.

And that's before we get into the power they use. Sure, lots of places still use coal. But even with the absolute WORST numbers for the electric car, they still break even with gassers (as far as energy creation, be it the gasoline or the electricity), and when you factor in renewables, electric cars are much more efficient.

I am glad someone was here to say this already, just going to leave these legit studies here for anyone that wants to get the actual facts.

Unless it's the plug-in version, it's using NiMH batteries anyway. Nickel isn't a toxic or rare metal. And the batteries are still recycled, most likely when the car is finally scrapped because the batteries don't wear out like people think they will.

All the talk about petrol handles ITT makes me remember something I never understood - here in the UK we have separate hoses for the various grades of fuel like this usually 4 - premium unleaded, super unleaded, City diesel and premium diesel, but there are variations. But in the USA, there's usually one nozzle and a number of buttons you press to select the fuel grade - why?
