Group of teens beats 72-year-old man in Berkeley

“As far as we can tell the victim was simply walking home when he was approached from behind and attacked. There was no conversation, no property demanded.”

So they literally beat the shit out of an old man for no reason whatsoever, not even bothering to rob him. And one teen even stayed behind to give him on the last kick in the ribs for good measure. Fucking pieces of shit.

I just don't understand this. Do these feel tough after doing this? A group of young men ganging up on an old man, and attacking him from behind... What sort of twisted validation do they get from this?

Gang initiation..... gotta see if them young guns are actually ready to put in work..... sad thing

It's to test if you'll do something without remorse, regret. If they can beat the shit out of an innocent old man, they'll shoot a rival gang member no problem. It's sick.

level 4

it's the fact that they were willing to do whatever they were told. this might not necessarily take more balls, but it sure is coldhearted and proves obedience.

Surrounding area mostly but yes some there too.

People act like it's a nice low crime area or something for some reason. It's just Oakland far as I'm concerned. Someone just drew a line and said "this is a new city" and that's it.

As a liberal, none of that sounds utopic. Sounds like lazy governance.

This story reminded me A Clockwork Orange. I never quite understood why Alex and his friends kept attacking so violently, and I don't think I will ever understand it in real life either. I guess some people are just violent psychopaths. Maybe that's all you need to know.

level 2

Probably for a thrill. I think the book was Evil: Inside Human Violence and Cruelty where I read that humans can find breaking things, hurting animals, or hurting people fun. I think fantasies of committing violence must be common, but it’s mostly taboo to speak of in public. Sympathy and fear of retribution usually override such impulses, but it’s in there and can come out.

level 2

Was he playing skeeball before this happened? Did the perpetrators use hockey sticks in their attack?

level 2

This isn't a new thing.

Somebody will recognize at least one of these fucks. That fuck will roll over on the rest of them.

level 2

And then we should let a few 72 year olds beat the fuck out of them.

Does anyone really think reprobates like these will ever be productive members of society, if they're willing to beat an old man?

level 3
2.6k points · 1 month agoGilded1 · edited 1 month ago

Most of them wont, but maybe one of them will be able to turn himself around. And we dont know which one. So we have to give all them every opportunity.

level 4

Dammit... you're right.

Because giving someone the opportunity to turn their lives around not only has the potential to produce an additional productive member of society; it removes a damaged person from society, which is 100x more important.

level 5

Because eye for an eye leads to everyone going blind.

I'll never get this, they don't rob the guy or anything. Just beat him for the sake of beating him. What the fuck is the point?

Gang initiation

level 3

Sounds like the pussiest gang to join.

level 3
500 points · 1 month ago

I remember when gang initiations consisted of the applicant getting the shit beat out of them, as a show of commitment. How does beating up an old stranger prove anyone's loyalty? Even as "if you're disloyal, we'll tell the cops you beat up a guy" leverage, it goes against the whole no snitching mindset.

level 4

It proves that you’re willing to do reprehensible and cruel things for no reason other than that a higher ranking gang member told you to. They don’t need these kids to be tough or good fighters. They need them to do as they’re ordered and lose their moral compass. Beating the shit out of a defenseless old man is a good way to show that

level 5

Why aren't these scumbag leaders hunted down by the FBI? They are violent and the police seem incompetent in catching or stopping them. If the FBI can't do it, the DHS or the National Guard... I mean we spend a lot of money on defense spending and it doesn't even prevent this?

level 4

Sometimes you can pick how you join a gang. People can still choose to get jumped in. There's a vice ep on it.

level 3

"Hey I know we said jump someone right in front of the police station... and you did that... you did that I guess. I don't know. Shit. That dude was old as fuck, man."

the OP website is a piece of shit and laden with ads.

level 3
335 points · 1 month ago

You can't even rewatch the video without loading another ad.

level 2

They comment in the video about how it's happened "so close to the police department" as if it would deter them. The high school is a few blocks away (we have a lottery that mixes up the kids from the entirety of Berkeley but there's a lot of lower income kids that go there) and the PD is right across a park that's full of homelessness and general problems.

Berkeley has that high-academia sheen to it but the money comes from the people who go to the school. The city and the University, to some extent, help the people who live in the city that don't come from money, but often try to erase the problem and image of economic disparity in the area.

I grew up in that Area. Went to Washington Elementary School. I never saw any crime when that street (MLK) used to be Grove Street.

There were blacks, and most of them were nice to me. I had a friend named Jimmy. One day we went to his house and I lost a quarter that was in my pocket. Jimmy told his grandpa, and his grandpa gave me a new quarter. This was the late 70s. I hope Jimmy is doing well these days.

A quarter back then is like 3 beers

level 5

Is there a reason it can't be both?

level 5

Thats not too likely. They are just pieces of shit who did this for no reason.

Contrary to a lot of scary Facebook posts that go around, gang initiation almost never impacts random people. That kind of crime gets a lot more effort from police and is attention gangs don’t want. Most gang initiation involves doing something against another gang or similar party that won’t dare involve police. While random people have been caught in it, it is extraordinarily rare.

Fucking pieces of shit. Just a complete waste of life.

level 1

The people that want to be in gangs in that area have no idea what they're getting into, and have no conscience about how they get there. Knew a kid that kept telling me he wanted to be a "gang banger". I kept trying to tell him that's the last thing he wants and the only thing it will do is wreck his mind and his life. That was a few years ago now, and he was so happy and fun back then. He just wanted to be apart of something bigger than himself. Last time I saw him he was chugging lean and wouldn't let me step on the roach of a blunt when we finished it, because it was supposed to keep burning for his "dead homies". They're dead because all his friends were also in the gang, but who saw that coming, right? Now he's in jail.

EDIT: The kid I knew was in a gang in Berkeley. I don't think it's him in the video though.

level 1

Is this that knock out thing again? Maybe a gang initiation thing? Kids full of hate, that think random beatings are fun? Could be random attack, could be race motivated. Could be a mix of the above.

No matter what their reason for being scum, I hope they are identified and caught quick.

level 2

Gang initiation.

Martin Luther King Blvd was the historical red line in Berkeley IIRC. On one side was where black people were allowed to live and on the other side was where only white people could.
