So excited to be here!
What you should know about me:
I came to Los Angeles when I was a child as an unrecognized refugee, after my mother came to the United State to flee the violence in El Salvador. I found out I was undocumented when I was 13, and pledged an oath to protect the Constitution when I become a United States citizen at 21.
My mother babysat other people’s children to bring me here, my father died fighting for the right to vote in El Salvador. My father who raised me, the son of field workers, was a proud union member. And now, I’m running because I represent something different. If elected, I would become the first El Salvadorean and the first formerly undocumented woman in Congress.
I grew up in Boyle Heights and City Terrace and I’m a proud graduate of local public schools, including Roosevelt High. (Where my Rough Riders at?) I am a graduate of East Los Angeles College, Cal State LA, and USC.
I’m an award-winning journalist, radio broadcaster, and labor activist. Right before I declared my candidacy for Congress, I was at Standing Rock as a water protector for several months. I decided to run for Congress as I drove out of North Dakota. I asked myself the question, “What can I do to serve?” And then I found out my district seat was going to be vacant.
I housed Bernie folks during his campaign, and worked on a platform called My People that told the story of Bernie supporters. And now, I’m running a people-powered campaign. We don’t have big donors, we don’t have political insiders. But I’m proud that we’ve built something special.
