Reactions at the time

I haven’t really found anything online from that time period but how were general reactions to The Rock and Stone Cold at their heights? Did people at the time think that these two were going to be among the greatest of all time or was the general consensus more chill like yeah they’re pretty cool?

I more so mean online than in public.

Do you mean online ? Austin and Rock were gigantic stars with pop culture penetration. They were hugely over. Austin turning heel had a negatic impact on the wrestling business he was so liked.

If you mean by smarks online they were both really liked in general. Austin more so because he was a better wrestler. Its hard to say how people view these megastars in their time but people were aware how good business was and how popular rock and austin were. Like you would have had to have been blind not to see they were quite special

Austin was universally loved during his hot period.

People loved Rock but there was a bit of a backlash toward him, especially in 2002 when it became clear he was trending toward a bigger career in Hollywood.

Triple H was called overrated in 1999 and became an internet darling in 2000 until his injury in 2001, then became hated again in 2002.

Honestly, I think even at the time people recognized that they were two of the greatest of all-time, especially by around 2000. There's a reason why the Rock vs. Hogan match at Wrestlemania 18 in 2002 was dubbed Icon vs. Icon.

No one was thinking about legacy or greatest of all time. Look I was around for the mega boom and watched everything I could, no one was talking about that kind of stuff. That wasn't a thing.
