Custom flairs: here are two ways to obtain a custom flair:

  • place and lose a flair bet in the Friday thread
  • draw a MS Paint-style image for the sub

The rules for the drawing are simply that it must be a ridiculous MMA-related scenario. If you would like a custom flair, send a message to us with a link to your drawing and your flair request. We'll probably grant it.

Interested in modding? Please fill out the mod application found here. Do not leave a comment about this in the thread. You can send us modmail if you have questions.

The article is in Portuguese:

https://sportv.globo.com/site/combate/noticia/lutador-fica-apagado-por-quase-2min-em-luta-pior-experiencia-da-minha-vida.ghtml

Kind of a rough read due to the subject matter and Chrome translation (any native speakers want to take a stab at it?), but man, what a mess of finger-pointing.

No clue what the truth of the conflicting claims is, but the gist of it seems to be: It's being claimed that the promoter underpaid the CNMMA (the organization providing the referees), so when an experienced referee (who may also have been the CNMMA official responsible for the event? not 100% sure) dropped out at the last minute, an unpaid replacement was provided. Supposedly, the promoter objected, but was assured the guy was qualified, etc.

On the bright side, the "referee" said he will never try to ref MMA again...

...

Edit: Higher quality summary from u/samuraipickle below that really should be higher up:

"The jist of it is that it's a bit of a shitshow and they're each trying to blame someone else.

The guy who was supposed to ref the event was the president of CNMMA; CNMMA roughly translates to "national MMA confederation" however it is not the only one nor the main federation of MMA in Brazil.

The president however had health issues and couldn't do it, so he supposedly appointed the guy who was reffing there. The president of the "Demolidor Fight" organisation putting on the card claims he knew this ref and didn't want him reffing his event because he was incompetent. He also claims the CNMMA president assured him this guy was licensed by his federation and was a good, trustworthy ref, which led him to allowing this ref to work the event.

Then there are also claims by the president of CNMMA that he was underpaid so he couldn't bring a crew from another state to work the event because they weren't paid enough by the promotion to do that.

The actual referee who let this happen is a BJJ black belt, BJJ coach and has reffed other small events. He's apologised for his mistake and said he's glad the fighter is okay. He said during the fight he saw the fighter had his eyes open and looked to be okay, had his hands on his opponents abs and was pushing to create pressure to escape and when he saw his legs move he thought he was hip-escaping. He said watching the video he recognises his mistake but at the time thought the guy was trying to survive and wasn't out. He also said he looked over at the fighter's corner and they hadn't noticed he was out either despite having clear view of what was happening.

The corner on the other hand says they never thought about throwing the towel because they claim they asked the ref if the fighter was out and he said no. They also say they didn't have a clear view of what was happening.

Basically the closest one to accepting their mistake and the blame here is the referee. Everyone else is just pointing fingers at someone else."

Which pure BJJ player or wrestler managed to develop a competent or even good level of striking and which striker managed to cultivate a nasty ground game?

I think Chad Mendes is a good example of a heavily wrestling orientated fighter managing to work on getting his stand up to a strong level where he could hang with the likes of Aldo or McGregor on the feet for the most part. GSP had primarily a karate background yet is known for his incredible grappling. Who else springs to mind?
