That's fucking disgusting

I could have sworn i remember seeing an incoming wormhole connect when the iris was closed once. I thought the splash would vaporize anything? Don't they have to close the iris after it connects?

Am I remembering wrong?

It's hard to say about the inevitability of 'crunch.' Software projects are notorious for being difficult to budget for time. Time overruns of ~30% or more are downright common, in all sorts of domains. Estimating the length of development projects is such a problem that it's become a mini field of study in its own right.

And so the extra problem with game development, particularly at large studios, is that these sort of games generally have deadlines that are hard to change. Marketing budgets are set (and spent) months in advance. Billboards are purchased, E3 events are planned, TV commercials are filmed and their timeslots bought. So when all of these are planned around a very specific date, getting deadline extensions can be difficult, or even impossible.

So they find the extra time the only other obvious way -- by having people work insane schedules. Unfortunately, this doesn't really work for a lot of reasons. Research has shown that simply throwing more people/man-hours per day at a programming task actually increases the amount of time it will take to solve. There's plenty of additional research showing that the efficiency of any employee peaks at under 40 hours per week, and beyond that, your employees are getting less productive with each extra hour worked. (I don't just mean diminishing returns, I mean people produce less at 10 hours per day than they would at 7 hours per day - particularly when you account for quality.)

It's really something that deserves more study, and a solution. Despite all the efforts at improving our estimation techniques, we aren't getting better as a profession at setting accurate deadlines. (I believe one study I read said even if you try to take into account the knowledge that software projects often overrun deadlines, and add some percentage of time to your first guess, you are still nearly equally as likely to experience significant overruns.) To me, this suggests a fundamental problem in the way large software projects are organized as a whole, as the project proceeds.

But of course, as you mentioned, one of the most consistently problematic issues is when non-technical managers plan a software project's deadlines based around business concerns. It's just a recipe for complete disaster.

There seems to be a growing focus on the obscene working conditions of those in games development. As a software dev, the stories I hear on occasion are genuine horror stories. Games programmers are some of the smartest and most skilled programmers in the industry, and the skill of the 3D artists, animators, and etc., who build the content is unparalleled as well. It's time these people were recognized appropriately.

so older sim cards did use more of of the space?

Actually no. I've examined a bunch of cards and it's always only behind the center of the gold patch. The actual chip is actually only about the width of the ball in a ballpoint pen (except its as flat as the card obviously)

The rest is just plastic, and metal contacts used to connect to the metal fingers inside the phone for data transfer. Those big contacts all lead into microscopic wires embedded in the center leading to that tiny hidden square which is the actual microchip.

What happens is your muscles need fuel to function - called ATP, made by a combination of glucose and respiration. Seeing as one of those two ingredients kinda stopped when a person dies (the respiration, also known as breathing) ATP stops being made.

But the neat thing is, ATP is what helps make muscles relaxed, not stiff. So for about 2 hours after you kick the bucket, you're still very much limp and flexible. After that 2 hours the ATP runs out and your muscles get locked in place. Starting at the smallest muscles as they don't have as big of a store house of ATP as the bigger ones do.

It stops agian in about 8 to 12 hours after death, depending on the environment, as that's when the muscles start to decay and break down. With the muscles becoming easier to tear and break, everything becomes starts to become floppy agian. Starting agian from smallest to largest, with the largest of leg muscles taking up to 2 days to become flexible agian (under ideal preservation).

It's important to note that this is a process, as in the body will slowly stiffen, then slowly relax agian. It's hardly like the body will just instantly lock up at 2 hours then loosen up at 18 hours. But it being a process allows for detectives and coroners to determine time of death. Kinda useful if you're investigating a potential murder.

Id like to subscribe to cogwheel facts please

It means to confront, or to rise up to a challenge.

"You gonna step to this(me)?" Is like "can you handle me/my skill" or in another sense "do you think you're good enough for this?" Or "if you think you're good enough, then prove it, come get me"... aka, "you gonna step to this?"

I'd lean towards the pleco. Big ole ball of algae is just a snack. If not the pleco then possibly the red finned shark.

My cluster of BNP fry and the parent pair never touched my marimo moss balls or a big patch of hairy algae that I put in there as an experiment. I'm pretty convinced they won't feed on hair algae at all.

It must have been the gouramies or the red tailed shark then

It's probably motion sickness. They are single camera setup shows. Another single cam setup is Modern Family

Compare against multi camera setups, such as Big Bang theory and basically all 80-90's sitcoms to get an idea of the difference.

Multi cam shows usually have the cameras stationary where single cam shows the cam is handheld and moving around constantly and can can make you seasick

You should check for tonsil stones. Check the back of your throats with a flashlight and look for little pieces of popcorn looking things stuck to the far back amongst the crevices. These stink to high heaven
