I've been playing Modded Minecraft since vanilla version 1.2.5 came out. I've played a lot of packs, and I've put more time in this game than in any other, by far. I've also been extremely vocal in my criticism of FTB, starting around the time FTB and Curse partnered and JadedCat (And other excellent people) parted ways with FTB.

I really, really wanted Continuum to be what made me say "Wow, FTB really can make awesome packs!" Unfortunately, Continuum isn't a good pack. It's maddeningly average, at best. It's not horrible, but there are far better, more polished options for just about any kind of pack you could want, in both new versions of MC and in 1.7.10.

It's suffering from the same issues Unstable, Beyond, and Horizons suffered. There is nothing spectacular about any of these 4 packs - none of them do anything exceptionally well. That is, in my opinion, the crux of the problem. FTB used to put out the most polished, biggest, and best kitchen sink packs. They tried something new with Infinity Evolved, and it worked. But now? Now they've fallen into a rut of mediocrity. I want FTB to make the packs that are the biggest, best ones out there, with the high level of polish we've come to expect.

That's the biggest issue, from what I've seen - these aren't the heavily configured polished experiences they used to put out, it's just a bunch of mods configured to work decently together. I'd say any decent independent pack developer can put out a pack that is as good or better than FTB is less time, with more frequent updates and better integration. And you know what? It shouldn't be this way.

I love how amazing third party pack developers are these days, but while independent pack developers have gotten far better at a very rapid pace, FTB seems to have only regressed. FTB went from the top of the field to the most average pack developers out there. Sure, there are worse, but no one plays those packs. FTB retains popularity from bygone days, and just has so many players that they can out out nearly any pack and have thousands of people play it, for no reason other than the FTB logo on the title screen. I'm just sad that the FTB name doesn't seem to mean anything anymore.

I've been playing FTB Continuum for a little while now (MultiMC reckons about 35 hours). I'm not much beyond early game (I've got initial RF, and just got the empowerer) and honestly, I'm finding it a bit hard going. I thought I'd put my impressions down here, to see what others think and maybe help others thinking of starting the pack to see if they'd like it. First of all, I should say that I wanted to like the pack. I've generally enjoyed FTB packs in the past, and I've been looking for an interesting 1.12 pack. And in many ways, I do like the pack - it's got a definitely different "feel" than the average kitchen sink pack, which is nice. But I wouldn't say, at least at the moment, that I'm enjoying playing it. There's a strong feeling of early game tedium, and not in a "good" way (anyone starting an expert mode pack who doesn't expect some grind has misunderstood the idea, IMO, but there's grind and there's tedium...)

Some specifics:

  • The well-known issues with the crafting times in the EFab aren't actually that bad, IMO. As people have said, set the smeltery controller going and go and do something else. No real issue. And anyway, I think they are reducing the time in the next update.
  • What does bother me about the EFab, though, is how manual it feels. Add that to the fact that there's a lot of switching back and forth between it and a normal crafting table (wood -> planks in crafting table, planks -> chest in EFab, chest -> storage drawer in crafting table) and it makes multi-step crafting feel distinctly more tedious than it normally does. I'm sure it's possible to automate it as the game goes on, but early game it's just irritating.
  • There's a lot of progression stuck behind certain resources. Gold is pretty critical early on (for the clockwork engine and thermionic fabricator) and I've found very little of it, which is incredibly annoying. Blaze powder is needed for the blast furnace, and for firewood (to get an autosmelt Fortune III pick, which is acknowledged as the best way to do early ore multiplication) and the hunt for a nether fortress is always one of those "am I going to be lucky?" exercises.
  • The recipes are a bit weird too. At this early stage it looks like big chunks of some mods are unavailable. There's Thermal Expansion, but no recipe for a pulverizer. It's visible in JEI as one of the ways of making pulverized iron, but no recipe for the machine itself. Is it something that gets unlocked later, or just a badly handled JEI config? I've no way of knowing. So I don't know what I should plan on using as I progress.
  • The quest book is not that much help either, on that score. It has a nice progression tree, and leads you through what is obviously the "intended" path, but there are some really useful options that are not in the questline (Steve's carts for a tree farm - the quests have no tree farming approaches; AA lasers for item/fluid/RF transfer - available much earlier than itemducts/fluiducts; and so on).
  • The AA lasers are also a good example of another issue - some options (for example, transfer pipes and itemducts) are pretty expensive, involving heavily customised recipes, and yet item lasers are basically unchanged recipes. In one way this is good, because it means that there are cheaper options, if you're willing to look. But in another way it's frustrating - it's really hard to have any good intuition about what's going to be affordable at any point.

I do feel that the pack looks like it'll be good once I get past the initial phase, but whether I'll remain interested long enough to get to that point remains to be seen...

How do I combine essentia types in TC5? The essentia combination guides must be used for something, so how do I combine them (e.g. ignis+perditio=gelum)?

I have been developing a mod using Kotlin with Intellij. Whenever, I run the code on Intellij, Minecraft loads and so does my mod. To export the mod, I went into the forge folder and did "gradlew build". It made the build folder with the libs, and I put it in the mods folder and it would crash upon run. I made sure the versions matched, but I don't know what else to check.

I'm yet to see something like this. Does anybody knows anything about?

I was recently recommended at looking into AE for high level storage. I've created a network so far and I'm successfully able to store some materials.

However, to make larger storage cells (I currently have one 64k cell) costs a LOT of materials and a LOT of time.

I've done some research and found people "starting off" with 1k cells and moving up after inputing certain items. I'm kind of confused on this. Is each cell created not just added to the total amount of storage? Is there a technique I'm missing in order to store things efficiently?

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance!

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to find a way to (semi-)automatically pump accumulating creosote into a TC smeltery (to store large amounts of liquids). I can't get the faucet+casting channels to work and searching for tutorials brings up TC versions pre-1.7 which sadly aren't of any use.

What kinds of fluid tanks are you using for this?

I'm still pretty much in the early game, got some power with Canolas and can make steel plates. Should I grind for the Advanced Tank?

Help's appreciated!

Edit: It's working! Thanks a lot! :) https://prnt.sc/jmlq9w

I'm trying to gather Prosperity shards to further progress in Mystical Agriculture and I was wondering if adding Luck would increase the chance of the drop.

Slimey is in the title since I would figure it would work in a similar fashion.

Alternatively.. I would appreciate other ways to farm Prosperity shards, lol.

Edit: I'm currently on ATM 3 v5.9.4b Edit 2: Wow.. I completely forgot the slimey spawned slimes and not slimeballs. SIGH.

I haven't played a modded pack for about 2 years now. Anyone have a good starter pack to get into? Looking for something that isn't a grind and possibly is quest based. I remember a good amount of how early machines works and the different types of powers. Any help is appreciated.

Hiya!

My friends and I have recently gotten into STA but when using the tips from u/borg286, we noticed that the buffalo totem doesn't seem to actually do anything besides display the haste effect.

Our tools/fists/ect all swing very rapidly, but as for breaking blocks faster there doesn't seem to be any noticeable difference between no haste and haste 3.

I have tested the buffalo totem on a dedicated server, a LAN, and in my personal single player, as well as other haste giving items up to Age 1 and haste just doesn't seem to work properly.

I did my best to look around for others having this problem, but so far I haven't had any luck and have decided to post here in hopes for some answers! Its probably just a bug or some form of UE, but if anybody else is having this problem or has found a fix, please let me know!

Hi there.

I recently washed a ton of iron ore and ended up with a large amount of small piles of nickel dust. I was wondering though if you actually need the small piles for recepies instead of the large ones.

I searched the wiki and it only listed crafting to small piles of other alloys, witch doesnt answer my question though: Do you need small piles for anything or can I craft them all to normal nickel dust to save space?

Thanks for your answers.

Hello everyone,

I've been trying out 1.10 for a little bit now, being a 1.7 diehard. I was testing the look of some blocks in a creative test world I have, when I noticed that the creative builders wand only lets you place as many blocks as you have in your inventory. When playing creative in 1.7 I would only need one block in my inventory, and could place as many as I wanted. Is there a way to do this in 1.10 as well?

My only excursion to Venus so far was highly unsuccessful. I lost my space suit, died repeatedly and cheated myself home. And forgot to chunkload the teleporter there.

I checked the pre-flight checklist, googled some and I need the Shield Controller. Which in catch 22 style is loot in Venus dungeon.

So what do I do next?

Hey everybody, i'm currently midgame and trying out all. The different mods in earnest this time, which caused my energy system to be... Scattered.

Energy cells from thermal do not like systems that have generation as well as consumption and caused them to jam at every production hick up, so i made a loop with that system, which seemed stable.

Currently i have energy surplus which i tried to donate to a voidmine, however i find it hard to direct that surplus. I tried using extra cells that recieved power from my main system, as a tunable buffer, which would be turned on when my storage is nearly full. However this caused my meta-stable system to yam again. Does anyone know a better storage system, or a better way to control powerflow?
