Yeah this is always an issue on r/Europe where countries yell at Italy for not doing more while conveniently forgetting that Italy has already been fined for refusing to let the ships dock. It’s also interesting to note that the majority of the NGO’s bringing over the migrants are not Italian.

So imagine this: while France is refusing to allow ships carrying migrants to dock at their ports and while refusing to open detention centers in France, French NGO ships are carrying migrants to Italy instead. It’s ridiculous.

level 3

Seems like the continuation of this migrant fiasco is going to lead to the entire EU dissolving.

level 4

This really should be discussed more. If there was no migrant crisis, the existence of the EU wouldn’t be under threat right now.

This is what happens when some people have the ability to vote in a way that must compel other people to be benevolent while the first party doesn't actually have to do anything.

People want to feel good about themselves without actually having to impact their own lives.

level 6

It's also the fact that these policies literally create voters in favor of them. The migrants are eventually given the nationality, and who do you think they're going to vote for?

level 7

In the US, that's been the strategy of the DNC for the past 30 years.

level 8

Right, but democrats aren't letting in millions of radical jihadist voters, at least.

level 9

True, we've left that to Europe.

level 8

Remember that time Democrats gave amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants? Oh wait that was Reagan

the scarier depth is that some people vote for something that directly benefits them in the very short term knowing full well that it will harm them in the long term.

Literally, right as they start to pull free and clear of the Eurozone financial disaster and things start to look goo for the EU, the migrant issue brings it all down again.

As a non-European looking at this from the outside, it really seems like the mentality of the individual nations is "Sure, we will help the migrants! Just dont sent them to our country!"

level 5

This really should be discussed more.

If you actually live in Europe, a post like yours could lead to jail time

I agree. It really feels like immigration is the biggest issue that faces progressives/left-leaning parties in elections. It is like Brexit, all the economic arguments lost out to a picture of migrants trying to enter the country.

I think it has been the single most important issues to the success of parties on the right-side of the spectrum over the last 20ish years.

level 5

Then the correct choice for these parties is to become anti-immigration. If immigration is losing you elections you need to drop it from your platform.

level 6

Appeal to your voters.

level 7

But if they can hold onto their seats then they can just import voters who will support them instead.

1 more reply

level 6

I disagree completely. This mindset of "Appeal to the voters" is why we're even in this mess. It should be a system of "Put the platform YOU believe in and let the supposed "Free marketplace of ideas" take care of the rest." What we have instead are flip floppy duplicitious scumfucks who don't have principles because their job is to just tell people what they want. "Appeal to the voters!" yeah right...

level 6

Without trying to turn this into an argument about policy, it does seem like many left-of-center parties lean further left than the general voting population of most of their countries on immigration. I know part of it is this idea "oh we need to lock down XYZ group of immigrants for the future" but groups have been saying that for decades to avail and, more to the point, people's political memories are short and thus you really can't do any kind of longterm planning expecting a group to be there.

As an issue it is only going to get worse and much harder to reach a compromise solution. Especially because now some groups have it in their best interest to keep the problem unsolved.

level 7

I think you conflated that most people tolerated the left-of-center parties on immigration rather than held those same beliefs. If immigration isn't an election issue people would still vote for those parties, but now that immigration is probably THE issue in Europe they are losing.

1 more reply

level 5

the left won't drop immigration because without steady stream of ethnic minority voters they will be crushed

US is the proof of that. The left managed to win the demographic battle there - if the country hadn't gone from 90% to 65% white since 1965 it would a one party country with Republicans running pretty much every single legislature.

level 6

Except for the fact that block from 1955 where the Democratic party held both houses until the eighties and the House of Represtenatives past that. For a while it looked like the US would go single party to the left, but the last couple decades have been a hard swing right in exactly the era when those sweet, sweet minority votes would be destroying the right.

level 6

Republicans running pretty much every single legislature.

They're doing that now, with the lower white majority than before. Your hypothesis doesn't conform to the data.

Yep. A Spanish minister gave the breakdown of the Aquarius’ passengers’ nationalities.

About 1/3rd came from a war torn country. All others are economic migrants. Sure shit is tough in their country but they are not under threat of death.

These policies just encourage more people to barge through Europe’s door. The EU is fucked.

level 4

Seems like the continuation of this migrant fiasco is going to lead to the entire EU dissolving.

Now you know why Russia has been funding al-Assad's regime to keep that civil war going.

level 5

These ships aren't carrying Syrians. They are carrying Africans.

This is ridiculous. Foreign NGOs are flooding Italy with migrants they don't want, completely bypassing Italy's existing immigration policies. French police officers have crossed the Italian border without permission. The EU has the gaul to fine Itlay for trying to stop any of this.

Italy need too grab every single migrant and put them in france. Make it their problem.

level 4

France would be able to absorb 40 million immigrants and still have a lower population density than Italy.

But then we would lose french wine fields so hmmm.

level 4

greece needs to do the same thing... dump the migrants in germany. how do they expect a country of 11 million that is bankrupt to support over a million migrants?

This has also been happening to Italy for a lot longer than it has been mainstream news. It’s been non stop since 2012-2013, and Italy gets the most of it by far.

The air campaign was launched by Britain and France. About two weeks in, they asked the United States to take over because, literally, they didn't have enough ordnance on hand for it.

level 4

The US didn’t want to go in. Obama hated the idea of it.

France pressured him with the help of Hillary. But for weeks before the French had boots on the ground and were conducting operations.

level 2

Open-Borders will be a losing issue for all Left Wing parties.

It's also irresponsible, irrational and basically absolutely ridiculous to expect Euro-Anglo nations to just house the baby factory of the 3rd world.

I was around the Feed the World campaigns of the 80s, when certain African nations faced starvation. From then to now, a number of these nations have literally double their population from like 40 to 80 million people. Whereas, during the same period, wealthy countries with a high quality of life have only increased their populations marginally and sustainably.

The planet and the ecosystems are under huge strain as it is yet the answer of LWers seems to be, just open our borders and be damned with whatever they do abroad.

level 3

Also it runs counter to the direction modern economies are headed. Importing cheap labor might have made economic sense 100 years ago, but what do we expect all these poor immigrants to be doing when everything is automated? Sit on their thumbs twiddling their dicks?

level 4

That's the billion dollar question that no open-border advocate ever seems to answer. They also don't ever answer what this is doing to a population when the majority of these Illegal Migrants are male.

To add to this, where is all this infrastructure and money required to house, feed, and provide public services going to come from.

This is why I think people who want to immigrate to European countries long term should probably be questioned on whether or not they agree with certain values. Like they should be asked about their opinions on LGBT rights, women's rights, Jewish rights, freedom of religion, etc. If they are found to have very intolerant views, they should not be allowed to immigrate.

The EU leaders aren't naive, just the voters. There's some plan going on in the halls of the EU elites that needs Europe to be disrupted by this influx, or they wouldn't allow it to continue. I have no idea what their end goal is, but every nation needs to exit the EU or they will fall prey to whatever is happening. Brexit is the smartest move we have made, whatever the short term economic fallout.

IIRC correctly, such a movement was actively taking place in Netherlands and Germany about 8-10 years ago (where immigrants were shown videos about nude beaches, LGBT relationships and other things), but I'm sure it was all quashed because a few people thought it was racist.

It's a thorny problem with no simple solution. The minute they realize that only people who give certain types of answers are allowed to migrate, they will start lying.

level 5
15 points · 1 month ago

But then when you find they are living in your country with those beliefs, you've set a precedent. Could even be a legal precedent if they wanted to draft lesiglation about it. Then if you need to remove people because they lied, it's ideaological not ethnic.

level 6

But do you see that it opens a can of worms? If you agree that citizenship can be revoked for ideological reasons, what stops the government from doing the same for political dissidents and other types of non-conformists?

To solve that problem, you can, if you wish, have different rules for native-born and foreign-born citizens. However:

(1) This is awfully arbitrary and goes against the core European principle that all citizens are equal in the eyes of the law. Do we really need to sacrifice a key gain of the European enlightenment to preserve the European enlightenment?

(2) In any case, the people who actually flee their war-ravaged hometowns are not the ones who commit acts of terror and/or hate crimes. Instead, the terrorists tend to be not the immigrants themselves but their native-born children who grow up in ghettos, develop a dislike for the surrounding culture and have a highly romanticized notion of life in their parents' original homeland. So even if you do implement laws against foreign-born citizens, it wouldn't solve your problem.

US has its own migrant crisis on the Southern Border

level 2

None of Europe should be taking these economic migrants posing as refugees.

level 2

over a million migrants have arrived in greece from 2015... there are over 60k still in camps (this is a country of 11 million people) germany has only taken a third of the migrants it promised to take in total.... of course countries are going far right. how can the mega economies of europe try to force smaller weaker nations into becoming ghettos so they can have access to cheap labor? Southern europe sees it as the rich nations of europe trying to turn them into work camps for there benefit. The only way for germany to sell this to the rest of europe is to make it seem like its about humanitarianism, instead of there aging, declining work force.

Good move. The navy which “rescues” them should take them to either the port where the migrants departed from or to that particular navy’s home country.

level 2

It's a long tradition and law to help a ship in distress. When I was in the U.S. Navy in the Mediterranean sea we received a distress call from a ship that was sinking and had a fire. It was packed with migrants. We took them on board, fed them, bandaged them up and waited to hear which European country was going to take them. Turning a warship around to bring migrants to the US is not an option. That is not the point of Navy ships.

We shouldn't let people die, but we sure as hell don't have to take a two week long journey to bring them back to the US...and we shouldn't be responsible for the entirety of their lives because we saved them.

level 3

I'd say return them to their port of origin, but you'd probably be refused there as well.

level 4

I'd say return them to their port of origin, but you'd probably be refused there as well.

So then cancel any visa agreements with the country of origin. As soon as the wives of north African leaders can't go on taxpayer-funded shopping sprees in London or Paris, they'll reverse the policies.

level 3
78 points · 1 month ago

Why should those european countries be required to take them in?

level 4

They shouldn't, but the ship that finds them shouldn't be required to take them to their home country either...

level 5
10 points · 1 month ago

Ok, but you have them on board. Italy refuses to take them. So what do you do? Keep them?

This is a complicated problem as you dont want to let people die unnecesarily, but on the other hand if you take them in then more and more will be coming.

level 6

If nobody else would have taken them, my guess is we would have taken them back to the country they left from.

level 7

My understanding of this stuff is admittedly poor, but from reading some news articles it appears to me that the problem is that you can't just pull up to the coast of Libya (or wherever) and drop them off. If the country won't take them back (and why would they?), there is no way to compel it. Unless Italy and other countries just stop following the law, and throwing them overboard right off shore or something.

level 8

Well the ship I was on is designed to invade countries. We could have put them anywhere we wanted, but that wasn't the best option.

level 9
16 points · 1 month ago

i was on a warship that responded to some shit in pakistan, having them onboard had a direct impact on combat capabilities, so it's not like you could finish the deployment with a welldeck full of these dudes. people seem to forget they are warships and not the USS mercy

level 10

Right? I was on one of the largest ships we had but we couldn't have kept them there. We had a job to do and being a hotel to migrants wasn't one of them.

level 9

Gator Navy , FTW!

level 8

Technically, waters with-in 12NMI of the coast are territorial waters. You are actually following the law by dumping them in there!

These NGO 'saving lives' are just promoting human trafficking, probably paid by the smugglers. There have been a lot of evidence that these NGOs are part of the human trafficking smugglers, including leaving boats to be retrieved to be reused and magically always know where these boats are.

If they close all boards, no one will try to migrate anymore, issue will be solved. Rescued ships return to point of departure.

Anyone who thinks Putin is a good person, keep in mind that he intentionally made the war in Syria stretch on because he saw how much the migrant problems were destabilizing Europe.

The war should have been done within its first year. Instead of finding a solution, Putin assisted Assad in driving his political opponents out of the country to become refugees.

The very same people who are complaining about the refugee problems are praising Putin for being an authoritarian, which is absolutely idiotic, because hes the one responsible for making the war last this long.

It would have been over in months if it hadnt been for Putin making the situation worse on purpose.

Putin does not just choose sides, he encourages ANY behavior he believes will be disruptive. Good or bad. As long as it gets people upset at one another.

level 2

Part of the reason Putin is boosting Assad is because Russia has bases there, also it has in a way turned Syria into his puppet state.

level 3

Go back further in history. The reason Syria has been aligned with the Soviet Union / Russia goes back to after WWII. Syria had a nice and newly independent republic. The CIA after failing to get the election results they tried to influence they backed a military coup in 1949. Largely over the Tran-Arabian Oil Pipeline. This government predictably didn't last long and led to a series of coups and eventual Russian alignment because they didn't trust the US...for obvious reasons.

keep in mind that he intentionally made the war in Syria stretch on because he saw how much the migrant problems were destabilizing Europe

Is this the part of the narrative where we blame everyone else on a US fuck up?

level 3

"Russia is trying to destabilize X" is the go-to narrative to excuse every problem and discredit all opposition now. Yes Russia is trying to destabilize the west but this has grown into an Illuminati type conspiracy theory where it's being used to oppose everyone who disagrees with the status quo.

level 3

Yes. AIPAC, erm the US government under no foreign influence, thought it would be good to block Syria's legitimate government from suppressing violent radicals. So there's civil war, ISIS, migrants...

level 2

Anyone who thinks Putin is a good person, keep in mind that he intentionally made the war in Syria stretch on because he saw how much the migrant problems were destabilizing Europe.

You're either not in Europe or you're deliberately ignoring that the opposition is not against people fleeing the active war zone in Syria. This whole discussion happening in Europe right now is not about people from Syria.

People from Syria can come and stay. People that come from other countries might get rejected. They will either object this rejection and stay or they won't have papers so they cannot be sent back. This is what many people are unhappy about and this is why there's so much uproar. Another topic is that no one knows who is registered where, who is registered twice or three times and so on.

Lol what? Russia saved the Assad Regime, the crisis would be much worse if not for Putin since Assad could have fallen and Syria now would be conflict all over among radical Jihadist groups supplied by the US and the Gulf countries.

Instead the war is now all but won for Assad and should be done after clearing out the rest of the country forthright rest of the year

level 3

Assad would have been replaced by Islamic terrorists who wanted to kill all the Shia, Christians, and other minority groups, the opposition was not some group of nice people who wanted to fight and die for luke warm moderate inoffensive values.

That's the problems with moderates, they don't die on the front lines for their causes in most cases.

level 4

The liberals genuinely believe countries like Syria or Libya consist 80% of pro-LGBT feminists that are oppressed by 'evil dictators', waiting to be liberated so they can take part in London's pride parade. When in fact it is the Western educated, secularist strongmen that keep the 80% ultra conservative populace in check. A populace that in comparison with far right westerners make the latter look like Bernie Sanders.

level 5

It's genuinely quite bizarre to me that these people think that all over the world these ultraconservative people are secretly liberal. Or worse, that they can MAKE them adopt new values through nebulous means. It's really quite remarkable.

Do not worry. The sand people are easily frightened, but they will be back - and in greater numbers.

Good, Italy did more then enough, time for Europe to step up.

level 2

BS. Time to send them back.

level 3

EU wont allow that and we have to live with that decision. I do know it`s BS that Italy and Greece have to deal with all this without real support from the other EU countries.

level 4

You guys need to look at US cities such as Detroit and Oakland, places that have become war zones, before you surrender to the EU's child-brained plans.

We know, 10s of murders in single weekend, no thanks.

It`s the idiots in Brussels who still live in 1950.

I like to think of myself as a progressive person...but with the mindset of living in the US. The US is a good bit of a melting pot, but I think a lot of people forget that Europe isnt. From what Ive observed abroad, culture is different in the US than in old European countries. To be Italian is more definite than to be American. So, I can see why a lot of these countries dont want to add more and more foreign persons to their populations, especially people who dont want to specifically become Italians/Germans/whatever, but rather want to just leave their homeland while keeping its traditions/culture. And I cant blame them for having strict policies to avoid dilution of what their countries consider valuable.

How the fuck am I being downvoted for pointing out that legislation and law is something which shouldn’t just be „shut down“ by a government?

If the parliamentary decision is made to do so ok, this didn’t happen here tho Do you want totalitary leadership, what

incredibly unfair to italy; but that's the eu for you: you can have it any which way you like, as long as it suits germany. some of the boats saving the migrants in mid-med are indeed german; why not take the migrants straight to hamburg? germany is where they want to go anyway.

I agree you shouldn’t let anyone in
