Shreddit's Top Albums of the 1970s

Before Voting Please Read the following Terms of Service Agreement.

Greetings! You guys wanted it. Now here it is. This is our official vote for the best albums of the 1970s which is intended to serve as a tool for people to find good music. It is also our finale for the decade lists which started with the 00's, continued with the 90's and 80's and now is being put put out to pasture. This will work out very similar to previous lists where albums will be presented in batches according to their popularity rather than specific numerical tiering.

How To Vote

Respond with a list of 30 albums in the format of Artist - Album with either bullet points or just spaces. It is important I be able to grab it and add it to the list and run it through a duplicate counter to get the data so Black Sabbath - Master of Reality needs to look similar to the other Black Sabbath - Master of Reality and not have a year or the album first or just "SWEEEET LEAFFF"

Let us take a look at /u/deathofthesun list for everyone to see how to format.

  • Black Sabbath - Vol. 4

  • Motörhead - Overkill

  • Judas Priest - Sad Wings of Destiny

  • Rainbow - Rising

  • UFO - Phenomenon

  • Blue Oyster Cult - Tyranny and Mutation

  • Legend - From the Fjords

  • Scorpions - Taken By Force

  • Randy Holden - Population II

  • Thin Lizzy - Bad Reputation

  • Riot - Rock City

  • Blues Creation - Demon and Eleven Children

  • Quartz - Quartz

  • Deep Purple - Machine Head

  • Sorcery - Stunt Rock

  • The Hand of Doom - Poisonoise

  • Bang - Bang

  • Buffalo - Volcanic Rock

  • Night Sun - Mournin'

  • Survivor - All Your Pretty Moves

  • Nokemono - From the Black World

  • Heavy Load - Full Speed at High Level

  • Flower Travellin' Band - Satori

  • Sorcery - Sinister Soldiers

  • Dust - Dust

  • Yesterday and Today - Yesterday and Today

  • Saxon - Saxon

  • Sir Lord Baltimore - Kingdom Come

  • Impeccable - On the Rox

  • Murasaki - Mursaki

You see that? Self titled records are written out. No Year. No funny business? If it is in some type of order, you can make mention of it in your post but not your list. That is what I need. Don't be unique in your formatting. With three or 5 records I can usually take the time to reformat it to run through the machine but there is no way I am reformatting 30 albums because you decided to write the date longhanded. Now If you can handle that, let us get to it.

Special Note: The 1970's were more loose in terms of things like "heavy metal" genres and smoking indoors. For this list expect a certain amount of prog, hard rock, and psych to stain the walls.

☒ I acknowledge that I have read and agree to the above Terms and Conditions.

  • Pentagram – First Daze

  • Heavy Load – Full Speed At High Level

  • Sorcery – Sinister Soldiers

Some remarks: Other than Granmax, all my picks are on Metal Archives. I limited myself to only three albums per band. Some picks seemed almost arbitrary; I chose Rainbow and Thin Lizzy albums which had less ballads or bluesy rock. Finally, honorable mentions to Quartz, Budgie, Flower Travelin' Band, the other Sorcery, Scorpions...

Quartz - Quartz

Sir Lord Baltimore - Kingdom Come

Flower Travellin' Band - Satori

Dust - Dust

Definetly one of the harder lists to make. My list is in no particular order, limited to one album per band. The Bedemon, Pagan altar and Pentagram releases on the list while released much later were all 70s material so i think it counts. Also tried to limit myself to as many bands that are inlucded in the Metal Archives

Honourable mentions: Budgie, Armageddon, Thin Lizzy, Marseille

The Hand of Doom - Poisonoise

Such a great one, this. Very few mentions of it on this vote :(

Agreed it's such a good album. But they are fairly underground and probably overlooked in favor of other german trad/hard rock like scorpions

No particular order. A lot of it is kinda on the fringe of what is metal, but I think it's ok.

I really wanted to put Jacula - Tardo Pede In Magiam Versus but that would be pushing it and their first album was in the 60's so oh well.

Murasaki- Murasaki

Haven't listened to this album. Are they like Flower travellin band, Bow Wow, Nokemono? IF so should be an easy listen for me.

Also if you had to have one judas priest and one sabbath album which would they be?

level 3
Full High at Speed Level3 points · 9 months ago

They are similar to Bow Wow and Nokemono. FTB... not as much.

I dont know man. Thats why I listed 3 and 2. Mayyybe Stained Class and Master of Reality but its wayy too hard to choose

IDK why I just find Lord Baltimore to be very meh, never quite clicked with them or Captain Beyond and I have a pretty high tolerance for the self indulgence of that decade.

Not a big Rush fan ?

I've restricted this list to full-lengths only, since there are many bands who released demos / EPs / singles in the 70s, but only produced full albums in the 80s. Furthermore, there are a number of bands whose 70s material was only released to the public much later, so I'm not sure if they count in a list such as this. For example:

  • Pentagram - Human Hurricane

  • Pentagram - First Daze Here

  • Bedemon - Child of Darkness

  • Iron Claw - A Different Game

All of these albums were only available as demos or rehearsal tapes in the 70s. I'm not sure if they count, if this list is aiming to compile music made in the 70s or music officially released in the 70s. If it's the former, please consider these as votes.

Buffalo are large members of the Bovidae family. There are two types of buffalo: the African or Cape buffalo and the Asian water buffalo. They are dark gray or black animals that look a lot like bulls. They are often confused with bison

Not in any order at all considering I think all albums are really influential to the genre. It would be to hard to rank all these great bands. In particular in the list Black Sabbath would have to be my pick for the favorite artist, gotta love Sabbath. I also really enjoy King Crimson, Pentagram, Motorhead , and Judas Priest to be my favorite bands on the list.

Also included Resurrection Band cause I knew noone else would. Despite how ridiculously influential they were, they get no love outside the tiny and weird world of Christian metal.

Not bringing much new to the vote here. I've only got 21 heavy metal/proto-metal/heavy psych/heavy prog/hard rock albums that I can think of. I would only consider about a third of these to be my "Top Albums of the 1970s."

I only mentioned albums I've heard and love. I could have tossed in more Rush and Yes. If multiples are allowed....

Yes - Fragile

Yes - Relayer

Damn that sucks. I agree that they aren't even a bit metal but so many prog metal bands are heavily influenced by their sound it seems a shame to overlook them.

I don't really know this decade well enough to do the full number. There are plenty of albums that I've only heard once or twice and can't legitimately claim them as favourites of the decade.

level 2
Trad Masterrace1 point · 9 months ago

That decade was pretty stacked, almost every big band released their best work duing the decade. Judas Priest had a string of GOAT albums consecutively, that can go toe to toe against anything heavy metal has to offer just in the last few years of the decade.

A reminder that the decade "the 1970's" goes from 1971 to 1980.

The 1970s (pronounced "nineteen-seventies", commonly abbreviated as the "Seventies") was a decade of the Gregorian calendar that began on January 1, 1970, and ended on December 31, 1979.

Incorrect. We don’t measure time in spans of zero to nine. We measure in spans of one to ten.

There is no year zero C.E. It starts at one. The last year of the first decade was year ten.

thats fine and your most certainly right but for this we are counting the years 1970-1979 since we already did 1980 in the other list.
