Hurricane Harvey has been upgraded to Category 4, sustained winds over 130mph. It's also slowed down, now moving west north west at about 8mph, so it's only gaining strength from the warm Gulf waters.

This isn't going to be pretty. At all. Everyone down there on the Gulf Coast, I'm thinking about ya. Stay safe.

EDIT: It appears to have made landfall. All of Corpus Christi is without power, and all meteorological stations in the area have ceased reporting. Godspeed to all of you.

I'm a fire captain (on duty) at the naval air station in corpus. They shut down the base completely, and moved law enforcement and fire to nas kingsville about 45 miles away. We are waiting it out tonight, not allowed to leave the building. Hopefully tomorrow morning we can head back up to corpus.

This was my fun when Sandy struck. Was forced to not respond for a day or 2.

So it's gonna be like the Purge but with wind and rain.

Maybe 130mph winds will blow bullets off course.

So from reading the comments it seems like the governor did not tell anyone to evacuate? That seems careless... How true is that?

In Texas we have no mandatory evacuation order. If your ass wants to stay in your house and drown more power to you.

I guess it strengthened really quickly and now the evacuation window has passed

Yeah, it jumped from either a tropical storm or a cat 1 to a cat 4 in about a day and a half, it got real bad real fast

It went from a tropical storm to cat 4 in less than 14 hours. When most people went to bed, it was a cat 2 IIRC. People where told if you don't want to evacuate, then mark your body with your name and SSN with a sharpie.

Specifically, that was the mayor pro tem of Rockport that said that.

In the state of Texas, the governor cannot order an evacuation. Mandatory evacuation orders come from county judges or city mayors. Both Corpus Christi Mayor Joe McComb and Nueces County Judge Loyd Neal decided to only issue voluntary evacuations. Cities and counties much farther from the center of the storm have given such orders.

I should point out that Harvey strengthened ridiculously fast.

Just spoke to an online bud in Corpus, he said they are expecting 30-50 inches plus 10ft storm surge. That's as bad as the biggest cat 5 cyclone we had a while back. Only 1 person died from that but we have a less dense population than south Texas and our politicians aren't retarded so those who needed to evacuate did.

Stay safe down there guys.

To be fair, a day ago the news was saying it was likely to re-form into a tropical storm before making landfall, then all of a sudden it jumped to category 4 and 50+ inches of rain. I've lived in south Louisiana all my life and in 30 years have never seen a storm strengthen that quickly.

That's fair, I will admit I haven't been following this storm all that closely, only really picked up on it in the past 24 hours or so.

level 2

Topical storm to Cat4+ in 36 hours. Not much time to evacuate a few million people.

Yep, I do take your point there.
