This is something I’ve never understood. Why does it matter? Is having girls considered a disappointment? This happens A LOT with people I know; if they have a girl, they try to have a boy, and if they have a girl again, they will keep going until they have a son. So they end up with 4 girls and a son. What is with these ideas? My aunt literally cried when she found out she had a girl because her mother in law wanted a boy. I really hate this about our culture!!
Just for fun. Let’s brainstorm plot details, character types, casting ideas, filming locations, etc. We can go crazy and treat this as a total parody, or be serious and pitch an actual movie that tackles being an Arab in today’s world.
In our Assyrian community we are getting a ton of refugees from Syria and Iraq.
Probably 100% of the syrian assyrians can speak our language but some of them from Iraq who lived in arab or kurd cities like Mosul werent allowed to so they only speak Arabic now.
My parents were born in the ME but cant speak arabic since they fled at a young age. My grandparents know a little but not at all fluent.
Hence I know nothing in arabic.
Some of the ones who dont speak Sureth are learning it but they also have to learn English so its a bit much for them.
I would like to learn a bit so I can help these people. They go to church and there are people who speak Arabic there but not enough since most of us only speak sureth and English.
Hence I dont want to learn the Standardized Arabic at all, only a dialect. I have asked a few Arabs I know and they try to force me to learn Standardized Arabic because they say its holy and perfect but to me its more important to help these people and understand them too.
so please don't ask me to do that :)
Any help is appreciated. Thanks!
hi guys, looking at most Arab countries today I think it is safe to say that we are in a very bad shape. Which Arab country do you think will be first to leave the swamp?
This is our weekly gathering for political (and other) news from around the Arab World. Please state the country or region in your post, and if someone from your country has already made a news-round-up that you think is insufficient, please make a comment on their round-up rather than making a new top level post. This is to reduce clutter. Outside of this weekly thread, rule 3 remains enforced, namely that political news articles are not allowed.
