Hope that kid is going to be okay (Or as okay as she can be) and is getting plenty of support and comfort. I can't even imagine being in her shoes, and it's a little unsettling that there's no detail or assurance about her well-being in the article

Edit: thanks to those who used common sense and understood that I meant that I hope she recovers. It's a horrible traumatic event, but her life is not over. She'll have a long, incredibly rough journey ahead; saying her life is "totally ruined" implies she's better off dead which is obviously untrue and I sincerely hope not a thought running through her head. Just sending well wishes that poor kid's way.

What the fuck is wrong with people on Reddit now? A 14 year old girl was raped in broad daylight. She will never feel safe enough to leave her home again. Memories of this will haunt her for the rest of her life. And people hop on the top comment to make fucking jokes? Fuck this site and fuck everyone who tries to make a joke for some god damn internet points. Downvote the shit out of me I don't care, but there is a human being out there who just had the most traumatic experience of her life. This is not a situation to make light of.

Thank you, yeah. Go into any big thread on /r/news or worldnews and the top comments are always stupid puns, movie quotes, and 'switcheroos'. And for some reason the overgrown children you see regularly posting in these default subs just think their 'fun at parties' quips are such a great contribution to threads about rape, massacres, government executions, etc.

We have dedicated subs for offensive humor, why is this weak shit always at the top of news threads.

1.2k points · 10 months ago

It's how Reddit is. These people live in a fucking bubble and can't empathize with any serious shit. A girl getting raped? That doesn't effect them. But their precious internet points do so better crack some fucking jokes because that's all those pathetic assholes have inside their little bubble.

396 points · 10 months ago

I'm glad I found this comment. I feel the exact same way. It is utterly DISGUSTING. Rape is a horrible crime and all these top comments are doing is just fucking ignoring it. Heartless.

Every moment someone dies that probably didn't deserve it. Right now, someone is experiencing grave pain who doesn't deserve it.

The world is fucked up and jokes are something that gives people power in that darkness. No one's making jokes about her, I say leave them be. If the whole world stops everytime something cruel happens, we're gonna be stopped for a long time.

746 points · 10 months ago

I usually agree but holy shit. It's making me feel sick the way u/traconi puts it. Maybe we don't need to prove the worth of jokes every time. Imagine if she was reading thos thread man. It can't hurt to restrain ourselves now and then.

Looks like the comment was removed. Got gold so quickly too. Wonder what happened.

192 points · 10 months ago

I just started "Reddit" about a year ago and everyone is a fucking asshole. I wonder how so many horrible people are on this planet.....then u look at Reddit and you realize their all here.

Stay off the default subreddits. Go find one for a hobby or interest of yours.

Holy fuck thank you for saying this. It's not even 'Making light' of the situation, it's just making semi-relevant jokes.

Wasn't even a good joke, brother.

I was thinking the same thing. It seriously saddened me. I'll die on this hill with you. Upvoted.

3.5k points · 10 months ago

Sadly, after a rape, it's advised the victim keep all their clothes on to recover as much evidence as possible within a rape kit :(

So, many women have to spend 6+ hours in the clothes they were attacked in after the incident :(

Hope they catch the bastard.

You don't need to keep your clothes on. Just don't wash them or yourself. The not being able to take a shower after is the worst.

21 more replies

God, that's awful. Is there no way to start the process faster? Like, after it's said to be a rape the victim can't be rushed to get it over with?

Hey I work as a hospital responder who sits with and advocates for anyone coming to a hospital and reporting sexual assault in my area. When the survivor decides to do the full rape kit examination, it's a really long process because the nurse is trying to methodically collect all the evidence they can. They collect their own narrative statement from the survivor, which takes 1-2 hours in my experience, and then there's the actual data collection-extensive photographs, swabs, combing, vaginal exam, etc. Its completely exhausting and we try to do it as fast as we can and be as supportive as possible so we're not re-victimizing the survivor. But there's no quick way to properly collect evidence, help the survivor process things, give them resources for after care, and make sure they're medically fit to be released.

IIRC... NYC alone always have (a number somewhere in the thousands) of kits waiting to be processed. For some stupid reason it's not a priority for them, and they're not the only place with this problem.

There's a huge movement right now to help push this issue and get the kits tested and caught up. http://www.endthebacklog.org It's an amazing organization that is actually making changes!

195 points · 10 months ago

One reason is that rape kits only determine if the two parties have had sex. There are a number of rape cases where the act of sex is not in dispute, just the level of consent involved. Rape kits are often still taken but there is no need to process them.

369 points · 10 months ago

True. In my case he tried to say we never had sex. And the kit was processed and proved otherwise. Then he changed his story to "it was consensual."

Yada yada yada... he's in prison.

If one of the two parties is 14, I'd say that proves rape, whether it was consentual or not.

that would require society giving an actual shit about rape victims, instead of periodically gathering around the one story that tugs their heartstrings the right way.

For example: there's years and years of untested rape kits all over America, but that takes a backseat to making sure cops have the latest Ford Explorer.

When is rape not horrendous?

464 points · 10 months ago

Maybe it's alluding to the idea that although all rape leaves a huge amount of mental trauma with the victim, victims may not necessarily face as much physical violence in every case as the victim in this one did.

I mean, in my opinion an 18 year old having consensual sex with a 17 year old is not horrendous yet is considered rape in some places.

A number of states have Romeo and Juliet laws so that as long as the couple is within a few years, or the minor is over a certain age (usually 16), it's not considered statutory rape.

Thanks Transformers: Age of Extinction for forcibly teaching me this fact completely unnecessarily!

1.4k points · 10 months ago · edited 10 months ago

statutory rape. thats very different from non consensual sex

edit: i'm stupid

Yeah, but I'd imagine that if a deer is having sex with a person it is non consensual.

OP asked "When is rape not horrendous?". /u/Dog-Person gave a valid answer to that question. Yes, statutory rape is very different from non-consensual sex. That's why it is an excellent answer to the question "When is rape not horrendous?".

To be clear, statutory rape can be horrendous too. It just isn't always, and happens to make a good example in this case.

"When is rape not horrific?"

"When the label of rape is used incorrectly"

"Of course, but that's not what we were talking about"

"Yes, it literally was."

55 points · 10 months ago · edited 10 months ago

In those countries, the statue stands to protect the children having sex. The reason his answer was ironic is that children can't consent to having sex with an adult in those countries. Edit: in both situations -- statutory or not -- rape is being described as having sex with someone who could not and/or would not give consent

You can save time next time by calling it "rape". Sex is always consensual; if it's not consensual, it's rape.

Most places have what are called Romeo and Juliet laws that legally permit these kinds of relationships provided the people are within a certain age difference.

I think most modern legal jurisdictions include differential close to the age of consent, so your example is off?

When one person rapes another, we think that rapist is evil. It's horrendous, yet reaffirming to know that evil exists and we are not evil since we are not rapist.

When one person rapes another and nobody intervenes despite availability (which is implied in the "broad daylight park" part), it challenges our belief that we are not evil. Because although we have never raped, we have walked through several parks, we have witnessed wrongdoing, and from time to time, we may have stayed.

A rape is horrendous, but only for the raped and people who care about him/her. A public rape requires us to confront that not all evil necessarily rapes, or even need rape, in order to be evil.

58 points · 10 months ago · edited 10 months ago

There are a number of situations in which a sexual act is rape in the law but no violence takes place, just on the off chance that you're interested in an answer and not just showing off what a good person you are.

Look at Julian Assange's case for instance. Or that hilarious film "The Boat That Rocked".

Sexual assaults, even violent ones, also vary widely by level of violence, the acts, numbers of people, duration and some other factors too horrendous to list in detail. Again, just in case you actually want an answer.

The real problem here is getting your headlines from trashy papers.

Yeah, that's where the focus should be, on the adjectives used by a random redditor and news organization. Especially when the word fits.

124 points · 10 months ago

It's "horrendous" because independent wants views. They are in the business of exploiting misery, tragedy, etc for money.

Of course all rapes are horrendous. But they titled it for effect.

So every news source. Got it.

1 more reply

[deleted]
14 points · 10 months ago

Perhaps calling it horrendous is to imply it was even more violent than the usual rape? Most rape is non-consensual sex where the woman is more coerced than physically attacked while she struggles.

Statutory rape. (consenting obviously)

LPT: Rapists don't care about light levels. Unfortunately, secluded 'public' areas can get dangerous.

Edit: Apparently this thread is locked. Unfortunately, a couple trolls responded and want that rape victim to feel better because 'most' rapes aren't just random stranger rapes in secluded areas or roadside grabs, so let's not talk about using a little common sense because 'fear mongering.' Much better to walk into those situations all alone then get PTSD and struggle for years to maintain healthy romantic relationships with others.

553 points · 10 months ago

The vast majority of rapes do not take place in secluded public areas. Those areas might be dangerous due to other kinds of crimes, but rape is not the main concern. Stranger-rape is relatively rare. Acquaintance-rape is way more common. You are way more likely to be raped by someone you know than someone you don't.

Stop fearmongering. The vast majority of rapes are Date Rapes, and other types of rape that involve someone the victem knows.

I'm just here to say that redditors in your comments are going to give you a ton of absolutes as if they are experts. Research the subject that has the opinions of people that have years of actual experience. I only say this because it's a complicated answer and it's not always the same reason.

Thanks for the reasonable response. The amount of hate and anger in my inbox is too damn high.

We should keep in mind that when we delude ourselves into thinking that all rapists have extreme mental illness, we get the ball rolling down the hill of dismissing less violent, sensational rapes like date rapes or rapes of drunk people by athletes, college students, etc. We shouldn't fool ourselves into thinking that rape is only done by 'crazy' people - we'd be shocked if we knowingly met rapists - they're not always the monsters we hope they'd be

Low impulse control mixed with a sexual attraction for teenagers.

570 points · 10 months ago

I have low impulse control. I eat too much candy and buy stupid shit I don't need. I don't rape.

So yes a mental illness

304 points · 10 months ago

Not everyone who does shitty things is mentally ill. In fact most of them aren't.

80 points · 10 months ago

Some people are just assholes.

Low impulse control isn't usually mental illness. It can often be directly linked to how much independence they get or I should say neglect during childhood. Those who are cared for and shown how to create habits and willpower don't do this type of thing

[deleted]
145 points · 10 months ago

certain conditions like FASD (fetal alcohol, where a baby's brain is damaged by mothers' drinking) have a direct effect on impulse control and propensity to violence too

And FASD is one of the most under-diagnosed conditions out there.

Does this hold true for children who were raised by someone who doesn't drink while pregnant?

[deleted]
91 points · 10 months ago

Yes, unfortunately alcohol causes physical brain damage in fetuses which is irreversible.

Obviously people who grow up in a structured, loving environment do better but it's about mitigation.

it's interesting how FASD creates behaviors that lead people to crime:

  1. mood swings

  2. low understanding of consequences / cause and effect

  3. rage and extreme anger

  4. very high susceptibility to peer pressure

  5. tendency to addictions

And the weird part is, it's all physical..."hardware" problems that leads to this behavior being more prevalent

This comparison of two brains is heartbreaking.

http://www.faslink.org/fasbrail.jpg

Many studies have shown a huge overrepresentation of people with FASD in the criminal justice system.

They account for about 1% of all babies but studies in BC (Canadian province) have shown 23% of inmates would have some form of FASD.

http://www.csc-scc.gc.ca/research/forum/e143/e143s-eng.shtml

41 points · 10 months ago · edited 10 months ago

Is it just coincidence that the babies with FASD show symptoms that most heavily drunk people have or is that literally the alcohol imprinting those effects on a growing babies brain when it's ingested by the pregnant woman?

I might sound dumb asking this question but this is actually really interesting and I would like to know more.

Edit: Wow for anyone interested more in this check this image out!

Thank you for that post, I had never known this.

2 more replies

This essentially boils down to neglect. But yes true as well

Low impulse control isn't usually mental illness.

Low impulse control is, however, a symptom of a ton of mental and mood disorders.

Low impulse control however is one of the main symptoms of many mental illnesses. Although by itself it is not a mental illness, combined with other symptoms it is. I'd say it's a pretty good bet to label the perpetrator as mentally ill seeing as he physically raped/tortured someone. Obviously it isn't just one symptom by itself in other words.

I have a friend who's has a friend from his younger days that developed schizophrenia. Before he was medicated (and the reason they found out he had schizophrenia) he walked into a women's locker room, sat on the bench and started jerking it. When the cops showed up, he had no clue where he was or why the cops were there, he thought he was at home having sex with his ex girlfriend who had broken up with him like a year before that.

I met him at my friend's wedding and you wouldn't know there was anything wrong with him now because he's medicated to shit.

Not really sure where I'm going with this, but mental illness can really fuck with how you see the world.

68 more replies

I would like to point out that rape often has nothing to do with attraction, so much as the concept of having power over someone else.

It has to do with both. Saying it doesn't have go do with sex is just about as wrong as it sounds like it should be.

https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/insight-therapy/201602/rape-is-not-only-about-power-it-s-also-about-sex

Yes and no. It's often a power thing, but it doesn't have to be. It's probably most often a combination of sexual attraction, lack of sexual release, and a display of power. But it can also happen as a result of any one or any combination of two of those things.

613 points · 10 months ago

Yeah, that will be the reason commentary gets locked... because the description offends us...

My friend, it is because people that extrapolate the actions of all individuals who fit a description are hurting innocents. They are also hijacking someone else's tragedy to spread their ignorance. It's unhelpful, hateful, and in aggregate makes the world a far worse place.

As opposed to the top comments which hijacked someone else's tragedy to make shitty jokes about mustaches.

People nowadays seem to have a lower bar for what constitutes "racism". I've found commentators having a calm discussion to be interrupted by emotionally charged people (on both sides) with triggered sensibilities. It's the Internet, you can't avoid that.

They really should.

Prison sentences are not given just to punish someone, but to rehabilitate them. These sick fucks are never gonna rehabilitate. They're just gonna live on the population's taxes until he gets out and destroy's another person's life and gets in again, or just rots in there.
