Marcelo did train mma for this fight- Dae Won Kim was the third opponent he was given, and even though he was promised someone of his same weight class and experience, Dae Won was 10-4 and two weight classes from what Marcelo should have been fighting at.

The fight game is full of super sketchy promoters.

Textbook Jiu-Jitsu. Wish it was a 20 minute nonstop round.

Marcelo Garcia one of the best bjj players in the world and won many competitions but how come he didn't do so well in mma?

he had one fight, where he got cut and the ref stopped it because of the cut. he dominated the grappling in the fight, and was relatively fine besides the cut. its not like he got smashed in his mma debut lol but yea he didnt like getting punched in the face and was super annoyed by how the gloves affect his grappling. he made good choice in sticking to jiujitsu.

He did fine- he got kneed and suffered a huge cut (over 100 stitches)- happens in the fight game.

He was promised at least three fights after, which he trained for over 1 year, and they all fell through cause of the promoters...so he decided to go back to grappling.

I put Marcelo's lack of a mma career solely on the promoters. He was training his butt off at ATT- you can ask Liborio and others how well he was doing. IMO, if he was given proper opponents, and built up, he could have done great things in the sport. Instead, they wanted to feed him to the sharks- by pairing him up with champs and former champs- which he agreed to fight, even though he was 0-1, and they still couldnt pull those fights together.

Can you imagine if he fought with Renzo cornering him?

Might have changed outcome, might not have- even UFC champs (former) get kneed when they do double legs.

Romero KO'd Weidman, Anderson Silva KO'd Carlos Newton, and Pele KO'd Matt Hughes that way.

I don't know anything about the promoters but I would imagine Renzo would have the connections to make Marcelo's MMA career smoother.

When he was at American Top Team, he already had the connections of one of the largest and most successful fight teams in the world and he still got screwed over.

Renzo is amazing (I got my blue belt from him)- but still not sure if he could have helped- promoters can suck pretty badly.

Something something everyone has a plan til they get punched in the face or whatever

Same reason the best kick boxers can't seamlessly transfer into MMA.

It's a different sport, and takes different training, strategy, etc. Have to meld the striking and grappling into one cohesive unit.

He tried it once without doing any striking training or any MMA training with gloves. He wasn't used to trying to finish chokes with gloves. He had something like seven fights in the USA accepted and canceled, and couldn't get anyone else to fight him. This was all during a bad time in his life when he essentially got kicked out of NYC. When he was able to come back, he opened a school and stopped trying to do MMA as he didn't enjoy it.

Thanks for the inside scoop. It's hard to get a proper first fight when you are known in other combat sports. He didn't do any cross training, just strapped on the gloves and went out there?

Yes. Wasn't training at an MMA school at the time.

he essentially got kicked out of NYC? Woah. Hard to imagine that kind of scenario happening to someone like him.

He didn't get kicked out- he got lumped into a frivolous lawsuit with his former employer and his partner. Rather than go through with the headache of being sued, he moved to FL to teach and train at ATT.

Wasn’t he training at ATT at the time?

No. He joined ATT a couple of months after this fight once all the shit went down at Alliance. Once he was at ATT, he couldn't get anyone to fight him. He was essentially in limbo in FL for a year before Josh Waitzkin brought him back to NYC and opened the academy.

He had training with MMA gloves- I saw him train with Mark Bocek in NYC - he just didnt have extensive training or a formal fight team- but he definitely had pro fighters helping him out for a month or two.

Where did he do his camp, if he even did one? NYC or FL?

Trained at Studio X in NYC (which was later changed to Alliance NYC, and now something else I believe)- that's where he was teaching too. He had closed MMA training sessions during that time.
