Walmart mad stingy, they will literally close a store if they try to unionize

level 2

They should all try to unionize simultaneously. Just to see what happens.

level 3
170 points · 1 month ago · edited 1 month ago

That would accomplish the same thing as a strike my man.

Edit for spelling mistake

level 3

They should, but their staff turns over twice a year so they could literally fire everybody and shut down for a week and come back on top with scabs at first and then new employees a week after that

level 4

They'd lose investors loads of money if they did this.

level 5
50 points · 1 month ago

Yeah, an they close entire stores to stop them unionising. It's an ideological war as well. If they give an inch their entire stance is ruined.

Unions could bring Walmart crashing to its knees because of how they treat their employees, and they know it. They'll fully go out of business instead of letting unions happen.

level 6

Pr would be horrendous for them. Their stocks would crash losing investors millions. They'd probably send the whole market into a panic. No CEO or board would do that. What's probably more likely is they'd ask the government to get involved.

level 7
4 points · 1 month ago

That's true actually, they'd definitely heavily lobby to do whatever they can to ban unions. And I imagine the US government would cave.

level 5

Yes they would. But they would win is my point. PR would be terrible for them though and long-term they might lose but that's kind of intangible

level 6

Pr not to mention disrupting the market as a whole. No CEO or board will sign off on that.

level 7

It would be a huge deal and the number of other companies this would impact is staggering and for that reason alone they may decide to deal.. but good luck getting all 2 million to buy in.

level 4

Depending on the country, in Canada, you can't fire employees because of a union. They have to shut down the company, and it has to remain closed for a few months before being allowed to open it again.

level 3

They hire people who can’t afford to take a stand like that

level 2

Look up why they don’t have a real meat market in their stores.

ONE tried to unionize

I mean. It's essentially stealing workers money and rights, which is en masse.... So yeah.

level 4

To me either stealing is bad or it’s not. If you think Walmart is bad for stealing then stealing in response isn’t a valid rationalization.

level 5

what??

level 4

level 5

That is literally the worst example ever given. Ever.

level 6

How so? Nobody is forcing you to work anywhere. Employment is a transaction between you and your employer, just like my pen deal, and if the deal is bad, you can walk away. What do you think is missing?

Jesus Christ people, you’re acting like Walmart is some sort of oppressive governmental regime, but their entire existence depends on willful transactions. Stop shopping there and/or working there, and it will change or go away. Nowhere is anything like “theft” happening to anyone. Stop acting so goddamn helpless.

level 7

Think about the type of people Walmart typically employs- people who have a hard time getting a job anywhere else. People who can't simply just "not work there", it's a bit more complicated than what you make it seem. You sound like someone who hasn't ever had to work a lot level job like at Walmart.

level 8

When Walmart didn’t exist, what exactly were these people doing? Of course there are other options. It may not always be easy (life never is), but as I said, Walmart doesn’t owe anyone a damn thing, and we don’t owe Walmart anything either. That’s how it works.

“You sound like someone” who would rather make judgements about a person rather than make decent arguments. You know nothing about me or my background, and it wouldn’t be particularly relevant even if you did.

I hate how I cant steal on Walmart.com.

PS: Although I did technically stole from the website twice when I got a refund on two items that I never received... but then found them in the lobby by the mailbox the next day.

PPS: But really, all I did was buy one Timex watch/Funko Pop and got the next one free.

I "stole" from Nike once, ordered a hoodie and sweatpants returned the pants because they were a little too tight, I check my bank account a week later and they refunded the money for the pants and hoodie as well lmao

level 3
THIS NIGGA FUCKING CUPCAKES72 points · 1 month ago

This reminds me, I need to get a Nike hoodie.

PS: And some (off brand but still stylish) sweatpants if womens are crotch watching when we wearing em. Its time for me to dress sluttier.

level 4

Best believe we crotch watching.

Aye!

PS: "Ok Google, find the most affordable sweatpants that induces crotch watching with free shipping"

I suggest grey ones.

Thats like $15 more than I wanna spend on slutty clothes.

level 3

One time I received a package I didn’t order, addressed to me, from Victoria’s Secret. I had never ordered from them. I kept a couple things and exchanged the rest for other stuff I liked. A week later I get a refund check for the full amount of the first “order” lol. So weird but I got $200 worth of stuff and money for free 😂

level 2

walmart sent me the wrong thickness of a king size memory foam mattress once and they were like 'well bring the wrong mattress back' i had to explain it wasnt possible because i drove a 2 door car and the mattress was larger than the car. they eventually let me keep both so i stacked them on eachother and had like 18 inches of memory foam.

level 3
THIS NIGGA FUCKING CUPCAKES8 points · 1 month ago

Dang, you working with 18"? I cant compete with that.

level 4

i left it when i moved. but i ordered the same bed from walmart after the move, except a 12", instead of the 10" + 8".

considering i got a king size mattress for $330 id say its not a bad deal at all and im pretty sure i will buy this bed every time i need one from now. this the 3rd time ive gotten this bed and i think 12" is honestly where it's at. the 8" one i had first wasnt bad. 18" just felt baller tho. i like a tall ass bed.

level 5

A king mattress? Yea, I definitely cant compete with that.

PS: I only love my queen sized bed and my momma

What a lot of people don't seem to realize is that stealing from a store will fuck over the employees, too. When money is stolen from a store, one of the first things the owners' will do is take that money out of their employees' bonuses. You're taking money from people who need it just as much as you do.

level 2

What a lot of people don't seem to realize is that stealing from a store will fuck over the employees, too.

This is absolutely right. Hourly associates that work full-time qualify for a bonus up to $550 every quarter (4 per year). It's possible to qualify for it if the store hits goals, maintains profitability, beats sales %ages, and Pickup Today operates efficiently. A store near me hit it for an entire year straight, so it's 100% possible to do. Your management team needs to be good and your department managers need to be on their A-game.

When money is stolen from a store, one of the first things the owners' will do is take that money out of their employees' bonuses

It's calculated in profitability. A yearly inventory will find out the "Shrink" of the store and leverage that against all profits made over a period of three years. Essentially, Walmart will take funds from a store on what it thinks you will lose to theft. It's a three year average, so if your store is high-theft for three years, your bonus is smaller.

You're taking money from people who need it just as much as you do.

Again, this is 100% right. People that steal are stealing more from the associates than they are of the business they hate so much. People try and justify stealing because "it's Walmart", but at the end of the day, it hurts the associates more than it does Walmart. Walmart just writes off the shrink out of the store's profitability and makes the store pay for it over three years.

You're not cool, hip, or "anti-corporate"; you're just a stupid thief.

level 3

Yea but Walmart corporate wrote the bonus policy up. It’s sort of like if someone kidnaps your kid and calls you and says, if you call the cops I’m going to kill the kid. That doesn’t mean it’s your fault if the other guy murders the kid when you call the cops. The psycho kidnapper did.

level 4

You're right, they did write up how bonuses were calculated. But at the same time, they aren't required to give a bonus. Walmart also has plenty of opportunity to win extra money with their VPI program, weight loss program, and their extra prizes for having the most credit card referrals and just recently they had a contest for the Walmart app as well.

If people are going to try and spin this to say "theft is ok cuz it's Walmart and they don't give a big enough bonus to their employees, so fuck 'em", then I can't really argue with people that are okay with stealing like that.

level 5

I don’t think stealing is ok, I just get queasy when it sounds like people think Walmart is a good employer because they throw their employees a few scraps. Walmart’s aggressive anti-union policy is gross.

A pimp can beat up one of his hoes, and then run her a warm bath and tell her how much he cares, and she’ll be so glad he fixed her that she’ll forget it was him that broke her in the first place. -paraphrasing Chappelle

level 6

Walmart has a lot of work to do as far as caring for their employees. By far they are the worst at retention and rewards for employees that are here long term.

I can't think of a worse employer than Walmart. The store you end up in is your only experience usually. There are management teams that definitely make it worthwhile to work there, and there are other stores that have a management team so bad that I wouldn't wish working there.

Walmart just announced another round of job eliminations to "save the bottom line" and it's fucking absurd. I'm tired of it and I personally don't exactly see myself here in another year or two. Shits getting bad.

level 7

For what it’s worth, it sounds like Amazon is worse.

level 8

A lot of the complaints they have, stores that aren't well staffed have similar issues. No breaks, being reprimanded for taking bathroom breaks, AC doesn't turn on til it's 80F, terrible management, and expectations that are too fucking high.

Since Amazon isn't customer facing, they can get away with more than Walmart for sure.

level 3

550? geez

level 2

ehhhh, see the owners aren’t running on a tight budget, they are already giving their employees as little as possible at walmart. So occasionally stealing from walmart will do nothing. Now of we had a national everybody steal from walmart day then something might change. You and ur boiz heading up and stealing a box of tea and some snacks really won’t do much. I can’t speak for walmarts specific bonuses they give to employees but where I work we get no employee discounts and I can’t think of employee benefits that, if they were to be removed, would ever be noticeable. The ONLY thing I can really see a company doing that will actually hurt their employees is take away raises that were given which I have never heard of happening near me but Im assuming it happens sometimes.

level 3

In some stores, a quarterly bonus can be as big as $550 afiak. When somebody steals, say, a bottle of shampoo, it's coming out of someone's paycheck- and we all know it's not coming out of corporate's. It comes out of our bonuses. So you're stealing from us, the employess who run the registers, the employees who empty the garbage bins and clean the restrooms.

People can justify it by saying the don't steal often or that Walmart deserves it, but that shit adds up and hurts our livelihood.

level 2

In all my years as a retail worker I have not once in my life recieved a bonus. I'm not saying people should steal but I'm also saying that stores will find whatever bullshit reasons they can to not give it to you. Especially a company like Walmart that's known for constantly fucking over their employees.

level 3

While I can't speak for every store, mine is very transparent about bonuses. We have weekly meetings to discuss things such as bonuses, sales, and theft. If we get a small or nonexistant bonus, we have numbers to see how and why. Every time but once, it was theft that brought it down.

Out of all the places I've worked, Walmart has been the most transparent and worker-friendly.

level 2

As if they treated their employees like human beings. I think of it as pay back for making everybody subsidize their workers they refuse to pay decent wages or benefits

level 3

pay back for making everybody subsidize their workers they refuse to pay decent wages or benefits

For one, the biggest people you're hurting are the employees - not the company itself. We get a MyShare every quarter and it's based on profitability, sales to plan, and Pickup Today. When you steal, it hurts on profitability. Employees that work 40 hours a week are eligible for up to $550 as a bonus... four times a year. (Before you say it's probably impossible to do, a store near me did it 4 times in a row. The 5th, they were 2% away from hitting it again).

Secondly, if $11/hr isn't a decent wage, I don't know what you tell you. In Missouri, the minimum wage is $7.50/hr. $11/hr is $3.50/hr above the state's minimum. I was able to get by fairly well with $10/hr at 40 hours a week when I was hourly. I'm not telling you that $11/hr makes you rich or anything, but if I could push carts (unskilled labor) and make $10/hr in a state that pays $7.50/hr minimum... that isn't a bad deal by any means.

Don't steal. It's that easy. You're taking money out of an employee's paycheck instead of Walmart's billions and billions of profits every year.

level 4

Yeah stealing is kinda always wrong. Also I’d say $15 is a living wage, but I’m sure that would bankrupt Walmart with their billions and billions of profits. Also $11 an hour is doable if you work 40hrs a week... except Walmart nearly exclusively hires part time to avoid having to provide insurance and other benefits. Walmart treats people like shit and that’s why I’d feel less guilty I think.

level 5

Obviously not, because they're stealing.

The point I'm trying to make is that there are a lot of people out there that think, "Walmart's a big corporation! It's okay to steal from them because they're a big corporation and I don't like them"

While you may hate Walmart, the associates that work at the store have nothing to do with Walmart Corporate. They're just there so they can earn money and actually pay for the shit they want instead of stealing it like some moron.

level 2
-3 points · 1 month ago

Isn't it more that you're stealing from the owners and then they steal from their employees?

Saying you're stealing from the employees is just not true.

level 3

While you could semantically argue that you aren't technically stealing from workers, your actions are still causing harm to the working class.

If you don't like Walmart's policies, you certainly aren't alone. But stealing from them is only making the problems worse.

level 1

Haha being a thief is funny!

If you're willing to steal from Wal-Mart you're willing to steal from Mom & Pop's local convenience store. Theft is still a crime.

level 4

I get the sentiment but that’s simply not true. In college when I was denied from the food bank for working too many hours I stole produce and pasta from Walmart once a week to eat. I would have never done that from a local shops ever. Just cause you care less about money hungry corps doesn’t mean your willing to do that everywhere

level 5
Comment deleted1 month ago(0 children)
level 6

How was I exploiting anything? I worked three jobs and went to school and couldn’t afford to eat. No I wasn’t partying or buying drugs. I had rent and loans and books to pay for.

level 7

If you're making enough money to be denied by the food bank then you're making enough to afford food outside of it. Thousands of people who don't need to use the food bank and are literally taking food out of the mouths of people who genuinely need it. It doesn't mean you're engaged in vices like drugs, just that you've made poor financial decisions with the money from your 3 jobs.

level 8

Or just hear me out. I’m supporting myself through college which is very expensive. They didn’t look at my income whatsoever they looked at my hours worked. One job was filming with ESPN but because I was a student I was paid 7.25 another job was delivering newspapers and despite how long it took I was paid for the day and my third job was a trampoline park that consistently didn’t pay us and promised us our pay until they eventually went under. 80% of my income was rent. And I had three roommates. 10% was gas 10% school expenses. It shouldn’t be the case in America for a student to work three jobs and still not have enough to eat. The only better financial decisions that could have been made was leaving the trampoline park earlier.

level 9

Your poor decision was working for an employer who didn't pay you.

level 10

Lol well thanks for letting me know man. Next time I’ll just see in the future that my job will go bankrupt. Noted.

level 3

Except it's not the corporation that hurts from it, it's the employees that work there.

I know it’s illegal to steal from Walmart so I don’t recommend it. But is it immoral to steal from them? I kinda feel like it’s just a business decision at this point... like... the shit they do to make it cheap is just as bad as a person just taking it. No?

level 3

Yes, you're definitely not making it worse to steal things. That certainly won't encourage them to take further cost cutting efforts to work around the shrinkage.

level 4

I think they’ll do that either way.

Also their signs say the cost of stealing is passed on to their customers - incentivizing them to shop at stores that are less evil.
