Hit the nail on the head. B-movie horror has you cheering for the villain, because the protagonists are insufferable; it takes a really well-made horror film to get you to cheer for the protagonist.

It's also worth noting that the white-people-dinner-party is easily the most unsettling part of the movie. That's something most people can empathize with.
