Greetings, dear redditors. Today, we are proudly presenting our new project which will hopefully be of interest to the community: r/anime Writing Club!

Recently there have been growing concerns about the state of the subreddit, and they were mostly about a lack of good written content. Indeed, there are a few essays and reviews which reach the frontpage now and then, however it's evident that the subreddit has been dominated by fanart, clips and announcements. It isn't necessarily a bad thing; although we feel that content which is harder to consume isn't fairly represented on the subreddit. With that in mind, we decided to create the r/anime Writing Club.

Here are the goals of this project:

  • shift the focus of discussion from seasonal anime to older shows, which get less attention on r/anime;
  • bring back some quality content to the frontpage of r/anime;
  • create a platform for people who want to write essays but are concerned their work might not be recognized;
  • establish a dedicated community of devoted writers who might represent r/anime in the future and follow up with more projects and opportunities;
  • help out fellow writers with quality and honest feedback on their writing.

So what can we offer to those who decided to join the project? Here are few things:

  1. Quality feedback. Many people are asking how exactly to improve their writing, and this is where we provide it.
  2. Special rules of posting. All essays are going to have a distinct flair, will be promoted on r/anime twitter and submitted every week on a specific day - all of that is done with the goal to create a place for written content on r/anime to exist and be noticed.
  3. There is going to be a wiki page with all essays archived, so even after threads are gone from the frontpage they will be easily accessible to public from here.

Alright, so how exactly are we going to make this work? Let's say you want to join the club; these are the steps you're going to complete:

  1. Fill in a form that we offer. It isn't going to be time-consuming or hard, however some prior writing experience is welcoming. It would be also helpful if you already have a clear idea of what you want to be writing about. You can explore any anime-related topic you want (be creative!), although you are expected to meet a certain quality threshold. Forms will be released in near future.
  2. After some time we contact you and you will be assigned an editor. Don't be scared: editors are people who are going to help you with writing an essay, not dictate what or how to write. Their main task is to provide feedback on your writing. All credit goes to you (the author), however you're encouraged to work closely with an editor. They are nice and helpful people.
  3. You will be given a month to write an essay, and you also have a deadline to meet. One of the most important aspects of the project is consistency of posting - all essays are going to be submitted at specific time every week on Sunday.
  4. After your work is approved by an editor, you wait till the day when your essay is to be posted... and then post it. Congratulations!

Current list of editors:

After some deliberation we decided to open forms immediately with this announcement. If you want to become a part of r/anime Writing Club, fill this little form.

Our first essay will be posted tomorrow (Sunday, 18:00 UTC), so keep an eye out for it!

That is pretty much it. We hope that this project will allow writers to hone their skills and create an opportunity for them to post their works, as well as make it easier for people to read quality essays on r/anime. If you have any questions or feedback, please leave it in the thread.

P.S. Keep in mind that r/anime Writing Club is in no way related to WT! threads, and both projects are meant to coexist fulfilling different goals.

This is a weekly thread to get to know r/anime’s community. Talk about your day-to-day life, share your hobbies, or make small talk with your fellow anime fans.

Although this is a place for off-topic discussion, there are a few rules to keep in mind:

  1. Be courteous and respectful of other users.

  2. Discussion of religion, politics, depression, and other similar topics will be moderated due to their sensitive nature. While we encourage users to talk about their daily lives and get to know others, this thread is not intended for extended discussion of the aforementioned topics or for emotional support.

  3. Roleplaying is not allowed. This behaviour is not appropriate as it is obtrusive to uninvolved users.

  4. No meta discussion. If you have a meta concern, please raise it in the Monthly Meta Thread and the moderation team would be happy to help.

  5. All r/anime rules, other than the anime-specific requirement, should still be followed.

EVERYBODY, PUT YOUR HANDS UP!

Hi r/anime!

Death Parade is the most recent addition to my top ten favorites list, and considering the last attempt to hold a rewatch for it was two years ago and didn't finish, I’m super excited to host this one. But first I need to gather an audience who’ll be just as excited as me, don’t I? That’s what this interest thread is for!

What is Death Parade?

Taken right from MAL with a few minor tweaks:

After death, there is no heaven or hell, only a bar that stands between reincarnation and oblivion. There the attendant will challenge pairs of the recently deceased to a random game in which their fate of either ascending into reincarnation or falling into the void will be wagered. Whether it’s bowling, darts, air hockey, or anything in between, each person’s true nature will be revealed in a ghastly parade of death and memories, dancing to the whims of the bar’s master. Welcome to Quindecim, where Decim, arbiter of the afterlife, awaits!

Death Parade follows these people receiving judgment—until a strange, black-haired guest causes Decim to begin questioning his own rulings.

Death Parade is what happened when Madhouse decided they were going to expand the concept of Death Billiards into a 12-episode long TV show. Since that means the story is an original work, first-timers don’t have to worry about Madhouse’s reputation for unfinished adaptations! Death Parade tells its story just like it wants to, no “go read the LN” required.

How do I know if this is for me?

Unfortunately there’s no WT! for Death Parade yet so I can’t just link one to you. Instead I’ll say that Death Billiards can in fact serve as a good taste of what the first few episodes of Death Parade are like. If you can find it, give it a shot to see if this rewatch is for you. I’m hesitant to include it as part of the rewatch proper due to the apparent lack of legal streams, but if I was just blind and completely missed one, please let me know and I’ll change the plans accordingly.

Other than that? Death Parade isn’t just some game anime, it’s also a mystery and a psychological thriller. If you like those kinds of shows, I’m sure you’ll enjoy Death Parade!

What’s the planned schedule?

Ideally the rewatch will start on August 1st, with the threads going up at 2 p.m. EDT. It’ll be one episode a day, with a post-series discussion afterwards.

Some interest threads go ahead and include a table with the planned schedule on it, but what with the possibility of including Death Billiards in it (if someone else knows of a legal stream for it or if there’s enough interest in including it regardless), I’ll hold off on making a full table until the official announcement thread.

To gauge the interest in including Death Billiards in this rewatch, I have made a poll for you guys to decide. If the two yes answers have more combined votes than the no answer does, I’ll be going with whichever yes answer has more votes. The official announcement thread/one-week reminder will go up in four days, that’s when I’ll announce the results of the poll. That should be enough time for you guys to plan accordingly!

Alright I’m in, where can I watch it?

because.moe is such a good site for this! Use that website to find it if regional availability screws you over, but otherwise Death Parade can be found on Crunchyroll, Funimation, Hulu, and… apparently also on Yahoo?

Thanks for popping in to check this out!

See you all at Quindecim!

I remember watching Kakegurui when it aired and while I enjoyed it, I never felt any tension or any sense of stakes. Sure there were billions of yen worth of bets but it just didn't feel like there was any impact to it. All in all, it was a fun ride, but that show felt more like popcorn material

Earlier today I decided to give Kaiji a try just for fun. And damn...

If Kakegurui is popcorn, this is Kobe fucking beef... Every single moment has so much tension, and everything feels so real and heavy. I couldn't wait to see what would happen!

The crazy thing is that I never seen people talking about Kaiji. I guess it never got it's fair share of spotlight.

Name an anime show that you are on the fence about & others will tell you why you should or shouldn't watch it, based on their own experience with it & your own personal taste in anime.

Remember to link your anime profile after listing a show(s).
