Any number of tigers chasing me that is greater than zero is nightmare fuel.

level 3

terrifyingly cute

level 4

AAAHHHHHHHHdorable

level 3

They're just extra big puddy cats

level 4

Go pet one...

level 4

You'd be pudding though.

level 5

They're fascinating yet simultaneously petrifying

level 4

That's what scares me.

level 4

They'll puddy the f out of me and eat me... But yes, they are kinda cute... From a distance.

level 4

regular sized cats scare me already, just petting them can turn from purring enjoyment to scratches and bites of death when the pets given cease to be amusing for the cat overlord.

What about 0.2

level 3

What if it was a tiger kitten?

level 4

It depends. How old are we talking? Back when my cat was a kitten his claws were far more scary than his teeth. But at least he couldn't eat me if he wanted to.

level 5

About house cat size. I don’t really know how small they are when they are born but I’m pretty sure it’s smaller than that.

level 6

Yea but they’re like mike Tyson house cats as babies. Yeah they’re the same length except they’re paws are still the size of a mans hands and their head is like a soccer ball.

level 3

If you think about it, at all times somewhere behind you is a tiger. It may be ten feet or ten thousand miles away, but there's always one back behind you.

level 2

That’s their... eager face.

Some of them are just being playful. You can tell by the way their tails are raised with a hook on the end.

They look just like my cats chasing a laser

Was anyone else expecting / hoping that they caught the drone?

level 2

Pretty sure I've seen them catch it in this footage but longer.

level 2

Watching this caused me stress just for this reason.

level 2

They do.

I don't know why this clip doesn't include it but one of them absolutely swats it out of the air and they end up destroying it.

Hey guys, you should all probably know that this is from a tiger farm. These tigers are gonna end up as "medicine" ingredients, if they haven't already.

level 2

In Australia they explained that croc farms are there to reduce the price of these products and discourage poaching of wild crocs. I assume these tiger farms serve the same purpose. As long as there is demand for these things, animals will die whether it’s wild ones or farmed ones.

If there were white rhino farms then they wouldn’t be extinct

level 5

Except that white rhinos won't breed in captivity so there is that.

level 6

They would have bred in captivity if there was a larger population but there was only 3 of them left when they tried

level 4

But how do you prove it's farmed vs wild?

level 5

Ding ding ding! This is why poaching has increased almost every time a government legalizes trade in captive-bred wildlife. It's really easy for a poacher to pass off his illegally-obtained tiger skin as a legal specimen.

level 4

citations please.

level 5

Thank god someone asked

level 3

Unfortunately, that's not how it works. In fact, the poaching of wild tigers has increased across Asia since "farming" tigers in captivity was made legal. The same phenomenon has happened with other wildlife species, too. In 2008, CITES decided to allow a one-time, legal sale of 108 metric tons of stockpiled ivory to China, with the idea that flooding the Asian market with legal ivory would knock black-market poachers out of business. But the sale had the opposite effect: after the announcement, illegal ivory production shot up by over 60%, and the sale is often blamed as one of the factors that sparked the current elephant poaching crisis. And since South Africa legalized the international trade in captive-bred lion bones and trophies, park rangers have been finding the mutilated carcasses of poached wild lions much more frequently. There wasn't even a market for lion parts in Asia before 2007, when the lion farms were established.

It's thought that there are several reasons for this:

First of all, any government approval of the sale of wildlife products, regardless of origin, signals that these products have value, increasing demand.

Secondly, legal markets provide traffickers with an easy way to launder illegally-poached wildlife as legal specimens. Paperwork can be forged, officials can be bribed, etc.

Finally, many consumers of wildlife products believe that products derived from captive animals are inferior to those from wild animals, either as a medical/spiritual remedy or as a status symbol. If you're rich, you flaunt diamonds, not cubic zirconia. So a glut of legal, captive-bred tiger skins only increases the value and demand for "authentic", poached products. This is why the majority of reputable conservation groups (WWF, Panthera, etc.) advocate for complete bans on all wildlife products, captive-origin or not. Zero tolerance is the only thing that's worked.

level 4

I'm so sad this doesn't have more up votes.

level 3

The most successful mammals on the planet are humans... and mammals that are useful to humans.

If we farmed tigers in large numbers, soon enough they won't be endangered.

We just need to make sure there's good regulation in place first...

level 2

"These tigers are going to end up as "medicine" ingredients"

What kind of Marvel Netflix show is this? What kind of medicine are you supposed to make out of a tiger?

level 3
106 points · 2 months ago

The fake kind.

level 4

So why even go through the process of actually using tigers for this? Wouldn't it be cheaper to use like flour and say it's their teeth ground up?

level 5

Ideally yes but some people like to really make their scams legitimate.

level 3

9 times in 10, exotic animal bits are sold as boner cures. Regardless of their actual effects.

level 4
28 points · 2 months ago

Not exactly. Most of the time it’s a status thing more than a fake cure. The people who can the kinds of money for exotic animal parts have the money for viagra and it’s pretty easy to tell which one makes your dick work better. And as much as I hate to admit it, showing off that you have enough money to eat things like tiger bits or rhino horn probably can help get you laid by certain ladies.

National Geographic: https://news.nationalgeographic.com/2017/02/wildlife-watch-tigers-chase-drone-farm-china/

And there's no stopping it unless China decides to take action, which it probably won't.

Edit: missed a word

level 4

Fuck, that rained piss on my thoughts. Here, I was thinking about Tiger habitats and how alien the drone is etc.

level 4

China seems to be the worst place to be an animal :(

level 4

Why should it be stopped? If we farm cattle and chickens for food why not any other animal. Especially if it can stop poaching of animals in the wild.

level 5

People aren't logical about which animals they're okay with killing. Tigers are clearly smart and beautiful animals, so that helps them a lot. It could be argued that since Tigers are more scarce, killing them is worse. It could also be argued, though, that their scarcity is a good reason for these places to exist.

I'm conflicted.

level 5

The environmental impact of raising predators this large must be astounding, for one.

Cows release tons of methane but they eat plant matter. This is livestock that feeds on livestock.

A truly mind-blowing waste of resources for homeopathic bullshit.

level 4

Why should this be stopped? It could well be saving tiger populations.

"Hey, Tim, you see that leather farm over there?"

"Oh wow, yeah, apparently there are only like 2000 cows left in the wild. Good to see people still care about conservation."

"We should burn it down, Tim."

"Uh, what?"

"Burn it all..."

Everything is made in China though

level 4

Let’s see: the worst air polluter in the world, the worst contributor to plastic in the sea. Now this. Yep. Fuck China.

level 5

Worst air polluter because they're manufacturing nearly everything that the rest of the world uses.

It's hypocritical to be blaming them for air pollution while not realizing that being an end user directly contributes to it.

level 5

But have you read the futurology subreddit?! China is decades ahead of us and were all dumb dumbs.

level 5

By most per capita metrics, the US is a much worse polluter than China. Our per capita CO2 emission, for instance, is 2-3x that of China.

level 4

Dammit. Will they at least kill them humanely rather than stuffing them in a box and tapping them for bone marrow every week? Like they do with those sunbears and their stomach bile.

level 3

This is China, it is likely you or other Americans can't do anything about it

2 more replies

level 2

You might be right but these tigers looks really healthy and obviously have lots of space. Most tiger farms don't care about the tiger's health, they feed them just barely enough while keeping them in cramped cages and then grind up the bones when the tiger dies.

level 3

Reading this made me wonder why people bother producing real tiger bones at all? Can consumers test whether whatever is sold to them consists of actual tiger bone? It just seems like a market of fakes must already be huge.

level 4

This doesn't taste like tiger bone at all! This is Cheetah at best, if not common house cat.

level 5

Can’t fool the Chinese with the flavour of a common house cat.

level 2

I was really wondering why there were so many tigers since they're solitary creatures. I knew it couldn't be good though.

level 2

Why does this make people so mad when we do this to several other animals and think nothing of it? Why is it cruel to raise tigers for slaughter but not pigs, cows, sheep, etc.?

level 3

Probably because tigers are endangered and the “medicine” they’re made into isn’t even real medicine. It’s just folksy bullshit.

At least with livestock the calories they produce actually accomplish something.

level 4

Well if they're breeding them for this purpose then it doesn't make them any more endangered as they wouldn't exist in the first place otherwise. Additionally animal calories could be replaced with non animal calories.... Just saying, it's a bit absurd to get mad about tiger farms but not cow farms. Either they're both cruel or neither is.

level 2

I was wondering why there were so many of them in the same place. Don't they usually roll solo?

level 2

surely this is no more immoral than farming other less "majestic" animals...

level 3

You're right, I think all animal farming is equally deplorable, but a lot of the people in the comments seemed to be unaware of what this was.

level 2

Agreed. This is extremely sicken to watch.

Also consider all those Muslim Chinese in “re-education camps” this Ramadan.

level 2

I thought as much, I was pretty sure you’d rarely see this many adult tigers together in the wild

level 2
106 points · 2 months ago

Because a lot of the world isn’t in the 21st century yet.

level 3

No no no, it is. Saying that is just ignoring the problem.

level 4

You try to enforce your idea on most of Africa, China, or India. They don’t care, and worse yet you life is so cheap that someone may kill you simply for espousing such an idea. So yes parts of the world haven’t caught up yet. The only way to bring them into the current age is education and economic stability.

level 5

Or maybe, just maybe, they have better things to worry about?

Lots of people in Africa and India still don't even have enough to eat day to day and live in horrible conditions. They are trying to survive. You are the one who has the luxury of worrying about tigers.

The ultimate irony is that Europe killed off all animals dangerous to humans a long time ago, and while they want Africans to live with tigers, they're too paranoid at introducing very shy and very safe wolves back to Euro forrests.

Because while the group of people in China concerned about animal welfare is quite large and vocal, there are also a lot of people who don't GAF about anything but whatever traditional medicine they can get from killing animals like this.

That said... why is farming tigers for their organs any worse than farming cows for meat?

level 3

Yeah I dont understand this. You either think both is wrong or both is ok.

Were literally farming chickens, cows, putting shit in their bodies so they grow faster/lay eggs faster and thats perfectly ok for most.

Yet when it comes to farming tigers for their organs, OH SHIT WHAT THE FUCK MORAL COMPASS SETS IN.

Its like people thinking eating dogs is wrong.

Well if we turn it around and some Indian comes to the Western world telling us that eating cows is wrong, I wonder what the reactions will be.

Like, pick your fucking side people. Cant have your cake and eat it as well.

level 4
24 points · 2 months ago · edited 2 months ago

Only real problem that I have with it is that whatever animals are in fashion for China are over hunted. It's already caused extinctions, and put at least two others on the endangered list.

level 5

But then wouldn't farm be an alternative to poaching that reduces the endangerment of the species overall?

level 6

If it was, then the poachers wouldn't still be getting paid.

level 4

I don't have as big of an issue with this as other people seem to, and I don't give a fuck if someone wants to farm dogs for food as long as they're not being extra cruel, but the only point I'd like to raise is that meat at least has a purpose. Raising tigers just to kill them because you think their organs are magic is stupid, so I take issue with that aspect of the practice.

level 4
13 points · 2 months ago

But if you mention the hypocrisy you normally get downvoted to hell. People hate to admit that their cognitive dissonance and hypocrisy is real.

level 4

With this argument though you forget that cows and chickens were bred for the specific purpose of food. While dogs and legs say horses were bred for companionship and riding. So if we are going at the most practical level this is why it would be seen as taboo to eat and farm one but not the other.

level 4

Huh, I'm definitely allowed to think that slaughtering tigers is worse than slaughtering cows since tigers are a bit more rare. If that was an aerial view of a tiger farm that looked like Norco CA, I'd care a little less.

level 5

But they're bred for meat so it's not like it's making them any less rare. And if anything it keeps them from being poached as much so it's a good thing.

7 more replies

level 4

I think it's because tigers are an endangered species. Besides that, they're supposed to live in the wild. Our chickens/cows/pigs have been bred into oblivion, haven't been out there since we tamed them and thus are no longer wild animals

level 4

There are certainly similarities, but there are differences too.

Tigers are endangered is one.

Also, they aren't really eating them. They're making fake medicine. If the medicine worked this discussion might be different

level 3
7 points · 2 months ago · edited 2 months ago

i think that it is worse because the chicken and the cow are being turned into food, which is useful and necessary. i don't have an issue with korean's eating dog, for instance. these poor guys are being turned into snake oil, which, i would agree with JRMc5, is pretty disgusting.

level 3

It’s just as bad, and I don’t condone or participate in either.
