LPT: Try going an entire day while strictly adhering to the rule of, “If you have nothing nice to say, don’t say anything at all.” If you’re successful, you will have gone the whole day only adding positivity to the world around you.

level 1

Or a whole day not saying anything at all, so equal positivity.

level 2

I did that. The first day nobody noticed. After a couple of days some people thought something was wrong. I finally broke my silence to assure a few of them that nothing was wrong and explain what I was doing, then went mostly silent again. After a while I got my work done in more peace and when I did have something to say everyone shut up to listened like I was some sage or something. But that was several years ago. It's very hard to keep up that lifestyle and still have friends.

level 3

Yeah I can picture people thinking the person who isn't taking is being stuck up or literally can't find anything nice to say about those around them

level 3

Very well put

level 2

Perfectly balanced

level 3

Like all things should be

This is pretty much what happens when I try to do this on Mondays.

Ruining someone's day without speaking? Challenge accepted

level 2

Just channel a cat and swipe things off their desk onto the floor

level 1

That sounds great, until you consider the paradox of tolerance.

level 2

This is a very good point. I think when someone abuses your passive positivity in order to spread intolerance it is still the optimist’s duty to step up and say something!

level 1

What if I want to be a jerk since it adds to my small menial life?

I do this.

I haven't spoken in four years.

level 1

Thanks! I'm going to try this at work: "Hey, Jen... you have a nice rack. I've always admired that about you."

level 2

"Thanks Gary! As I was telling HR, you've always been very direct and honest with your sexual harassment!"

level 1

I do this naturally. I’m a rather quiet person as a result..

level 1

I do...

I just put all the negativity on me instead.

level 1

Sometimes more positivity is added in the long term by saying something that's unpleasant to hear in the short term.

level 1

I try to live life this way.

level 1

I already do this lol, and I must say, it feels great

level 1

Tried this for years, worsened my depression. Mainly because I kept burying my opinions.

level 1

And yet, i feel my silence is like a black plague, slowly creeping outward in to the world around me.

level 1

Pulling the duct tape off my mouth at night is gonna hurt though...

level 1

Hello darkness, my old friend...

level 1

I'd like to think that adherence to this rule is why I'm so quiet.

level 1

Bitch I work in customer service. This is how I live.

level 1

Bring on the stomach ulcers

level 1

1 day positivity, 23 years of negativity. It'll balance out, right guys? guys?

Yes, eventually.

Similarly, in the Netherlands we have a saying "If you've got nothing to do, go do it not here" for that annoying coworker who stopped by your desk and just babbles on and on about inconsequential things.

level 1

What if a co-worker said something bad about you but you don't want to ask them why did they say that so you went to another co-worker and ask them (advise/third party opinion so that you can change or probably improve yourself if the issue lies with you) if there is anything wrong you did that made that co-worker said that? Does that count as "nothing-nice"? Since people might say that it is akin to "talking-bad" (at their back) about somebody or even "gossiping"...

This happens to me recently so I would like to know what to do if something like this happens again (e.g. should I walk away and treat it as nothing has happened which can seek to "storing negative forces inside oneself" or should I seek third party's advice in seeking for possible underlying issue which may or may not lead to improvement)

level 1

Fuck you OP. Fuck, now I gotta start over.

level 1

I do this every day at work and all that's happened is my co-workers don't seem to like because I won't join in with the bitching of others.

level 1

And then you can look around at all the good it did. Squat all.

If you don't agree with me then you must admit you're not following your own advice when you downvote. If I felt my skeptical attitude would in any way result in the world being a worse place I wouldn't make it. The world doesn't work like that. Every problem you don't have, you don't have because someone got their hands dirty.

level 1

Are you saying that people shouldn't oppose anything?

level 1

What if you like steal or commit crime that day though?

Ah interesting, I suppose I was operating under the assumption that you don’t do those things haha

level 3

Still, definitely a great LPT

I honestly think that, as an American - Americans couldn't handle that. Especially online.

Fuck, I am breaking that rule right now!
