Best line in his verse. I love how kendrick has gotten to the point where he can take shots at everyone at once and everyone knows its true but can't do shit about it.

Gotten to the point? He was doing this five four years ago in 2012 2013 with Control.

Good call, got my summers mixed up

201 points · 1 year ago

With Control he basically invited people to do something about it. It's funny you mention that verse cus it's almost like this line is the result of nobody being able to actually step up.

171 points · 1 year ago

It's because like 99% of people in the game right now are just soft as hell and too afraid of an actual rap beef (not the massive let down that was Drake x Meek). There is an extremely large portion of Kendricks fan base that respects him over everyone else and no rapper wants to alienate a fanbase that large.

80 points · 1 year ago

War Pain is underrated

117 points · 1 year ago

It was too little far too late. His first clapback was already late and on top of being trash, almost got him sued for sampling music without permission. If someone roasts, walks out of the room, walks back in, roasts you again, then a couple days later you have a SUPER weak comeback... It doesn't matter how fire anything you say after that is, you're done.

Joe Budden vs. Drake was 1 sided as fuck, Budden bodied drake for over 3 songs but Drake never hit back because he knew he wouldn't gain anything or lose anything by not responding.

No Shopping was the first thing to come out though. Drake posted his verse on Snapchat or something then Budden responded with all those tracks. Drake never responded other than shoutouts at concerts and stuff.

Most of those are generally legit but I don't think they fit the criteria of what people want in a beef.

  • Big name current/relevant star in hip-hop.

  • Outright disses, not subliminals.

  • Multiple songs and lasting over weeks/months.

I don't think any of the beefs really meet that criteria. People want Jay-Z vs Nas or early 2000s Ja vs 50. We haven't had that in a while.

Joey Bada$$ vs Lil B lmaoooo

Lol no one gives a fuck about a Joe Budden v Drake beef. People want two top tier rappers to beef, and none of the beefs you listed fit that description

130 points · 1 year ago

Lol you can't be serious.

89 points · 1 year ago

That's literally a drake line... idk it seems pretty direct

Why won't he say his name then?

Yet he calls out others for not saying his name

Bruh literally used a line from one of his verses, at that point everyone knows who youre talking to. Like in element when he opens with the chorus to "I don't fuck with you", rappers shouldn't have to spoon feed it to the listener

He never says that in element though

It's not really taking a shot at any one person.

It's more like chiding the industry for letting something natural (and not synthetic) get as big as they have.

So yeah, in an indirect way there are pop artists this takes aim at, but it's really directed at their managers, executives, etc. It's criticizing the system.

I don't get it

He raps about real shit and it went mainstream, normally mainstream hip hop is about materialistic not "real" shit.

It's also a nice shot at all the materialistic rappers who can't outsell him and his introspective and socially relevant albums. Love this line.

"I would have all of your fans if I never went pop and just stayed on some conscious shit"

  • Drake, on Game's 100

229 points · 1 year ago

the problem is, Drake never did "conscious shit" all that well, so he's probably just flat wrong. Drake is in the perfect lane for his abilities.

seriously what "conscious shit" is he talking about staying on? Being emotional about relationships?

55 points · 1 year ago

Personally I think "conscious" Drake's forte is describing his interpersonal relationships between his lovers, his family, his friends, and his fake friends/enemies. Yes he doesn't get quite as conscious as Kendrick, but Drake knows how to relate relational struggles to his audience, a la "Marvins Room" or "Look what you've done."

Yes, Drake has a great sound for a pop appeal, but I think he does a better job at getting his audience to understand how he feels about the people in his life.

Kendrick is excellent at looking at the overall picture, and I think he does a great job (if not the best job) establishing his place and thoughts on the world around him, but I don't think he can draw the emotion of relationships, be it romantic or platonic, as well as Drake can.

2 more replies

16 points · 1 year ago

I'm not a person who is wildly familiar with all of Drake's work, so I don't want to say something and miss the boat, but I kind of agree. I'm not sure.

It was probably one of those subliminals he wishes he didn't say in passing... like Jay Elec. I bet he never thought in a million years Kendrick would call him out on that dumbass "we don't know what he's talking bout" comment, but Dot ended up threatening his career over it lmao.

The mixing on this sounds really off. I like the verse from Kendrick but honestly it doesn't seem like it fits over the instrumental. Rather hear Joey's freestyle over this beat.

Edit: People saying Tumay claiming he mixed this - I really don't give a fuck. It doesn't sound good - be it on engineers end or the upload provided and put on Audiomack. Just because a great audio engineer worked on a track doesn't mean it came out well. Mike Dean has a number of poor mixings in his catalog that he stands by.

65 points · 1 year ago

i agree man. the way it sounds to my ears it's as if future and the beat are lower and grittier in the mix while kendrick's verse sounds cleaner and higher pitched

I get it, Kendrick is a great artist.

But his verse on this didn't fit the song whatsoever.

Mostly because bars don't belong being near mask off.

Actin' like this song got popular because of anything besides that flute and molly percocet being club shouty.

People like to think that conscious rappers and trap rappers hate each other and have nothing in common. When in reality they both have things to learn from each other and to be great you need to be aware of what others are doing.

Not gonna lie, Kendrick's flow sounds very similar to Eminem's recent choppy flow. Personally I love it, but it leaves hhh at a crossroads: "Do I admit Eminem pioneered a good flow or say Kendrick had a bad verse" 🤔

Why do the majority of this sub dislike Eminem anyway? You can't deny that he's a great.

16 more replies

7 points · 1 year ago

I haven't lurked /r/hhh long enough - is Eminem disliked here or something?

23 points · 1 year ago

Yeah most things Eminem does here are hated on for being too technical. While I agree most of his verses nowadays sound really weird the sub also praises people who can't rap well at all, so it comes off as hypocritical. Seems like people here are predisposed to hate technical rapping.

9 points · 1 year ago

I have my Bias Goggles on most of the time - from what I can tell the sub doesn't care for Drake and has fond memories of Lupe, so that's pretty much the bare minimum I need from a hip hop community lol.

Seeing everyone (not just /rhhh, but the industry in general) go ape shit over Kendrick now makes me upset that Lupe didn't have Dre producing him and/or Kanye throwing his Chi-Town weight behind him. It's like, where the fuck were all these Conscious Hip Hop fans a decade ago!?!

We all left after lasers.
