On the other hand, serial killers are rarely limited by time alone. They can kill several people at once, or they can go for weeks, months or years without killing anyone. Keeping them in jail for one year more or less, by itself, is unlikely to have any impact on the total number of victims.

A serial killer locked up for thirty years out of thirty-one will murder far far less than a serial killer locked up for one year out of thirty-year.

Yeah, but a serial killer locked up but not rehabilitated will kill again when they get out.

How do you rehabilitate a serial killer? What would you have done for Ted Bundy, Henry Lee Lucas, Ian Brady, Fred West etc?

Frankly, I don't know. I'm not a psychologist who has studied the mind of a serial killer with a goal of finding a way that might rehabilitate them.

Fair enough. I think its pretty established such figures can't be rehabilitated.

Tbf, most don't try to rehabilitate what they consider irredeemable.

And one of the few serial killers in a country that focuses on rehabilitation over punishment isn't set for review until over a decade from now, so we really won't be able to see if he's been rehabilitated until then. (Norway, Fjotolf Hansen)

Though apparently the BTK killer is also being studied and while not cured, he does seem to be managed.

Yes, now he's in prison in solitary confinement.
