Twelve Tribes- I only know the one in the Kootenays, BC.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twelve_Tribes_communities

Them and their creepy cult busses. The have a cafe and 'Seem' regular folk, but they are creepy AF. I have 2nd hand knowledge of their wedding vows and the (non) status of women.

This area has The Duhkabours, US draft dodgers, and more!

Nothing does crazy like out of town folk!

From what I was told by a friend of mine who grew up in Chattanooga - where one of their delis is located - basically if you join them they seize all of your assets and ship you off across the country, far away from your family and friends. Members work at one of their Yellow Deli locations and are required to live in a group home with other community members. It's a weird fundamentalist Christian type thing. They will show up at music festivals across the country in their psychedelic-looking bus trying to recruit spun out hippies with some kind of "fellow kids" tactic. I went to the Yellow Deli in Chattanooga because I was curious, it felt what I can only describe as a culty hobbit hole.

You totally nailed it. I kinda knew one woman who got married there, I didn't go to the wedding but my friends who went said the vows were not at all cool. I have a vague memory that it was "obedience to the man, devotion to the cult..." and although possibly unsaid leaving everyone and everything behind forever- and handing over what you do have...

How old are the draft dodgers at this point?

There are a lot of interesting folks down on the Olympic Peninsula, WA for it’s close proximity to Victoria, BC should they ever need to run...surprised some of them made it “all the way” to Kootenays.

Ten years ago. Nelson B.C. had a petition to put a statue of a draft dodger in front of the count house.

How old are they? Late 60's to late 70's.

level 3

I think they are around 60-75.

I believe some of them eventually had some resolution. A few Desert Storm (and the others around that time ) I do not think had the same protection. I may be getting some details wrong

Yes! I live not too far from one of the Twelve Tribes communes. My family remembers when they tried to open new locations and were run out of town in the 70s because the locals didn't like their weird conversion tactics. Yet, younger people around here seem to think they're harmless and LOVE to eat at the "quaint" Yellow Deli.

level 3

Exactly. Once I found out what the did, especially the kids- I never are there again.

I agree people fall for the 'hippy vibe ' but they are anything but what that encompasses. It's a trick!

The have a cafe

Okay, where? and what is it's name?

level 3

It's called the Yellow Deli

level 3

The Yellow Deli.

It's such a part of their cult now that most people know of them as the Yellow Deli people before they know the cult's actual name.

They also gave a really big construction company

level 3

Common Sense/Common ground or something like that. I was avoiding naming the town. It's Nelson BC

Thanks

Fuck the twelve tribes. They prey on idealistic hippies at Dead and Phish shows. They have a really cool bus that they drive around the country to concerts. They lure people onto their bus (seriously, it looks badass but also very distinct looking. Look it up) to try to recruit them. Of course being young, idealistic, and spun out on acid, these young heads easily fall victim to the Twelve Tribes' lies.

Long story short, don't get on the Twelve Tribes bus at a Phish show.

level 2

Yeah. . . The Yellow Deli people should get an episode.

level 2

I heard about them from a camping friend. Apparently they recruit around the Appalachian Trail and own some cool looking deli's.
