Past month ive deleted all social media except reddit and unfollowed r/news and as someone with chroni mc dpression i have felt more alive and happier with myself and the world around me
I recently deleted Twitter and it’s such a weight off. I mainly follow cute animal subreddits
Mc Depression sounds like it could be a sick dj, or a really lousy burger.
But in all seriousness this is the best way to go. Facebook is seriously toxic, I got rid of it a couple years ago and found myself a lot better off. Don't miss it one bit.
You probably should'nt be completely out of the loop but it probably helps if you are not reminded of how shit the world is everyday
The world only seems so bad because we are able to see every bad thing that happens globally within an instant. The world as a whole is better for humanity than it has ever been before.
There is nothing in the news that I need to know, because there is nothing in the news I can do anything about.
If anything truly life changing happens, I'll hear about it from friends family and co workers.
The only thing I have control over is local elections.
Don't buy the propaganda that you need to be well informed "if you don't read the news you are uninformed. If you do read the news you are misinformed" - Mark Twain.
Unplug. It's just people trying to sell you things. You don't need to give it your attention
Love that Twain quote, thank you.
What if there was something that you could apply for instance there is a movement about protecting the internet , and they need people to call the senators and say your piece. A democracy can only run when people stay informed whether that is through news or your own research ( which you can completely do even if you don’t watch the news).
P.S social media is not that important same cannot be said for the news
Didn't net neutrality bypass all public or congressional vote?
I'm not saying it's best to be uninformed. I'm saying that news is propaganda, with a powerful bias towards the people paying for the news to be made.
If you really want to subject yourself to news, watch both sides. If you read CNN or NYT, watch Fox News, otherwise you're drinking the cool aid
I do believe only a senate vote can pull it back not to sure I am in Canada so..
I agree to your final point or you don’t really have to watch the news , just get the topics and do research thoroughly and also watch both sides that can give you a better perspective on things. The impression your post gave me was that you had stopped watching all news sorry if that’s not the case
I have stopped watching the news. My life has 99 problems but other people's problems isn't one.
I'll read up on science news and literature, but that's because I'm interested.
World news, national news, Facebook feed and Reddit /top material is just crammed full of fear uncertainty and doubt. It's all about getting people emotional and angry.
No thank you. My daily life consists of many problems that are far removed from what the news talks about. If governmental overreach happens, the news won't fix that either, so what's the point?
There is no need to be so negative how about take both sides. Subscribe to news and also subscribe to aww pictures too.
I've stopped watching. Is there another step that I missed
I used to watch the news (Australia) I went from fascinated to interested to meh to yelling “you fucking idiot” at every second story. News over here is mostly crap. Hard to get the truth.
Apathy is less painful but still a dangerous road.
A few years ago I began working on an inland cruise ship. No TV, no radio and no newspapers (the last two were optional but a total pain to access). I had never been happier in my life! I may have been ignorant to the awful things happening in the world but I was so much happier in my own existence.
Except the news is PewNews
I stopped watching tv in general. And social media.
Why should I focus my energy on things other people do? Instead of putting energy in things I want to do.
Because what some other people do could affect your life
99.99 percent on tv and social media doesn't affect you directly. And even if it did you probably can't change anything about it.
One person cannot build a house, it is a group working together and communicating that builds a house if you want to stay ignorant to other life reaching issues you might as well choose to be slave. Everything in life can also be explained by that last sentence. I am not saying you should al of sudden be a politician but a responsible adult should always know what happens regardless of whether u have the power to change it or not depends on yourself. If u do want to change find like minded people and inform others in your community.
You read my comment as nihilistic.
I am far from it.
News and television is just not reality. And you and many people overestimate the importance and significance of news and television.
Just think about how much actually affects ypu or has anything to do with you when watching the news.
It is just entertainment. Not important information or knowledge you should acquire.
It is mostly just buzz to give you the illusion about being informed.
You want to know something about the world. Study things in depth. Go to school read books. But news and television will get you nowhere.
I dont want to know about what is in the world but what is happening right now. Trumps trade tariffs could hurt jobs in the US. There is no such thing as an illusion of being informed “The ignorance of one votes impairs the security of all” John f Kennedy. Stay connceted and don’t feel depressed that you can’t do anything. Stay focused and in the know for when the opurtuniry comes for you to do something to change.
But do you actually have knowledge how and why trumps trade decisions would affect the economy?
I don't. I haven't studied economics.
So what good does it do for me knowing that?
So you seen some expert who you believe tell you it could hurt jobs. Great. And what of it?
Are you going to change your life because of this? No you just go about your bussiness.
You can apply that to literally anything - science, art, politics etc. Why learn about anything by that logic?
My point is that you don't learn anything because it are superficial bits of information.
It is simplified.
Not really- it's history in real time. And those who don't learn history are doomed to repeat it right? I'm not saying check the news everyday but I think it's very important to have awareness of current events.
Key to ignorance maybe
Ignorance is bliss
It really is
I personally don't think you are gonna get anything useful from watching the mainstream media...
What's the point in hearing about things you cannot change? There is no ignorance in avoiding negativity if you can't fix it either way
That kind of attitude is the reason things don’t change, you absolutely can change it, get out, protest, rally, contact your representatives your senator your sheriff, you can make a difference you just don’t want to do the work
The news cherry picks negative things. No matter how good it gets (life is pretty good, compared to any time in the past for most metrics), you will still be bombarded with the worst of it
Or alternatively, watch the news and thank God you're not as dumb as the people that make it on the news
I have not watched any news for the last ten years or so. Got any other suggestions?
If you can't change it, no reason to pay attention to it
I have no idea how to feel about this because I can personally relate, removing yourself from news and politics leads to a happier and less stressful day, but also ignorance of the world and it’s current problems.
Not sure if there’s a good middle ground, like weekly news catchups?
The media/news is nothing but crap.. Unfortunate that people still think they speak the truth..
Ignorance is bliss but I’m pretty sure that’s not the whole saying.
Fuck Trump vote Beto
Hence the phrase "ignorance is bliss"
Watch the food channel
I watched the news last night for the first time in a long time. Realised even more so after watching how blessed I was to live the life that I do and how I been taking it for granted when others are truly suffering.
Amen to this!!
I call this blissful ignorance.
I don't watch the news, still not happy. Suck it
It helps but there are certain social needs i find vital
reddit is all you need
Some would call not watching news ignorant bliss, but the news itself is so fucking ignorant , so yes, not watching is bliss
No true, I never watch the news and my life still sucks 🌚
Very true. CNN= center negative news
and reading positive books
I agree to certain extent. So many bad things happening daily. Can be depressing to watch.
If happiness is willful ignorance of what's going on around you, then yes since ignorance is bliss. Sometimes I think that this a contributing factor to why we have the news we have. We have become so self absorbed, we've become apathetic to the world (and those that govern us) until it directly affects us.
Might help some, but I doubt it is the key
Yes, because most of the things that we hear in the news are negative.
keep your ducks in a row with everything you do!
Can't hurt and may help.
yes the news is designed to bring you bad news only.how can bad news make u happy during the day
For sure! I prefer the news in the novel Michael O'Halloran by Gene Stratton Porter. The newsy only shouted out hppy headlines.
Turn off the TV completely
That would be a huge step
Well, it's wise to at least stay updated on important daily news that affects you in any way, for safety and peace of mind's sake for yourself and loved ones...because knowledge is in fact powerful and critical in order to help preserve and promote happiness and to help prevent mishaps that may chip away at you and your family's efforts to stay happy.
'A' key perhaps. I do know people whom seem most happy when they are not happy. Or at least it seems that way!!
The key to happiness has nothing to do with not watching the news. You have to personally make yourself be happy.
I don’t watch television at all 💁🏼
Considering most news is no longer real news.
I don't know, that seems more like the key to not knowing what's going on.
Trust me, you'll still hear about the actual important stuff. Everyone at work will still talk about it, but you avoid all the stuff that gets retracted because they wanted to be the "first to report" it instead of the most accurate. Also, you dont get bothered with news stories that are equivalent to clickbait (e.g. "5 household items that can kill you." Then they tell you not to eat tide pods).
Or care about people more than your pets please and thank you.
Why? Our dog is a part of our family. I'll never pick a rando over family.
Look, at least get a human pet to earn you money.
