So will he get his deposit back or not?

468 points · 3 months ago

No one ever gets their deposit back regardless.

Yeah I'm way to lazy to take the cans back

In my state if a landlord keeps your deposit without giving you a detailed write up on why it was necessary you can take them to court for up to 3 times your original deposit. So you may not get your deposit back, but you could end up a lot better off lol.

In Cali you have to do it within 14 days or something too, or you automatically are liable to pay in full + double or triple or something. It's very protective of renters. But lots of people don't know their rights.

You must have shitty land Lords I've given back deposits from eviction as long as they take all their shit so I don't have to clean it. What's 350 when you have to clean a entire house out.

What's 350 when you have to clean a entire house out.

350? Isn't security deposits equal to 1 month's rent??

My rent was $650, but I only had a $200 security deposit. I got it back when I moved out.

8 points · 3 months ago

Depends where you live, and what the landlord wants to set. I’ve had 1 month and I’ve had just a set $500.

Rent for me is $450. Granted the house is 100 fucking years old in a dead ass small town but eh.

Can you imagine the bathroom

Its pristine I bet.

Chicks dig a dude with a clean bathroom, make sure you wipe down the bottom of the toilet around back too.

Better yet, be the kind of person that never lets a thick paste of pubes, piss and bathroom grime collect around your toilet in the first place.

But I even dust mine before the gf comes over.

When I had my drinking problem my bathroom was always clean. There's nothing worse than throwing up in a dirty bathroom. The rest of my place was trashed though.

I always felt better barfing in dirty bathrooms for some weird reason.

Easier to throw up in a dirty bathroom too smh

Yeah, they're gonna have to completely re-do the interior at this point. Trash removal (at least they'll net a few hundred or more on the can deposits), rip carpet/flooring out, thoroughly scrub and sanitize the walls and every surface you can think of, fumigate the place because there's probably nasty varmints infesting it, and then new carpet/flooring, re-paint the walls and ceiling, etc. Not even covering any electrical or plumbing issues that might've cropped up from neglect.

I went through something like this when I was living alone in an apartment. I had this weird... thing about throwing out boxes, so I'd horde them. I was also drinking around a 30 pack of beer a day so the empties would pile up too much before I threw them out. I finally moved out because living alone wasn't good for me. The landlord said it took 3 days with all the doors and windows open before the smell started to fade. In the middle of all this there was a period where my drain was so clogged that it would take 30 minutes for a 3 minute shower to drain, and sometimes the sewage from other units would come into mine so I kinda stopped bathing. Depression is a bitch.

37 points · 3 months ago

Dang. Got me beat. I was up to about 18 a day before I got sober. April 28th will be two years.

Better. The reality has set in that I'll never be "good" again but I can aim to be alright most of the time.

Hey, just so you know, if you're doing alright then that's awesome! I'm proud of you!

Oregon too, as of this year. Nearly any container is 10¢ now. That house has thousands of dollars of deposit recycling.

Any container, less than 2 liters, whose contents are meant to be drank, with a metal, plastic, or glass container, except milk, hard alcohol, and wine. This hilariously includes marijuana beverages being specifically mentioned on the official flyer.

Edit: looks like this is locked now?

Here a baseline to compare to: 70,000 cans. I'm likely way off on my estimate, but there's still thousands of cans there. What do other rooms look like? What's out of frame?

1 more reply

I dunno maybe if you had free access to maybe I dunno, something like a mail truck perhaps. You may have something.

1 more reply

is there some kind of can deposit for money in the US too? in germany, if you bring cans back to a store, you get 25ct p.can, so that would at least get them a few bucks back.

Ya you get 5 or 10 cents each depending on which state you're in. Some states don't encourage recycling and thus won't give you the metal deposit back.

180 points · 3 months ago

Wait, what backwards ass state wouldn't encourage recycling?

177 points · 3 months ago

He probably meant direct recycling to get money. They'd rather have you recycle to the city waste disposal instead of a private recycler.

Only a theory but it makes sense to me.

34 points · 3 months ago

No one recycles in ky and lots of us still burn trash. Guess our state doesnt do much to encourage it

47 points · 3 months ago

You BURN your garbage? That's insane to me, we would be hit with fines out the wazzoo if we did that!

Now you know why everyone else thinks Kentucky is a bunch of hicks.

It's pretty common in rural areas in the US.

In my home state the thought of burning garbage is absolutely foreign to them, unheard of. My grandparents lived in an extremely remote part of Ky and we made the trip and visited for weeks at a time every single summer. There were hardly any neighbors but everyone there burnt their trash. It was the norm. Some places are simply so isolated that a garbage truck route isn’t feasible.

I know FL doesn't

Edit: i was referring specifically to not having a deposit on cans and bottles.

In some cities in FL it is illegal to put recyclables into normal trash (residentially at least). Though my apartment complex got rid of all their recycle bins since all the labels were faded off and nobody separated their recyclables.

You can take these to a scrap yard and get $$ for it. We saved up cans and other scrap metal for a year and got like $400. Granted it was between 25 people or so.

I think this guy drank enough for 25 people though.

I'd say that's about a years worth for me.

5 points · 3 months ago

You know that's not good for you, right? Maybe talk to someone about it? There's better ways to live my dude.

1 more reply

Just eyeballing but in Florida you'd probably get <$100 out of that. There's a suprisingly small amount of material in the cans. I send a 48"x48"x48" gaylord of pretty dense aluminum parts every week and we average $96 on it.

I gotta ask man, what's a gaylord?

I'm glad you did! As a logistics nerd this is exciting for me. A gaylord is the slang term for the bulk box originally developed by the Gaylord Container Corporation. It is a 4'x4'(or 40")x4' triple-wall cardboard box made with very high strength board. It fits on standard pallets for easy handling, it won't crush from tight banding, it can go on all transport modes, and compared to an actual wood crate they are dirt cheap.

Today I learned... Yay new fact for me to use randomly!

We used these at a scrap yard I worked to ship parts for remanufacturing.

In simple terms, you know those giant cardboard boxes at the grocery store that they fill with pumpkins or watermelons? It’s those boxes

Of course not. No surprise there.

Many states dont, but in those states there is always a private party willing to buy aliminum, usually by the pound

29 more replies

This is phrased so wrong - plenty of states encourage recycling but don't have you return cans for money.

Also when you return cans for money its s deposit you pay up front when you purchase the cans. The states that don't pay per can never ask for the money up front.

I've lived in Illinois, Michigan, and Minnesota. Illinois and Minnesota had free recycling at curbside. It was much easier and cleaner than hauling cans to the grocery store to return them lol!

States with deposits also have curb side recycling.

My dad decided that he was going to collect cans and use the money to pay for my college. He spent years picking up cans and bringing them home and bagging them. Had about half of his garage full of cans and loaded them up and brought them down to the recycling center. He got like $125. I’m pretty sure he has never picked up another can.

What state was this in? One 13 gallon bag of cans nets about 12$ here in Oregon.

12 points · 3 months ago

It just went up to $.10/can this year in OR.

Is Oregon one of the states where you pay the $.10 deposit?

I worked in a bowling alley in high school, and the manager would have us save all the beer cans - we'd get 2 or 3 industrial trash bags full on weeknights, 6 or 7 on weekends. He owned an apartment building, and would take the bags and throw 'em in the basement. In the summers when I'd get laid off, he would hire me for a few weeks to crush cans - he built a machine with a ramp that you'd feed the cans into, the machine would smash them flat and they'd drop out the bottom. Three weeks in a dark, unfinished basement crushing & rebagging cans, arms covered in year-old stale beer. When I was done we'd load them all in his truck (a commercial delivery van, I think it was previously a UPS truck) and he would take them to the scrap yard.

At some point the price of aluminum dropped so much he was only getting like six or seven hundred dollars for an entire UPS truck filled with flattened cans. He was paying me $125/week. He decided it wasn't worth the trouble and quit saving them after that.

It wasn't this bad and there weren't any beer cans, but I let my place get pretty terrible recently. I'm still cleaning up from it. Literally just got rid of my Christmas tree, leftovers from Thanksgiving are still in my fridge bad.

Got incredibly burnt out working insanely long hours for a few months straight. The energy just wasn't there. I can't say I was depressed because I never went to a professional, but I was definitely not in a good spot mentally.

Fast food was available late at night and easy. Soda was an easy energy boost. I'd pick some up on the way home, eat it, then pass out - refuse still on the floor by my couch. Repeat for a couple months.

The one or two people closest to me knew I was struggling, but to just about every one else I'm pretty sure I looked like any normal person.

Please don't be so quick to judge stuff like this. This is someone whose life is out of control and desperately needs help.

If you find yourself on this path, it's not your fault. You're doing the best you can but your mind isn't on your side.

There's help out there. But you have to be brave enough to take it. 1-800-273-8255

329 points · 3 months ago

More like a /r/cripplingalcoholism nest.

Dear God. That sub is just people talking about drinking a lot. Either it's a real good, real dark joke. Or it's very sad.

As an alcoholic that place was really necessary for me for a period of time. It's important to have people to talk with who understand what you're going through. Isolation is a huge problem for alcoholics.

Also the info there was truly helpful. I have no certainty but I imagine I'd be much worse off if I didn't learn about vitamins and supplements, tapering, how detox works, how to stay sober, etc.

Believe it or not a lot of people there want sobriety for others. Plenty have been through the ringer and it can be a valuable resource.

I haven’t been in that sub, but seeing this video I thought while it was pretty bad, it wasn’t too far off from what my bedroom looked like when I was at my worst. I am glad those days are behind me, but this is a vivid reminder of why I value my sobriety.

This is pretty much exactly what I would expect the house of someone who drinks Natural Ice to look like.

You know he accidentally drank from the wrong can at least once.

As the owner of a rental property, fuck this fucking asshole.

As someone who has considered renting out my property, shit like this is why I’d rather sell than rent out.

Most often the people I see who end up with renters like this are the ones who don't bother to thoroughly vet tenants and/or who keep low priced slummy properties that no one would live in unless they were desperate. Obviously it can happen to anyone, but putting in a bit of effort can really reduce your chances.

My mum's husband is a scummy landlord who's always scheming ways to rake in a few extra bucks, and he just decided to rent out their garage. I asked if they were renting it as a workspace, and she said, no as an apartment. I feel like it's only a matter of time before they're looking at a scene much like this.

It's not wort it. As a landlord you just write it off. You'll spend four times the amount in court trying to win, (and that's not counting your time outside of what your lawyer does). And even if you get a judgement, you'll never get a dime.

We had one once that had let some rent boys move in, and he just left everything and went to Canada. We had a fuck of a time getting them out, then putting it back in shape. I lived in the complex, very small, and these guys were literally just dead end street hustlers.

The owner still sends the guy a Christmas card every year, and he gets a letter from the guy every once in a while.

He may cut him some slack, but I'd like to throw him off a fucking building. He abandoned his wonderful cat, and it fell to me to take him to the city shelter as a 'left behind'.

Fuck that guy.

cash in the cans

keep the rent deposit.

sue in small claims for damages. easy win but rarely collect. maybe sell the judgment at a steep discount to a collection agency.

charge other tenants enough to make up for it.

find a guy like me to come do a cleanout. find another guy to inspect, repaint, repair. screen next tenant better.

i've been a landlord, but i'm also a depressed hoarder, so i get both sides of this.
