I am arriving in Ecuador in a little more than two weeks. During my last visit I was asked by a migration agent if I had “insurance” and I assumed he meant health insurance. I said no and he waved me through. Apparently they were surveying people entering the country to see who was insured and who wasn’t. Now the law has changed and travelers health insurance is required. I have shopped around and have found insurance costing around $40 for the duration of my stay. Are there any other options? Are there any Ecuadorian options?

Hi! I'm terribly excited to visit Ecuador next week. Most of my days will be spent doing business things for three days, but I will be there for at least a week. I will be staying not far from Mall el Jardin. I am a solo female traveller, and my family (who is part Hispanic) is already scaring me a bit. I am coming form the US, so I am coming in late at night. My first question: what do the official taxis look like? One of my students, whose family is from Ecuador, that the official taxis have a camera and panic button. what should I look for? That being said, I heard the best way to travel in Quito is by taxi. What is the best way to grab taxis in the city? I heard I should avoid hailing them on the street. Last question, I don't want to bombard this sub with "what do you recommend," but I was thinking at least to visit Cotopaxi. I'm wondering what is the safest way to do as a female traveller? I will be not too far from hotels, so I was thinking about inquiring there, but I rather hear from other locals. Thank you!

Hola! Muchisimas gracias!

So i have quite a few questions about Ecuador because I want the best trip possible :-).
My girlfriend and I are traveiling in Ecuador for 30 days with start in Quito for 3 days, then 5 days in Amazon, 7 days from Quito to Guayaquil where we will try the Quilotoa Loop - then 9 days on Galapagos before traveling up the west coast and back to Quito for our flight home. If you guys can recommend something we just HAVE to see or visit please let us know. Other than that we love to experience different kinds of food and are fascinated by different kinds of animals (especially birds and whales - quite the nerd, i know :-)) - hope you guys can help us! Sitting here in Denmark and can't wait to see the beauty of Ecuador. THANKS

This may seem like an odd question, but do there exist small private charter flight companies within Ecuador in one form or another? I'm not talking about an airline like TAME or Avianca or a high priced "private jet" service.

I ask because I'm traveling to Cuenca and will be there for a few days then plan to go to Puerto Lopez all within a week. Some of the itineraries I've seen are lose an entire day on a bus or take a private car/drive yourself (which isn't that much faster). There are flights to Manta through the "normal" airlines like TAME/Avianca but they connect in Quito and the travel time makes it kind of pointless.

Maybe I'm looking too much for some travel 'hack' to cut down on time, but I do see there exist several small airports across the country. So far though the only small plane service I had seen was if you were traveling to some remote ecolodge in the amazon.

Traveling to Quito in a few days with small group and just wondering if there are any areas in the city that are generally known to be dangerous and that we should avoid? Same goes for lago agrio?

Dear community,

I am travelling to Quito on 21th of July and will spend 3 weeks in Ecuador. I have read about a festival to celebrate the founding of Guayaquil around July 25th but couldn't find any details online. The 24th also seems to be a holiday (birthday of Simon bolivar).

Is it worth it to head towards Guayaquil shortly after my arrival in Quito to partake in the festivities? Are there interesting rituals, traditional danced and music? Where in this big city are they located at? Is it safe? I'm not sure how big a role this should play in my travel plans.

If any of you know what to expect there please let me know. Thank you very much in advance.

I live in NZ and I'm thinking of moving to Cuenca and I'm going to be running an online business, so I need decent internet speed.

Is the internet speed alright? or is there anyway to improve it?

Thanks

I will be returning to Ecuador for the 4th time in exactly one month. My previous trips had me taking the Delta flight to Quito and I would take a bus from Carcelen the following day/night. Next month I will be flying Spirit to Guayaquil and landing at 10:30pm. I know the bus terminal is very close to the airport so I could probably be at the terminal at 12:00am. Are there any buses or busettas that leave for Cuenca at or around that time?

Got a yellow fever shot a while ago but the pharmacy where I got it at lost record of it so I can’t get the ‘yellow card’ that comes with it. Was wondering if they ask for proof of any vaccinations upon arrival?

Thanks!

My friend from Ecuador is looking at coming to visit me here in the UK for a couple of weeks (so it would just be a short-term visitor visa), and I was wondering if anyone had any experience/advice with the visa process for this.

I've looked online and it appears to be very straight forward, I guess I'm just wondering if that's too good to be true lol.

I’m close to Quito and I’ve got two German Sheppards. I’m looking for someplace to hike or visit like Cayambe where I can take the dogs on a leash.

So my younger brother is getting married to an Ecuadorian girl, they're having the (1st) wedding in Quito and I've officially been asked to be the best man (there will be a second but smaller wedding in the states at some point). I've never been so my knowledge of the culture is limited. I've also never been best man before but am mostly familiar with the role in a typical American wedding. What should I know about Ecuadorian culture and how it relates to weddings specifically to help prepare for this? As of now my only known responsibilities are:

- Maybe plan a bachelor party? We are spending a week in the amazon prior to the wedding week just the two of us and our youngest brother, so that will fill part of the pre-wedding celebrations roll. After talking with the groom he's not requiring an actual bachelor party night out but is open to ideas so at this point its just a maybe. I feel like this is typically the main responsibility of a best man but I have no need to push for it if it doesn't fit with the vibe of the wedding, tradition, schedule etc. Are similar bachelor parties normal in Ecuador?

- Give a toast/speech. I was already planning on this whether I was best man or not given I am the older brother. I plan on writing a speech in both English and Spanish for the bride's family. I know the bride's family are very traditional but my brother and the bride definitely are not. Any tips on giving a speech in Spanish to a bunch of Ecuadorians? Also my Spanish is very limited but I have two months to freshen up on it and get a speech written.

-General damage control/main man/fixer of all problems.

About the Bride/Groom: I believe she works as a gallery curator and runs some children's programs for/with a museum or something along those lines. He is a freelance investigative journalist. Both are very modern hip intellectuals but down to earth. Both our families our well travelled and culturally experienced if this means anything at all. He's 29 and she's 33 I think.

Info on the wedding: They are not having a huge traditional wedding. He said the ceremony will be standing room only and last about ten minutes, followed by dinner, reception (toasts) , then lots of whiskey drinking and shenanigans. There will be a dj/mc then a banda de pueblo to close the night. I think it will be 100 people max. He hasn't disclosed the location to me or my family as he wants it to be a surprise for our family. This doesn't help lol.

Any tips or general advice is much appreciated!
