Hey /r/Apple!

In an attempt to curb the number of threads about pre-order choices/configurations, shipping statuses, etc, we are asking that all discussion about it remain in here. We are setting the sort of this thread to new so that users receive the latest updates at the top of the thread when they open the comments.

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: The daily support thread won’t be stickied for the next few days. I need this sticky spot for the pre-order megathreads and the OS updates on Monday. I urge you to use Discord for help (you don’t need to make an account to chat on a desktop browser) and/or IRC. If you issue is really simple, iMessage Apple. How? On Apple Maps, search Apple Store. Tap any store and scroll down and tap the Messages icon. Sorry about the inconvenience.

Also note, pre-orders for the iPhone XR will start on October 19th. There will be a megathread for the XR next month.

  1. Favorite your phone right now on the Apple Store app for iOS. Specially if you are joining the iPhone Upgrade Program for the first time. Seriously. Here is how you can favorite an iPhone. When you favorite an item, the configuration you want will be available to add to the bag and purchase. Stop reading this post to the end and go do that now.

  2. Force close the website/app a few minutes before the store opens to avoid any potential issues.

  3. Tell your bank that you are making a big purchase tonight. You don't want to be one of the first people to pre-order and then have your bank declined the transaction, and then receive your phone on 2019.

Inbox replies will be disabled because I don't want my phone to buzz at me more than 20k times ಥ_ಥ

But if you need me to add info or something, PM me, or tag me. I will be online all evening.

Seriously though, I feel like this is a design change that’s going to take a month or two to break the habit of.

Has anyone else had trouble adjusting to this change or has it been pretty seemless of a transition for you?

When iOS 12 came out I limited my 7-year old son’s screen time through the family share. For a few days I felt like he was playing a bit more than he should, but I couldn’t figure out why.

Finally today, my son revealed his hack: When he runs out of screen time and his games get locked, he heads to App Store, downloads a previously installed (but later removed) game through the cloud icon, and it works without limitations! What can I say.. I’m not even mad. That’s impressive.

The new in-call Facetime Video interface is so horrible and requires multiple taps to perform simple tasks. This is so un-Apple like! 1) Flip camera switch is hidden under the settings 2) Speaker/ Bluetooth volume control is multiple steps now 3) I can’t see the other person when i am doing any of these actions or in the new filters menu. 4) Live Camera is hidden too!

Please give us back the old interface. That just works.

Seriously. WHY hasn't this been fixed? Searching for multiple instances of a specific phrase you've said often in a specific context you remember is virtually futile.

So frustrating

Every single phone I’ve ever had, all I cared about was the percentage and the little picture was just something extra. When people look at their phone battery, they check for the percentage to gauge how much is left.

I get there’s not enough room to include both because of the notch, but allowing us to select the picture or percentage should’ve been an easy alternative.

I’m a severe weather / travel / candid photographer who spent a couple of years in the late 2000s focusing on shooting HDR professionally (real HDR utilizing 12+ photos taken at 1 stop intervals, meticulously blended in Photoshop, not the fake acid-trip-looking stuff). I just shot a random off the hip shot in a coffee shop and... I honestly don’t know how the phone is accomplishing this on the fly. There is probably a solid 5 stop difference between the shadows and the highlights, but the phone is capturing detail in all of it, and blending it in a natural way. This is very impressive. Doing this with a DSLR would require a tripod, a very still subject, and probably 5 to 10 minutes in Photoshop. My only complaint is that it’s a bit saturated straight out of the camera with no adjustments, this is pretty easily fixed. It’s crazy to get this kind of quality out of something that slides into your pocket.

I’m sure it’s been spoken about before here, probably as nauseum at that. But I have my first X series phone (Xs) and I seriously cant stop playing with the create a Memoji feature.

This means that iPhones shouldn't be under a stream of water. The pressure gets through and kills the device.

Okay play some music to start, then head to settings, scroll down to music, tap EQ, then select Late Night, tell me your phone isn’t SIGNIFICANTLY louder and boomin’

I’ve already bought Apollo, and it’s so good. What are some other must have apps?

I have an 8 Plus, by the way. Loving it so far!

Has anyone else noticed the sheer dislike of Apple shared by Lew on his channel Unbox Therapy, without fully understanding what he is talking about?

I get that there are negatives to every product and company. But not all of them get addressed in a click bait style nature as well as the “Father of Bendgate.”

Take his latest hit job for example, a video regarding batteries in phones. Lew is complaining and insinuating Apple are not being transparent enough with their phones by detailing the capacity of the battery, and instead are accused of giving consumers “less information” by stating how much usage you get from talk time, and comparing the battery life to other iPhone models.

But surely, this is the better way to do it? Because a higher battery capacity does not necessarily translate to longer battery life. Other factors such as how much power is consumed by the remaining hardware needs to be taken into account.

Therefore, the best way to compare for consumers, is to look at how the battery performs, such as talk time, browsing time, music time etc.

If you go by battery capacity, it becomes the game of manufacturers who know the higher the number is on the spec sheet, the more a consumer will be drawn to their product, even though it doesn’t lead to a better experience.

Now, I’ve always liked Lew’s videos, and he is a popular YouTuber and is very successful. But with his status, he also has the responsibility to report accurate information, and do what is best for the viewer, which is also a consumer, and not necessarily a tech savvy person who knows about battery capacity.

Surely he knows from the consumers point of view in this scenario, reporting the talk time, browsing time etc is the best way for a consumer to judge which product is correct for them?

I think Lew needs to take his work more seriously, and deal with actual issues in the market, and not bash a particular company and throw his toys out of the pram because he doesn’t get invited to keynotes.

Too often, I play a video and have to swipe control center in, blocking the video, to disable screen rotation lock, only to have to re-enable it again later or forget to and be annoyed having to do it from my horizontal home screen (which I never use).

It’d be really great if they put one on the video player controls, right in this empty space, that could even be temporary for that particular video.

I’ll send this feedback to Apple as well, but wondering if this makes any sense or if I’m missing why this shouldn’t be or any other details I should include in my feedback message.

My skin on the front camera looks as if I applied a real time filter to smooth out my imperfections..... I hate it.

Is anyone else having this issue.

Having to try to remember all of your passwords for your apps.

Who else agrees?

David Heinemeier Hansson, the creator of the Ruby on Rails framework tweeted this earlier. It's crazy how incredibly fast A12 bionic is. Not sure how this specific benchmark works, but iPhone XS ate its competition for breakfast there.

Last time I’ve read, this feature is only available on iPhone 8 and above due to buffer size (?), now it’s available on my iPhone 7 too on iOS 12. So subtle but meaningful.

This is honestly laughable. I wish we had something like Facebook lite. I use Facebook as we circulate a lot of notes and work via a large group and it makes it easy to browse and download files. App sizes are super inflated on iOS. Is there any alternative?

Pretty crazy but video comes out to almost the same size on the XS Max vs iPad mini.

I woke up this morning for work and quickly checked the shipping status for my XS Max. ‘SHIPPING STATUS: DELAYED, SORTING ERROR’. My phone had been shipped to the wrong local sorting office for my courier. They were useless on the phone, the wrong sorting office was about 60 miles away but due to the way they work, they would have to send the package back to the other end of the country and sort it again. I offered to pop over to the sorting facility and pick it up, nothing wrong with a Friday afternoon road trip... can’t do that either, against policy. I give Apple a call to see if there were any iPhones at my local store. They told me they have a ‘Plan B’ in place for this exact scenario. From what I gather Apple has booked out tons of same day courier resources to fix any of these issues. In 2 hours a same day courier was dispatched to grab my phone from the old couriers sorting facility and zipped over to me. When talking on the phone with the Apple rep I said that it really wasn’t going to be a big deal if the phone showed up tomorrow, but they said ‘you obviously put in an effort to make sure you got one of our devices on launch day, the least we can do is do right by you and get your device to you on time.’ Blown away.

TLDR: courier messed up my iPhone delivery, apple had a plan B that involved dedicated same day couriers from another company to fix it.

I got my XS Max on Friday and have been noticing a weird charging habit on it.

In these two days my phone died two times on me, the battery hit 0%. Then I started to charge it with the lightning cable and the iPad charger. The phone turned on again but in both cases it shows 8%, then less, like 6%, then 4% and then the numbers go up. Is this normal or is my battery not okay? I remember that my 7 Plus started at 2% when it died but never at a higher percentage, which then gets lower before its charging.

I’m seeing the ApplePay button showing (but disabled) in messages on my S4 watch, but I’m in Australia. Nothing related has changed in the Messages, Wallet or Settings apps on my iPhone X. Has anyone seen/heard about this finally leaving US shores?
