I always appreciated Black Lightning because he was the purest, no bullshit distillation of what being a superhero means.

How did he get his powers? He was born with them, No tragic origin story in sight. Why does he do what he does? Because its the right thing to do, no obligation or curse other than just wanting to help. Does he have a secret identity? Yeah, but not to the people most closest to him, his wife and daughters who all know. Does he struggle with the balance of two worlds? Not really. His family is aware and proud of what he does, and he doesn't hide things from them.

All of that comes through in the trailer, and it made me excited for this series.

[–]marcohtxStatic 84 points85 points  (13 children)

I love it that he's not a billionaire playboy, or victim of a science experiment, or ex military. Hes a school teacher.

[–]temporal712 37 points38 points  (6 children)

That too. He isn't a special snowflake aside from his powers. He is just a dude that wants to use the gifts he has to help.

[–]NeutralGreed 30 points31 points  (5 children)

That used to be Barry Allen's backstory until Flash Rebirth :/

[–]Marty_McBadbat21 16 points17 points  (4 children)

I always bring that up when people when people complain about how heroes always have tragic backgrounds. Flash: Rebirth has been so devise to me, on one hand it's an amazing story with beautiful art and adds an intense level of backstory to one of Flash's greatest enemies. Yet on the other it alters Barry's backstory to be another basic murdered parents drives him to be a hero.

[–]7V3Nsorryimlate 21 points22 points  (3 children)

Not if you acknowledge it wasn't always that way. I haven't read Rebirth in some time, but isn't the whole story that Thawne murdered his mother? That means Barry is a hero no matter what. With or without his mom. Thawne knew a Flash that had a mother, and took that away. I never saw it as taking anything away from Barry, but adding to his relationship with Thawne.

[–]Marty_McBadbat21 12 points13 points  (2 children)

That's how I try to see it most of the time, but it's just annoying in general that hero's can't just be normal people that happen upon powers. I agree it doesn't take away from Barry as a character, he would always be a hero mother or not and powers or not, and it is an amazing addition to his greatest rogues story.

I think my real struggle comes from the Flash TV show, which I do love, and the looks we have gotten so far of the films Flash interpretation, which I am hopeful for. To non-readers, these versions of the character will be how they are perceived on a more mainstream level, and IMO neither have made me see the character that we get in the comics. I remain hopeful for the movies, but it just looks they're taking Barry farther towards being a response to Spider-Man/Peter Parker.

[–]blackestarrow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well in one of the last episodes of the show, they showed that he would have being a hero either way.

[–]noj776Batman & Robin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

ITs the same thing in the show. He was a hero BEFORE Reverse Flash killed his mom. He even just recently had his memories wiped, and even then he chose to be a hero when people needed help.

[–]JGarrickFlashGoliath 4 points5 points  (3 children)

I thought he was the principal. But not much difference really.

[–]marcohtxStatic 17 points18 points  (2 children)

I remember in the comics he was a teacher first, but this is years later, so it makes sense he would be a principal by now.

[–]WombatapultIt’s only what’s in us - the drive to be mythic - that matters. 2 points3 points  (1 child)

In the comics he ended up as the head of the US Department of Education, IIRC

[–]Leonv3x 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like how he kept going up in the educational chain of command.

[–]MRRobertsBEETLE/BOOSTER 2016 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% agree. My favorite Spider-Man stories are the ones where he's a science teacher too.

[–]potatoparadise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He does seem to have some advanced knowledge in tech though. Looks like he was working on his own suit, that appears to be more than just a way to disguise his identity. Looks like it can channel his powers or something's

[–]Ecksearoh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Actually he wasn't born with them active. He used to use a power belt before his metagene was activated. He did have a tragic origin that revolved around the deaths of his father, a specific student, and his mentor.

His wife and daughters were a retcon introduced by two different writers Judd Winick introduced Anissa (Thunder) in the Outsiders, and Geoff Johns introduced Jennifer (Lightning) to the mainstream continuity during his JSA run. (Jennifer first appeared in the alternate future Kingdom Come mini-series)

[–]UESPA_SputnikI am vengeance. I am the night. I am ... The Sisko. 157 points158 points  (33 children)

I'm looking forward to the inevitable crossover with the Arrowverse, even though the producers apparently deny that Black Lightning is in a shared universe with them (for now).

[–]Squadz 147 points148 points  (8 children)

Meanwhile he's in Barry's lab and Jitters in the trailer.

Hah, shared studios.

[–]TeldarionNightwing 74 points75 points  (7 children)

The school hall at the start is the one where Bary speed-punches Girder in season 1 as well

[–]CalluhadTitan 1 43 points44 points  (6 children)

To be fair, CW reuse sets a load in this universe. Nearly every single warehouse scene is shot in the same place, as are the dock scenes, forest scenes and alleyways.

[–]TeldarionNightwing 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Oh don't get me wrong, not complaining. They're not in he same universe so it's not confusing, and anything to keep the production cost down so they can pump it into CGI.

Edit: and competent writers

[–]zencrisisGreen Arrow 12 points13 points  (1 child)

The Queen estate in early seasons of Arrow was also the Luthor estate in Smallville. And while I haven't confirmed this, during a rewatch of Buffy, I'm pretty sure one of the fancy rooms in Dracula's castle is the same one used for the boardroom meeting in S1 of Arrow regarding the Undertaking. CW keeps their sets forever.

[–]WillowSmithsBFF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That mansion was also used in Supernatural in an episode where the brothers go to an alternate reality and are rich.

[–]BevansDesignIndigo Tribe 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Don't forget stretches of road. They have like 3 of them, and one of them has some sort of raised rail line on one side.

[–]CalluhadTitan 1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That one is my second favourite but I'm particularly fond of the stretch of road where they always say goodbye to members of Team Arrow. And where conveniently was located.

[–]mr_duong567Grayson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny how they used "logistics" of where they film this show (Atlanta vs Ontario) as an excuse to not be apart of Arrowverse, yet they share the same sets.

If anything, this is apart Arrowverse but they wanted to call it a standalone show to attract non comic viewers...who wouldn't pay attention to press releases anyways.

[–]LibraryDrone 49 points50 points  (6 children)

Dude, imagine Black Lightning and Vibe fighting back to back.

[–]super_slayer 34 points35 points  (5 children)

Dude, imagine the enhancements that Vibe can make to the suit...

[–]AdamBombTVRiddle Me This... 62 points63 points  (4 children)

Dude, imagine Black Lightning and Joe West just talking Dad shit together.

[–]CashWhoTim Drake 33 points34 points  (1 child)

Dude, imagine a time when Static shows up and Black Lightning mentors him and he and Jay talk about mentoring the younger heroes.

[–]Cire101 9 points10 points  (0 children)

inb4 Static is a Titan

[–]TheGreatRao 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now THIS I want to see... We always see sons bury their fathers. We don't often see fathers caring for their kids.

[–]baronvoncarsonBatwoman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually wouldn't mind this. It'd be interesting to see older heroes talking parenting.

[–]evilbob2200Excuse me... 23 points24 points  (1 child)

they cant even say that when the entire dc multiverse is a shared multi/omniverse

[–]ShadowPhoenix22Nightwing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Flash already established that, so Supergirl is another Earth, same could be true of Black Lightning.

Alright, good point. But with Supergirl, they never ruled out the crossover, they only said there were no plans.

They've been very adamant about BL not existing within the larger CWverse. Either way, I just hope the show is good.

[–]daffydunkHeir to the Cowl 14 points15 points  (2 children)

If BL ever starts struggling with ratings, you can bet your ass that Barry or Kara will stop by to say hello.

      [–]ShadowPhoenix22Nightwing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Poor Oliver and Legends - no need for them!

      [–]CliffordMoreauWonder Woman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not denying, but it definitely looks good

      [–]maneill91Ra's Al Cool: The Demon's Bed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to mention it's going to be done by the same writers & producers. I think they just don't want to have him involved in the crossover, but will make his earth part of the universe in due time.

      [–]Jay_R_KayBatfleck 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I believe that about as much as I believed they had no plans to cross Supergirl over with the rest.

I just hope that they let BL establish it's own identity as a show, with maybe little hints of the larger universe in the background, before he gets involved in them.

      [–]alchemeron 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Honestly, they should've just set it in Supergirl's universe.

      [–]ShadowPhoenix22Nightwing 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Nothing to confirm it's not in Earth 38 for Supergirl.

      [–]alchemeron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My recollection is that early word was that it was in a third separate universe, and I've seen nothing to indicate otherwise... but it could certainly be a pleasant surprise if a reference was thrown in at the end of the pilot.

      [–]TheAngryBlackGuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cinematic universes have spoiled us, but I still want what I want

      [–]CoobreedanSuperman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm hoping they're saying it's separate just to explain why he hasn't been around or mentioned in the other shows; then, after a 4-part Crisis crossover, the Supergirl and Black Lighting universes merge with the main Arrowverse.

      [–]shadoxalon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is actually one of my favorite things to do with long-running interconnected series from the same studio! The show Super Sentai (Power Rangers) in Japan alternates which sets they use each year, so you constantly see the same locations being anything from a town square to a ninja lair. It's great fun.

      [–]sammylaco 69 points70 points  (1 child)

Looks great. Very excited to finally have a lead in one of these shows who has their shit together and isn't brand new to heroics. As always, the shit looked better in motion than the first promo image. Can't wait.

      [–]ShadowPhoenix22Nightwing 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I hope he acts like that. Whether it's Oliver, Barry, Kara, or the Legends, they're all adults, with some more experienced at this stuff than others.

Shouldn't need to keep learning and figuring stuff out.

      Hope BL manages well.

      [–]marcohtxStatic 81 points82 points  (3 children)

Its like Luke Cage meets The Incredibles. I am definitely impressed by this. The tone of the show is good. The combat looked good. The new suit will take some time to get used to, but I love all of the cool stuff he can do. The daughters will probably have the more CW esque storylines, but having a show about a superhero who has to balance being a father has never really been done, so its a fresh change.

      [–]Particle_Man_Prime 13 points14 points  (1 child)

No doubt Netflix marvel inspired this, I'm okay with the costume, I miss superheroes looking like superheroes.

      [–]marcohtxStatic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah I love a full on costume. They could have easily just gave him a leather jacket and a mask. I'm glad they made the effort.

      [–]robm0n3y 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't be surprised if the reviews mention Luke Cage a lot.

      [–]ezreading 29 points30 points  (16 children)

I was hoping Black Lightning would be the first new series in an expanded Supergirl Earth.

I was also hoping he'd have black lightning.

      Still looks good through.

      [–]obsidianraindropAmethyst 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Black lightning would be hard to see at night when they're filming.

Plus, the arrowverse already has lightning effects down so why not use the one they have and make them better instead of creating something from the ground up.

      [–]Novice89Aquaman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oooo that would be good. I don't like that Supergirl is all on her own over there.

      [–]Jay_R_KayBatfleck 5 points6 points  (11 children)

Maybe it's because I haven't read a lot of him, but what about this wasn't Black Lightning? It has a lot of what I remember seeing from him -- him being a teacher, his family and so on...

      [–]HALF_ORCTin 24 points25 points  (0 children)

i think they meant literal black lightning

      [–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (3 children)

I think he means that he wants his lightning to be the color black.

[–]AdamBombTVRiddle Me This... 9 points10 points  (2 children)

Wouldn't that be incredibly hard to film?

[–]MrChanggFastest Man Alive 9 points10 points  (1 child)

It'd be pretty ugly too. Lightning isn't black, man.

      [–]TeldarionNightwing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So lightning ban only be white, huh?! Racist!

      [–]ezreading 8 points9 points  (5 children)

I wanted his lightning to be colored black.

The show looks perfect, to me.

      [–]marcohtxStatic 11 points12 points  (4 children)

He never actually had black lightning. He goes by that name, because in the 70's many of the black superheroes had black in the name.

      [–]BrowncoatOfArmsSuperman 9 points10 points  (2 children)

In Young Justice he had black lightning.

      [–]gsdevSuperman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I know it's not where the name came from, but he has been depicted with black electricity:

      [–]Crackerpool 0 points1 point  (1 child)

      Sniff could have been static...

      [–]Leonv3x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sure they can do some sort of segue with Static (I really hope so)

      [–]Jay_R_KayBatfleck 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I love how this feels different from the other DCCW-verse shows, where there's more of a grounded, gritty feel, sort of like the first two seasons of Arrow (which I think is still the best this universe of shows has ever been).

I've been kind of lax/not caring so much for these shows in the past year, but this one I'll definitely give a shot when it comes out.

      [–]Js7868Ra's Al Cool 21 points22 points  (9 children)

It feels like a completely different tone from the other Arrowverse shows. I guess that's what you get when the main character is a father of two and an older hero.

Awesome that we have like 8 DC shows on air and 4 (eventually 5) of them are connected to each other. Plus Titans and Young Justice are next year.

      [–]Novice89Aquaman 3 points4 points  (8 children)

      8?

Arrow, Flash, Supergirl, Legends, what else am I missing?!

      Omg Young Justice hmmmmmmmmm

      [–]Js7868Ra's Al Cool 7 points8 points  (7 children)

Arrow, Flash, Supergirl, Legends, Gotham, Lucifer, IZombie, and Black Lightning makes 8. Plus Titans, Young Justice and Krypton next year.

      [–]Novice89Aquaman 2 points3 points  (6 children)

I forgot about gotham. Lucifer any good? Izombie doesn't seem like my thing and I honestly didn't even realize it was a dc property.

      [–]Js7868Ra's Al Cool 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Lucifer is basically just a cop show, but every once in a while they sprinkle in some bits from the comics. It's the characters and their interactions that make the show for me.

I actually haven't watched Izombie yet, but I've heard a lot of good things about it.

      [–]feartherexBatgirl (Cassandra) 8 points9 points  (2 children)

My friends and I adore IZombie. We're early-twenties women but I think it has wider appeal than that. My dad and I normally watch all the same comics shows but he wouldn't give it a shot because of the ridiculous name. The best way I've heard it described is slightly older Veronica Mars + zombies. It's a fun show and mixes procedural elements with a season long arc, and the show is much better paced than Flash for example. There are some instances of the "secrets as drama" thing which seems to plague most CW shows, but IZombie generally puts a fresh spin on it so that it doesn't seem so bad.

      [–]Js7868Ra's Al Cool 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Thanks for your review! I'm not an early-twenties woman, but seeing as almost all my other comic book shows are going on break next week, I'll probably start IZombie to fill the void. The more that I hear about it the more I get interested.

      [–]Fire_Bucket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a late 20s man and I think iZombie is a lot of fun. It's campy, daft, and the cast have seem to have a great chemistry and have a lot of fun doing it.

      [–]Treyomega6Darkseid 2 points3 points  (1 child)

      gotham is good

      [–]Novice89Aquaman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stopped early in the second season, just wasn't doing it for me but I heard it got really good so will come back eventually.

[–]jovialpinniped"I am normal. It's the rest of the world that's weird." 92 points93 points  (33 children)

This trailer had me up until "Hashtag Black Lightning". Come on now..

In all seriousness though, this looks a lot better than I expected it to.

      [–]Jay_R_KayBatfleck 36 points37 points  (0 children)

That was a little lame, though I'm sure it'll work better in the actual show -- like his daughter is giving him a social media push to make him more well knownand liked among her generation.

      [–]marcohtxStatic 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah it was corny, but then again its a young girl doing the narration. It would have been worse if it was an adult saying it.

      [–]Murder_Boners 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took that as something that is being made in order to create awareness in the show of Black Lightning.

      [–]E5150_JulianAll Hail Lord Darkseid!! 17 points18 points  (24 children)

This trailer had me up until "Hashtag Black Lightning". Come on now..

Was literally about to type this, I'll give it a watch but I expect a sharp decline in quality after season 1 as per CWs usual MO.

      [–]white_lightningBatman Beyond 31 points32 points  (16 children)

Legends of Tomorrow doesn't fit that.

      And honestly, neither does Arrow.

      [–]Novice89Aquaman 10 points11 points  (5 children)

Ummm neither does the Flash?! That favorite dinosaur episode or whatever the name was, ugh poor barry.

      [–]white_lightningBatman Beyond 6 points7 points  (4 children)

Yeah at the moment, it seems season 3 is where the shows begin to decline. Hopefully LoT will break the trend

      [–]Novice89Aquaman 5 points6 points  (3 children)

Arrow that's true. I was worried about Flash for a bit, but I think it'll be good.

      [–]white_lightningBatman Beyond 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Excited for the rest of Flash. I've only seen up through the mid-season finale, waiting for it to show up on netflix now, but from what I had seen season 2 was still better.

      [–]7V3Nsorryimlate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Flash has FINALLY picked up but it took too long. I think a binge rewatch will make it more obvious how much of this season was repeating the same worries over and over again with absolutely minimal progress.

Arrow 1-2 was very good. 3-4 were terrible. Supposedly 5 is pretty good.

Flash had a phenomenal first season and a very strong second season. Third has been iffy.

Supergirl has been mixed but I think most (and myself) preferred the first season. Second season has been meh at worst I think.

Legends was pretty weak in its first season but had a lot of promise. Season 2 knocked it out of the park.

      [–]Novice89Aquaman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah season 2 was pretty good.

      [–]The_Irish_JetRas Al Cool 2 points3 points  (6 children)

What? I thought S2 of Flash was way better than S1.

[–]daffydunkHeir to the Cowl 1 point2 points  (4 children)

S2 was really good, until Zoom was unmasked. Even then it was still good, until the finale. The S2 finale was awful.

      [–]ShadowPhoenix22Nightwing 1 point2 points  (3 children)

I'm incredibly surprising you feel that way. I thought the Season 2 finale was fantastic and much better than Season 1 finale. Was let down with 1, be interesting to see how I think of 3.

[–]daffydunkHeir to the Cowl 1 point2 points  (2 children)

The S1 finale was emotional and full of pathos. One of the best hours in super hero history.

The S2 finale came out of nowhere and introduced a lot of the plot issues and inconsistencies that plagued season 3.

      [–]ShadowPhoenix22Nightwing 0 points1 point  (1 child)

What issues and inconsistencies? Sure, the Time Remnant stuff was important in Season 2, the finale and especially now in Season 3.

The Wraiths set up a major player for Season 2 of Legends, which meant a dark, conclusive fate for one of the characters in the finale.

It was important to see whether Barry would give into thoughts and wants of revenge, though before that point, he had killed.

It also had a thrilling race, or battle, between protagonist Flash and antagonist Zoom.

What it did at the end was heartbreaking, saddening and important for Season 3, especially Kid Flash, Dr Alchemy and Savitar.

Season 3 has a lot of problems, but those are its' own doing, not necessarily all on Season 2 finale.

Season 1 finale let me down by making me feel the past would be changed, the entire show drastically altered and yet... Just disappointing, due to that, mainly, for me.

One of the best hours for me would be the Season 9 finale of Smallville, or Season 2 finale of Legends.

      [–]Murder_Boners 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah me too. And I'm digging this season too.

      [–]tony1grendel 5 points6 points  (2 children)

It was "hashtag Black Lightning's back"

      [–]DCAbloob 3 points4 points  (1 child)

If anyone tried to hashtag that as is, it wouldn't work since the apostrophe would break up the hashtag.

      [–]ShadowPhoenix22Nightwing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      True.

      [–]Novice89Aquaman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

      Same

      [–]ShadowPhoenix22Nightwing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What did you expect it to look like?

      [–]ConfusionGrowsEl Mayarah 32 points33 points  (3 children)

If this doesn't turn out to be the best of the 5 DC Universe shows on the CW I will eat my hat. This is a good trailer indeed.

      [–]timewraith303 6 points7 points  (2 children)

      No bamboozle?

      [–]maximyzer 6 points7 points  (1 child)

[–]AdamBombTVRiddle Me This... 6 points7 points  (0 children)

      Now thats a... Tasteful hat.

      [–]GladiatorLucy 13 points14 points  (2 children)

Wasn't expecting a trailer already. Definitely looks promising.

      [–]marcohtxStatic 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Looks like this was just from the pilot. I know they did start filming for the whole season though.

      [–]TeldarionNightwing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They did the same with the flash originally. The first trailers were all from episode 1

      [–]Ohiostate124 13 points14 points  (8 children)

Should have stuck with the first costume

      [–]Jay_R_KayBatfleck 20 points21 points  (1 child)

I like the current costume he has here -- kind of helps the older returning hero/Dark Knight Returns vibe this show has that he has something that helps give him an advantage on the field because he isn't in his prime anymore.

      [–]COMPLETEWASUKDoom Patrol 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I like that they've gone for the him getting back into the game angle, it's a different feel than all their other shows.

      [–]marcohtxStatic 9 points10 points  (4 children)

I appreciate the effort they put into it. They could have easily just given him a black leather jacket with lightning bolts on it, and call it day.

      [–]Thatoneguy567576 3 points4 points  (3 children)

That's the marvel approach to tv superheroes

      [–]HanSoloBolo 0 points1 point  (2 children)

And the DC approach too? Vibe definitely doesn't look like this.

[–]The_BoogeymanI never again let the fear of failure stop me. 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's because that's not the costume they're going for in the show. They're going for something like this.

      [–]jakeyb123Green Lantern 2 points3 points  (0 children)

      YUP!

      [–]ADarkKnightRisesWell, here I am 11 points12 points  (4 children)

Trailer has a "Daredevil on Netflix" vibe to it.

      [–]Sentry459Blue Lantern 5 points6 points  (3 children)

It reminded me of Luke Cage, as well.

      [–]marcohtxStatic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Luke Cage mixed with The Incredibles

      [–]Thatoneguy567576 3 points4 points  (1 child)

      But better

      [–]Sentry459Blue Lantern 5 points6 points  (0 children)

      Hopefully.

[–]AdamBombTVRiddle Me This... 12 points13 points  (3 children)

      "SuperDads"

      [–]NaijaBirdThe Flash 4 points5 points  (2 children)

And Quentin Lance, I mean the shit he's gone through.

      [–]ShadowPhoenix22Nightwing 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I never hear anything about him. Is he still alive?

      [–]NaijaBirdThe Flash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Still alive, still suffering from the losing a daughter, only for them to come back and lose them again. Arrow's latest episode really 'Missing' really hit him hard.

      [–]The_Irish_JetRas Al Cool 8 points9 points  (4 children)

This just makes me really want a Black Lightning book again. I'd love to see BL coming out of retirement in Chicago, with their reputation for gang violence and their strict ban on costumed heroes. While we're at it, could we get a Vixen title, with her set up in Atlanta? (Yeah, I know she's supposed to be from Detroit, but way too many characters are from there, there's no fashion industry in Detroit, and there's no book set in the American Southeast)

      [–]marcohtxStatic 2 points3 points  (2 children)

DC recently settled some things with Tony Isabella, so I wouldn't be surprised if he pops back up in the comics. I hope he gets a Young Animal series.

      [–]DCAbloob 1 point2 points  (1 child)

FWIW, Isabella is in a Facebook group devoted to the show and has been supportive of the show.

      [–]marcohtxStatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      That sounds awesome.

      [–]ShadowPhoenix22Nightwing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least Vixen had a One Shot after Justice League vs Suicide Squad and she's in Justice League of America.

Hopefully this can mean a Rebirth or Young Animal series for BL.

[–]WallyGropiusShade the Changing Girl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

idk how he will stop the 100 if they have Clarke on their side

      [–]NebularNarwhal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

      Wow this actually looks awesome!

      [–]SteveAryan 3 points4 points  (5 children)

One difference from the other CW shows, apart from him being a retired hero coming back, is that the trailer clearly shows one of his daughters developing her powers, so there's going to be that to contend with, finding out about her power, training her, helping her become Thunder I'm guessing.

      [–]marcohtxStatic 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I think both have powers. The other sister looks to have set off those cars while jogging.

      [–]SteveAryan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, they do in the comics, I just wondered if they were going to bring both of them in at the same time in the TV show. Maybe.

      [–]ShadowPhoenix22Nightwing 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I didn't realise she was Thunder, or had forgotten. I thought of Static, but knew Virgil was he.

      [–]SteveAryan 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Yeah, in theory, Thunder and Lightning, are his two daughters with powers.

      [–]ShadowPhoenix22Nightwing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lightning! Feck. Should've remembered or known about her, I only got to remembering Thunder when you mentioned her.

I was even saying to my Dad watching the trailer how I know hardly anything about Black Lightning, so I couldn't remember about Thunder, didn't know about Lightning.

      Heh ha, that's awesome.

I was even asking my Dad did he think the daughter was inheriting her Dads' powers, due to the glowing hands.

      He said yes.

      [–]orgeezuz 3 points4 points  (3 children)

70% it will be awesome 30% it will suck

90% CW will cancel the show because the main character is black. ...nah, I'm just kidding. CW doesn't know how to cancel a show.

      [–]NaijaBirdThe Flash 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Frequency and No Tomorrow would have like to have a word 😂

      [–]ShadowPhoenix22Nightwing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So would Tomorrow People, Cult and Containment.

      [–]HanSoloBolo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CW is also looking for more diversity the last few years. As long as someone is sexy, they've got a place on that network.

      [–]GeoffIsOurOnlyHopeSuperman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If I was her I'd be scared of The 100......Clarke will do anything to protect her people.

      [–]SyKrysus 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Let me guess the plot of a CW season 1. "You said you retired from being a hero. YOU LIED TO ME!"

      [–]stormespGreen Arrow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

      Looks good.

      [–]u__no__hoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

      FUCK. YES.

      [–]Genesis2ndRed Robin 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Man, this trailer basically had three episodes worth of 'this city' speeches. I really hope that's a CW-thing they tone down for the show.

Sweet to see a CW costume that isn't a souped-up leather jacket.

And this'll be difficult to convey properly, i think, but at no point in the trailer did the show come off as being heavy on race, despite the african american main-cast. I get that there's a place for stories about the race-related challenges a minority group faces, which was big in Luke Cage, based on the few episodes I watched, but I still think the next step is having prominent minority actors feature in shows where they just happens to be a minority character...

      [–]RPGZero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not to mention, that approach is more successful. What made shows like Family Matters make such great strides back in the day was that they treated an on screen black family like it was a completely normal thing.

      [–]jakeyb123Green Lantern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This looks pretty good ! I think the whole family aspect is something that's different enough to stand out and I'm looking forward to it.

I still don't like the costume , I don't really get why it needs to have lights on it. If it only lit up when he wore it and it was to show pulsating electricity to scare people I could sort of get it, but we see on the bench that it actually has lights in the suit.Plus that old suit looked great....Oh well.

      [–]mrmazzzMother Panic 1 point2 points  (6 children)

Curious to see how this turns out, older hero and family melodrama dynamic isn't exactly cw core group. They're more a teen melodrama network, and this is aimed at the "old" people.

Still looks good nice enough trailer. Look forward to the eventual retcon into the DCWverse of some sort or another.

[–]unilordxThe Best Stories Become Canon 4 points5 points  (3 children)

My guess is that it will be like Joe West if he was the main character, and had powers.

[–]AdamBombTVRiddle Me This... 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Joe does have powers... His power is the love of his kids.

[–]unilordxThe Best Stories Become Canon 6 points7 points  (1 child)

      And sing jazz

[–]AdamBombTVRiddle Me This... 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Some say thats the most important power of all.

      [–]rhodetolove[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah it was originally pitched to Fox but they decided to give it up, so it doesn't look like a CW show.

      [–]marcohtxStatic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He has two young daughters who are right in that YA age group, so I wouldn't be surprised if alot of their storylines fit into the CW wheelhouse.

      [–]mokopo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I'm the only one here that does 't like it, it looks like it should be a youtube show from 5 years ago.

      [–]Killercroc22Superman 1 point2 points  (5 children)

Looks really awesome. I've skipped all the Arrowverse shows this season, but I might check this out.

I'm also looking forward to the inevitable comic that'll come out when the show does.

[–]AdamBombTVRiddle Me This... 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Dude, LoT was amazing this season.

      [–]Krak2511 6 points7 points  (2 children)

And Arrow redeemed itself, this season has been on par with the first two imo.

      [–]DuEbrithiIBlue Lantern 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Definitely. The amazing parts completely overshadow the couple of hiccups this season had. It's actually the finale I look forward to the most...What a weird thing to say...

      [–]Krak2511 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely looking forward to it, so many amazing characters coming together. After the terrible S4 finale, I'm so happy that there will actually be a good final battle.

[–]bvanboveBlue Lantern Flash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very excited. I have minimal exposure to Black Lightning in the comics, but I did like him almost immediately. The show looks good and I will definitely be watching.

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

The costume looks better in action, but there's definitely room for improvement. Cress Williams looks like a giant when he's strutting around in it, though.

Saw that that he used that one gangster as a human shield. I wonder just how lethal he'll be.

      [–]Mr_HIghways_EndThe Flash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It looks like he is going to kills some fools. There was a shot of a bunch of dead gangsters with what looked like lightning burns.

Doesn't look too bad. Hopefully Grace Choi shows up eventually.

      [–]InfamousPTBluebird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like Thunder is gonna have a pretty large role, so I wanna see Grace somewhere or anywhere actually been missing her since new 52 happened.

      [–]ArabianAftershockBlue Lantern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had no idea this was gonna be a thing, this actually looks pretty decent

      [–]Sentry459Blue Lantern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks pretty good. It seems different in tone from the Arrowverse shows, which is interesting. His costume looks great, and I also like that he can siphon electricity from his surroundings, I forgot he could do that.

      [–]vey323 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Suit looks kinda hokie, but otherwise I'm intrigued

I'll admit, I was kinda hoping for something on Static, but this looks interesting too. I don't know a whole lot about Black Lightning, but perhaps for now i'll keep it that way for now to have some wow factor when it airs.

        [–]HoboVikingReverse Flash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really hope they avoid the CW constant drama we normally see.

        [–]XRarehunterXRed Hood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm really hoping this is going to be good but I cant help but think got that suit looks horrible, it honestly looks like those pics you see of captain America from back in the 70's outfit but with CGI from 5-10 years ago.

        [–]rodneyckPlastic Man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The story looks interesting, but again with the poorly designed CW suits. It looks like something out of the 90's... Power Rangers Unite! Why are the electric symbols on his chest glowing like an over-powered neon light? The only thing missing is the word "Vacancy." If you are into CW "bubblegum" type dramas, you are set here. Maybe one day we will get a Netflix/HBO R-rated gritty, dirtier feel DC series. That is what I am waiting for.

        [–]Koalitygainz_921 0 points1 point  (0 children)

meh guess its cool not a hero I'm all that interested in

        [–]alchemeron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The costume looks pretty awful. I'm kind of astonished by it. The lightning effects are also pretty bad. They're more like generic light powers as opposed to lightning powers.

That said, I still want it to be good.
