It's Thursday and this means it is a day to talk about lore! If you're seeking lore resources, check out The Lore Train.
Lets talk about reflections.
XIV does not use "real-time" accurate reflections on equipment. Or anything now that I think about it (shiny floors while using DX11 is a completely different thing, that has nothing to do with this.)
Instead, XIV uses point-based reflections for each area. Basically, no matter where you are standing in that area, you will always see the same reflection on your shiny equipment surfaces from the same directions. Kugane is like this, and this is where the googly eyes come from.
In this entire area of Kugane, no matter where you stand you will see the exact same reflections on your glasses or other reflective equipment. So those who are talking to the wandering minstrel and seeing googly eyes, go talk to another NPC anywhere else in this area and you will see them as well. NOTE: you HAVE to be facing south since that is where the "eye" reflection originates.
The point in this area of Kugane is somewhere in the center of that blue highlighted area from earlier. Which means you are getting a reflection of this image (just a bit higher off the ground).
And because XIV reflections are such shit quality, that umbrella gets scaled down into a pixelated mess. hence why it looks like an eyeball.
So there ya go. The googly eyes can be boiled down to an old reflective system that gets worse when an umbrella gets scaled down so much that it looks like a fucking eyeball......
edit: for those saying its the lantern, it is not. https://i.imgur.com/MjDCJ9t.png
the lantern has a design. the umbrella is just a black dot with a black ring around it. the reflection on the glasses matches the umbrella.
also, it cant be the lanterns due to the direction of the reflection. to see the "googly" eyes, you have to face south, which is the same direction as the umbrella. if it were the lanterns reflecting, you would have to face east and west.
I made a text post a moment ago asking if people wanted to collaborate our efforts into creating a stockpile of information as to which enemies mutate, and at what time of day/weather conditions. Apparently the list already exists! Since I hadn't been able to find it anywhere, I'm going to share it here:
For those who don't know, if a mob mutates before you kill it, it's a guarantee to obtain light from it, and you get bonus exp. If it mutates when completing a 10/20/30 chain, you get a larger amount of exp, and even more light!
Seriously on top of the mindless grind I feel like it's so bright it could do permanent damage to my eyes.
I am looking to group with some folks for specifically obtaining rare Triple Triad cards. I want to play more Triple Triad with folks and collect some more cards. Does anyone know is there a community specifically for this sort of thing?
Edit: If there isn't I might actually be up for starting a community if there is enough interest!
I started playing about 2 weeks ago and I bought the starter edition of FFXIV. I now want both the expansions but I'm not sure what I'm supposed to buy.
Right now, Square Enix have a deal until August 22nd for 60% off the complete edition. I would buy this, but before I do, since I already have the base game, if I buy the complete edition, can I still redeem it on my account or do I need to buy the DLC's standalone?
I'm wondering how people find Free Companies to join while IN-GAME!
I'm an ilevel 370 Astrologian/RDM main and my free company is pretty inactive.
Is there is a spot in-game where you can go to look, where FCs can maybe post?
I sometimes see people shouting in chat, but on Diabolos, it's sorta a rarity.
I know the Lodestone offers free company "standings," but I don't know how to make heads/tails of those rankings, nor do I really care about them. I'm sorta ignorant to how FCs fit into the XIV world aside from "here's a collection of people that work like a guild," so rankings/etc. don't really mean much to me.
EDITEDIT: Someone kindly pointed out to me in DM that there is a subreddit for recruitment purposes! I'm still new to reddit so forgive me. I looked at it and I'm not sure it's... really what I'm aiming for? Where would one normally go IN-GAME to find people whose free companies they could join?
I'm doubtful the type of FC I'm looking for would use the subreddit I just browsed through.
Sorry for all the edits!
I love DRK out of the three tanks, how ever I feel like DRK is in a weird place atm. Does he need a rework or a buff?
I was also wondering about its ungodly mana spending. Should Darkside operated like unchained??
