LPT: If you have to go to the DMV, try doing it on Halloween. Not only will the lines be shorter because of the holiday, but you'll see the weirdest sights ever...

Just last year, I got my licence for the first time and, wouldn't you know it, my road test was on Halloween. I thought it was a bit of a bummer at first, but the next available date would have been December, so the choice was obvious: sooner rather than later.

The road test goes fine, and I pass, and then me and my instructor go to the DMV to finish up everything. She remarks that due to the fact that it was before everyone had gotten out of work and Halloween, the lines would be shorter than ever.

I walk into the DMV to see the grim reaper in line, along with a woman fully decked out in a gothic outfit, top hat and all, waiting patiently as ever as a silver skull glowed green on her belt buckle, and with Superman taking his driver's licence photo.

We were done in ~30 minutes, and on top of that it turned what could have been a hellish experience into entertainment for me

On Halloween, it’s more difficult to tell who’s dressed up and who’s not.

> you'll see the weirdest sights ever

It's the DMV, that applies to every day man.

I used to dread going to the DMV but frankly it's really not that bad. . .And I grew up in an area of NY where the DMV was really poorly run and always had terrible lines. Anytime I needed to go to the DMV I would just time my day to get there right as they were opening up. . Sure still a lot of people but way less than any other time of the day and you'd be in and out within 45 minutes. I also go in knowing that I will probably be there for awhile, which means I'm far less stressed when I have to wait a little bit - The DMV was also a much shittier experience before cellphones with 3D games and internet.

I assume DMV is an American thing but what is it?

"Department of Motor Vehicles," it's usually to renew your driver's license for the most part. It's known for being especially horrible when it comes to waiting in line

level 3

How often do you have to renew it? I'm in the UK we just stick our licences in the post with a new photo when it is time to be updated every 10 years (I think).

I think we renew it every 4 years. Like I've said, I'm fairly new to the whole licence thing

I did go to the DMV on Halloween this past year and it was really funny. Everyone was dressed in elaborate, whimsical costumes but still all equally miserable and unpleasant as they always are. The meanest fairy princess I’ve ever met took my picture.

Yes, wait months and months to address that thing that affects how you get anywhere in the US.

Or just go to the DMV before your licence expires, but on Halloween

level 3

Most places I have lived will not renew more than 30 days before expiration.

Oh, huh. Wasn't aware of that honestly. As mentioned, I'm pretty new to the whole "licence" thing so that's news to me
