Seeing down votes, so a bit of context. Dern has a history of missing weight. Yesterday, she missed weight by 7.4# for tonight's UFC fight. That's a lot for any weight class; it's worse when you consider she fights in the 115 class. She has been heavily hyped by the UFC and then recently stated she spends time on the beach when her coaches wanted her in the gym training.

She endorses a scale on her IG 2 days before missing weight by a mile.

Irony = funny

I don't get it, please explain further.

She promoted that scale on her insta, then missed weight for UFC 224 by over 7 pounds about 2 days later.

level 2

MakEnzie's hype !!! Since Lesnar and GSP leaving the UFC, Dana White and UFC marketing dept has problems finding that iconic figure to boost the company's numbers (& $$$).

There are fighters out there who do miss weight but no one cares, and now Dern misses weight, and her name is all over the place ? Remember if she wants a title shot at Rose Namajunas, she'll have/must make weight !!!

Besides that, the only respect I have for her is the guts. She has the guts of showing up in the octadon. Besides that, she'll get her brain shaken and rocked in matter of weeks. Her ground game is absolutley outstanding, but she wont become UFC champ with this, let alone her stand up striking with winging/looping right hooks.

If Demian Maia (specialist BJJ black belt grappler) never got that coveted UFC belt, you think she can pull it ? You and me agreed on that. But why in the world those he has all that attention ???

I suspect Gab Garcia would also get that much attention ?

Ben Askren too ?

Marcelo Garcia ?

'Just to name a few.

So OP posts a bit of fun and irony, which was worth a giggle, but then yallrcunts, shows up to give what appears to be a masterclass in tremendous trolling pressure. Then it turns out that not only is he being serious but is probably wearing his pants on his head.

Not only does he step in to defend m'lady's 7.5 lbs, without realizing there is no way Mackenzie Dern will either read this thread or polish his knob (sorry to be the bearer of bad news dude), but he does it by complaining about the "unique physiological and social pressures women face" while ignoring the fact that other women in MMA (and many other sports), including her opponent (and herself in the past) make weight regularly.

The fact is, she's too chubby for her weight class and has all but admitted she'd rather hang out on the beach than train, which is fine for her, but it does make it unintentionally hilarious when she's endorsing a scale, and ridiculous outrage by a white knight on reddit only makes it twice as funny.

level 2

...there is no way Mackenzie Dern will either read this thread or polish his knob

So you're saying there's not a chance?

level 2

I hate white knights with a passion. There's so many on this sub too, haha.

Anyway, trying to defend her is a lost cause, especially with all the reasons you stated. If her opponents can make weight, she can too. If not, then that weight class is way too low for her. This girl looks like she's naturally around 140 lbs.

I usually have a knee-jerk rejection of any opinion that comes with a side order of accusing the opposition of being white knights, but this once I'm forced to agree; not only are the unique pressures women face geared towards being skinnier, but the fact is that Dern accepted two years' pay just to show up as a straw-weight and didn't deliver.

I got to it late, but can see all of his side on his history. It's amazing.

Particularly the AAA example of Nice Guy™ white knighting, where he lets slip his true belief that all women are actually filthy cheating whores:

Women are built to create humans. Men are designed to impregnate them. This has lead to sexual warfare for millions of years yielding cuckoldry, and all sorts of underhanded strategies for procreation and securing their progeny's destiny.

Poor use of a comma at the end there, bud. Should have gone for an ellipses or a period. Also, you should use real m-dashes (—) instead of two n-dashes (--).

level 4
-5 points · 3 months ago(0 children)
level 5

Oh yeah totally. That's why you always see "--" in books, newspapers, and journals. I mean it's not like computers can even type "—", right?

level 6

Yeah they can, but I'm not going to go into my character map every time I need an em dash. For the sake of brevity, and usually because my audience isn't as stupid as you I settle on two consecutive hyphens to represent it.

Dialect, and different spellings exist everywhere and no one should bat an eye at that. It would follow from that that you should take your head out of your ass and realize that people can have a different symbolic representation of the same exact thing. This is evidenced by the fact you could recognize it in the first place. Sort of like how if someone spelled the word weird, wierd you'd still know that the word is weird, albeit misspelled. This is even less of a usage case problem than that since I've done nothing more than extended two dashes to represent an em dash.

You're being obtuse, deliberately and it's not even funny. You should definitely work on your shtick.

In any event, Wikipedia disagrees with you:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dash

"When an em dash is unavailable in a particular character encoding environment—as in the ASCII character set—it has usually been approximated as a double (--) or triple (---) hyphen-minus. The two-hyphen em dash proxy is perhaps more common, being a widespread convention in the typewriting era. (It is still described for hard copy manuscript preparation in the Chicago Manual of Style as of the 16th edition, although the manual conveys that typewritten manuscript and copyediting on paper are now dated practices). The three-hyphen em dash proxy was popular with various publishers because the sequence of one, two, or three hyphens could then correspond to the hyphen, en dash, and em dash, respectively."

So much for your ENTIRE ARGUMENT AND EXAMPLES.

You're fucking stupid in short. Don't bother me again, fuck.

level 7
2 points · 3 months ago
level 8

Seriously? Someone called me out on a usage case and then I expounded on why they were wrong, but I'm the one who's a candidate for that?

The irony is palpable.

level 9

xDDDDD

level 7

Wikipedia:

"It is still described for hard copy manuscript preparation in the Chicago Manual of Style as of the 16th edition, although the manual conveys that typewritten manuscript and copyediting on paper are now dated practices"

Oh I see my mistake. I thought you were spewing garbage on Reddit using a computer, but apparently you're using a typewriter. Still, it's considered rather dated.

level 8
1 point · 3 months ago · edited 3 months ago

Concession granted. Language is a living thing, and how we use it is as well--as long as the conventions are understood then they are sound.

Also, you've made a context fallacy. I gave you the entire context and you took a snippet of it, and then are attempting to still win this argument.

This is what it looks like to be you:

"When an em dash is unavailable in a particular character encoding environment—as in the ASCII character set—it has usually been approximated as a double (--) or triple (---) hyphen-minus."

The only data I'm presenting is the one that completely corroborates my claim and offers no contradiction whatsoever. Even with the entire context it still stands. It's a convention that was spread by typewriters, but was also used by those who had developed computers like today. We all readily have access to the Unicode that comes as a legacy of Windows, but I don't recall the sequence off hand.

You've lost it, and I allowed you to double down on it by never elucidating what I knew all along. You're easy to bait, and easy to beat. Anyway, next time you try to be pedantic at least read up on it first. It will save you a lot of grief in the future.

level 9

a) Unicode as been around since 1991.

b) It's not a "legacy of Windows". It was started by Xerox and Apple. The most recent version is July of 2017.

c) Your trying to defend your ineptitude by claiming that em-dashes are "unavailable" in your "character encoding environment". They obviously aren't — this text, after all, is in that environment.

Therefore

d) You're obviously just too lazy to properly format your Reddit diatribes and your attempts to blame the system are a predictable failure.

level 10

A) Pedantic. B) Pedantic. C) Unreasonable. D) Belligerent.

No argument found. You're just painfully intolerant to loss. You haven't made a point since what you said originally. My point stands regardless of small discrepancies with a few dates or usage cases. A diatribe is not the same as a formal argument. Your point stands on my ignorance of the progenitor of unicode (thanks for that), but it's been a legacy [look up the word it corresponds to software] of the windows operating system.

It's simple. I can use --, or --- to represent the em-dash. It's patently obviously that you're just trying to get under my skin. There are better ways to do that.

Stopped by my gym for a publicity thing. She was looking thick. And when I say that I don't mean T H I C C. I mean fat. Certainly by pro fighter standards, but also my personal standards by which women's health is judged.

Reminds me of one of our fighters who missed weight 7 times in a row, but fatter.

17 points · 3 months ago

Seen her around several times in the last few months. She used to drop in at my academy as well.

At one BJJ tournament in Irvine, seen her eating a huge dessert bowl (not acai) and my girl says “oooh! That’s Mackenzie’s weakness! Sweets! Just like me!”

Ever since then, I just figured Mackenzie’s eating sweets.

She was looking really chunky at that tournament though, one would never guess she’s a fighter in contact with UFC.

level 3

I was watching that UFC vlog or something, and thinking to myself man she looks really thick. and when she said something like "oh we just landed, and we are going to the hotel and start weight cutting" I was like seriously?

Some time ago a UFC fighter made a post saying he didn't get paid the promised money for promoting the scale. He made a vid of him throwing it in the bin after that. Also the product seems like bullshit, how would a scale know how much of your weight is muscle, water, fat, etc?

level 2

By passing an electric current through and measuring the resistance. It isnt as accurate as other measures, but I isnt terrible either.

level 3

Resistance is a lot of cumulative factors though. Yes, it’s muscle %, fat %, water%, but it’s also bone density, skin permeability (calluses on feet), the inverse of blood conductivity (iron content), etc. A 5 microamp current (or whatever value it is) can’t tell the difference of what’s what. That’s too complicated of a task.

level 4

So it isnt so useful for determining absolute bf%, but it works pretty well for seeing your changes and progress.

level 5

Good cause my scale told me I have too much fat

level 1

She said she tried really hard to make weight. She came in looking thicc (as ever) and chubby. Come on girl, there's no way in hell you tried your hardest. Everything about you and your behavior leading up to the fight was lackadaisical. It's a shame because she has so much potential and I definitely am a fan, but she needs to take this shit seriously. Move up a weight class or SOMETHING
