Thanks for reposting my photo! This is from the same morning, different shot. I liked this one a bit more after taking some time looking at it, the smaller trolley felt to me like it gave a better sense of scale.

Can I repost your photo onto my lock screen? It’s a cool picture

level 3

Sure!! Thanks for asking

level 2

How in gods name did you manage to have so little traffic in the area? Or did you manage to edit the traffic out of the photo?

level 3

This is sunrise on a Saturday, no editing needed.

level 4
13 points · 1 month ago

Wow, fantastic shot. In the times I’ve been to SF I have never thought there was a quiet hour, but I stand corrected

level 5

I went for a walk at dawn like this and it was almost empty, I only saw two people. A man lying facedown on the ground at a bus stop seemingly unconscious, and a crackhead eating her hoodie sleeve and periodically stopping to scream incoherently. SF is one hell of a place.

level 6

i hear if you really wanna see sights like this, go to tenderloin

level 7

I was staying in Nob Hill at the time, so yeah, in that general vicinity.

level 5

Thanks man! It’s a bit of a surreal feeling, very eery at times. I don’t live in the city, and I never intend to, so making the trek up from South Bay to experience it is pretty awesome

level 6

give me money to America,

I would have come, and at least see the sea ..

level 4

level 4

Why is the headlight on the back of the cable car on?

level 5

Not sure to be honest, maybe they forgot to turn it off?

level 2

Making me miss the bay even more, thanks a lot!

level 3

Cheers!

level 2

This photo is amazing! You earned an IG follower.

Edit: As expected, your Instagram is full of this kind of greatness. Are you a professional photographer?

level 3

Wow thank you so much!! Really appreciate it. I am not a professional by any means. I started with photography last year and currently am only able to shoot during The weekends primarily and edit during the week after work.

level 4

You deserve it. Great work. I've started trying to do the same recently, too. Just got back from a trip and have been editing after work at home, although my editing only consists of Photoshop Express.

If you wouldn't mind, could I message you with any photography questions? This is my Instagram. If you've got any time, I'd appreciate any advice/critiques you have. My Reddit history has a bunch, too. If not, no worries at all. Keep up the killer work!

level 5

Send me a DM on instagram and I’m happy to offer my advice!

level 6

Cheers! I will definitely take you up on that!

you should do the Bay bridge at sunset from Harrison St between 1st and Fremont. great view, wish I knew how to take good photos

level 3

Thanks for the recommendation! I actually posted a photo from that location last week on my Instagram (paulclark), I was considering sharing it here as well

level 2

Hey my friend and I are aspiring musicians, is there anyway I could pay you so we could use this as an album cover? It’s absolutely fantastic!

level 3

I’m definitely interested in that! I’d definitely like to check your music out also. Send me a private message or DM me on Instagram (paulclark) and let’s connect!

level 3
level 2

OP, credit this kind photographer

level 2

What I like about it is the perspective and the train being the center. :)

level 2

Surely there is more traffic than that in SF

level 3
15 points · 1 month ago

I live two blocks from California Street and walk through this exact intersection daily. This section is pretty light outside of rush hour. On a weekend morning it’s completely dead.

level 4

Wow I would’ve never guessed. I’m in Nashville, the traffic and population here is getting ridiculous. I always thought that places like sanfran would be way busier than here

level 5

Don’t be fooled. SF traffic is awful but it’s likely very early on a Saturday morning in an area predominantly for business.

level 5

It depends on the area for sure. If you go 3 blocks over to Bush - which feeds into the freeway and bridge - you’ll be backed up for days, even on the weekend. Traffic still flows fairly smoothly in this particular area during the weekdays, but it’s not this barren.

level 4

Is this California St?

level 5

Yup.

level 2
3 points · 1 month ago

Can you tell me a little about the settings you used? Is this HDR?

level 3

This is a single shot, underexposed to retain the detail in the sky

level 2

Dude this is absolutely nuts. Mind if I share? Credit to Paul Clark ?

level 3

Thank you! Where are you intending to share? If on Instagram that’s fine, but not on reddit please. I’ve never been able to share one of my own photos before here

level 2

If you’re in the city, people get shitty if you refer to the cable cars as trolleys

level 2

Fantastic photo! I visit SF a few times a year and this photo definitely gives me the good feelz.

level 2

What lens did you use to capture this? It's so crisp and clean!

level 2

Did you pjotoshop it?

level 1

This photo belongs to @paulclark on Instagram.

level 2

Thank you! Appreciate you looking out

level 3

California St?

level 4

level 5

Which intersection? I just can't call it.

(I lived at California and Polk for a few months)

I think he’s posted it on reddit too or someone else has already

I guess I was wrong it technically isn’t the same photo. Probably the difference of about a second but definitely the same photographer. http://goedhartvoordieren.nl/?page=r/CityPorn/comments/8txddi/san_francisco_1024x1280/?st=JJS0PQWE&sh=eb64a77e

Photographers take multiple shots of the same subject you know.

level 2

Why can’t posters fucking credit. They should gift the gold.

level 1

To the guy that gave the poster gold, why not give it to the photographer instead?

That would require a brain.

I love San Francisco too, just not the cost to live there. 4-5K for an apartment I can stretch both arms out and touch both walls. I guess if you're rich or inherited property, great for you.

level 3
30 points · 1 month ago

I live around the corner from this picture in a one bedroom with free parking that I pay $2600/month for with $80/month utilities that I split with my wife, so my monthly housing costs are $1340. Yes it's expensive but not as terrible as some might think.

level 4

$2600 is below market rate. You're rent controlled, which is not what somebody new would pay. The Financial District is much more expensive than this. Not $4 - $5k expensive, but $3500 isn't out of the ordinary.

level 5
6 points · 1 month ago

Nah I moved here in June 2017, I am rent controlled but haven't been here too long.

level 6

Not sure why somebody downvoted you. Did you get a deal or is there something going on with your place or what?

level 7
2 points · 1 month ago

I'm mean it's fairly small and not in a super nice building, but no, no deal or anything weird with the unit or building. For those in disbelief here are a bunch of similarly priced and equipped places in my neighborhood:

https://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/apa/d/id921-nob-hill-rmdld-1br/6642673215.html https://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/apa/d/slick-nob-hill-apartment-at/6646746108.html https://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/apa/d/beautiful-1-bedroom-in-the/6644060092.html https://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/apa/d/lower-nob-hill-698bushpowell/6638483413.html https://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/apa/d/like-2-bdrm-large-new-hwf/6618440878.html

I'd say the only atypical thing is the free parking, I bargained for that and got lucky.

level 8
-2 points · 1 month ago · edited 1 month ago

"Lower Nob Hill" is far from the halcyon scenes in the photo, that's Tenderloin crackhead nonsense that's sorrrttaaa starting to gentrify away. You still have to cross the TL to get there which nobody wants to do.

I have no idea why anyone would charge $2,300 for a 1-bedrom in the Fidi when 1-bedrooms in Parkmerced miles away from this with a fraction of things to do are $2,600.

Craigslist is hella scammy so it's a bad metric. Rents have not plummeted 33% in a year. Getting a thousand people to apply at $40/head is a great way to make money.

quickedit: Or I'm sadly mistaken. SF is not hiring as fast as it used to...

level 9
3 points · 1 month ago · edited 1 month ago

You're totally incorrect about the location disparity. Photo was taken from here:

https://www.google.com/maps/place/655+Stockton+St,+San+Francisco,+CA+94108/@37.7920341,-122.4099411,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x8085808c7b4d445d:0xa9d76ce1b4384d34!8m2!3d37.7920299!4d-122.4077471

The apartment I listed first is here:

https://www.google.com/maps/place/Stockton+St+%26+Pine+St,+San+Francisco,+CA+94108/@37.7913156,-122.4095502,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x8085808c0b4ac92b:0xe133968e0bb7f7ed!8m2!3d37.7913156!4d-122.4073615

It's a bit south on the same block, probably 200 feet from where the photo was taken. The others are probably within 3 blocks.

Also are you implying that all 5 Craigslist posts are a scam? When I looked for an apartment on CL I found 3 places I went and toured, none of the 3 were a scam.

EDIT: Second apartment is a bit further away, but probably in a better neighborhood, 3rd 4th and 5th apartments are all 2 blocks away. It doesn't sound like you live in this neighborhood nor are very familiar with it, Bush and north is not the TL at all, you need to go decently south and west to get into the TL.

level 10
0 points · 1 month ago · edited 1 month ago

So this was my mistake.

This isn't the FiDi like I previously said like three times that you didn't catch on, (I didn't correlate the damn photo with the map, sorrrrry), it's actually "around the block" from lower nob hill, and thus the shit rents are justified.

level 7

When someone tells you what the median rent is in SF, remember half of all apartments are cheaper than that

level 8

Aren’t those medium rents including rent control and below market rate that your average wage earner just couldn’t get?

level 9

No. When you see median rent statistics they're the median for available rents.

level 4

In just five years, the rent alone is $156,000, with zero equity. I'd rather own.

level 5

You got 30% to put down, go ahead.

level 6

completely not the point. his point is that he'd rather have a tangible piece of property that he owns, elsewhere, for what this guy essentially loses in financial assets in that same given time.

at the end of 5 years at $2600/mo in rent you gain nothing but the experience of living there. which, i'll give you, in SF for some people is obviously worth it.

but for others, it's a hard pill to swallow that you literally have obtained no physical asset for that $156,000 dollars you've paid.

level 7

Yes, my point still stands. Obviously you’d want some equity when it comes to monthly payments on the roof over your head. But housing prices are crazy too and 20-30% is your average down payment. 150K over nearly a year is crazy, but who has 200-300K to put as a deposit?

level 5
1 point · 1 month ago

A similar place here to buy is going to cost around ~$700k, let's say you put down 20% so you don't have to pay mortgage insurance, you're still paying ~$800 month in property taxes, ~$400 in HOA, $150 in homeowners insurance, another ~$100 in utilities that I'm not paying since it comes with the rent, then you have maintenance and interest you're paying. Of course owning is a great option but it's not as advantageous as you might think, you're also locked into a single unit for at least 5 years or you lose money on closing costs and don't get the $500k capital gains tax break, which I need to move sooner than 5 years so I wouldn't get that advantage. The decision to own isn't always so cut and dry.

level 4

Since you live here, when do you think this photo was taken? An early sunday?

level 5
1 point · 1 month ago

Yea that'd be my guess, the eastern sky is lit up and the lack of traffic support that theory.

level 3

Why does everyone e exaggerate so much about this’d? You sound ridiculous

level 4

dude, not an exaggeration, that's how much my friend is paying for a new apt in the haight.

level 5

4-5K for an apartment where you can tough both walls is absolutely not a thing. That price range itself is above average

level 6

well the touch both walls is... true/not true? Lots of apartments in sf are more long shaped than box shaped, especially if you live in a victorian. If the victorian is divided that way, a long hallway goes up and down your house, hence, you can touch both walls.

but yeah a 4-5k is average for a 2bd

level 7

well the touch both walls is... true/not true? Lots of apartments in sf are more long shaped than box shaped, especially if you live in a victorian. If the victorian is divided that way, a long hallway goes up and down your house, hence, you can touch both walls

doing some serious gymnastics there

but yeah a 4-5k is average for a 2bd

Yeah, and 2 bedroom apartments usually have more than one person sharing the burden, so the rent is actually 2-2.5K.

op was trying to make it seem like they paid 5K for a tiny studio where they could touch both walls; painfully obvious. idk why you're even arguing this

level 8

more than one person sharing the burden

not necessarily true, families w/ children and single breadwinners (which is actually really common in most of the US, just not all that common in the bay area) would carry the burden of 4-5k.

level 9

(which is actually really common in most of the US, just not all that common in the bay area)

less common than ever and still declining.

just not all that common in the bay area

then why even bring it up? again, op was not talking about a two bedroom so the point you're attempting to make is completely moot

level 3

Where in SF are you paying that much lol? Need housemates but then it’s definitely do-able. High. But doable.

level 3
1 point · 1 month ago

SF's average rent is actually around $1700 per month, when you count all the rent-controlled units (AKA the majority of rental units), SROs and public housing. Market rate stuff is where the prices get truly insane...

level 3

There's no there there anymore.

You're being downvoted for being negative, but that is the unfortunate reality. It's no secret that that whole region is extremely vulnerable to all sorts of geological/environmental risks, especially of the seismic variety.

To be clear, San Francisco can be rather amazing. No other city/region in North America has such a stunning balance between climate, scenery, and urbanism. Other places might beat it in a single category, but none of them offer such a complete package. That's a largely undiscussed reason for why it's so expensive -- it's so naturally desirable to begin with. Hell, living with the triple-digit heat here in Austin, I long for those nice temperatures on a near-constant basis.

But no place is perfect, and that's important to remember, too. The twin issues of the aforementioned cost of living (and all the related socioeconomic issues that go along with it) and seismic fragility will be it's undoing at some point. The real question is when. We can't just forget because it's inconvenient, because then it will be our undoing as well.

EDIT: And now I'm being downvoted, too. The circlejerk is on. Whatever.

level 4

It also smells like a badly cleaned public bathroom

This subreddit really needs a rule regarding crediting the original photographers. Something like this should be removed if it isn't sourced.
