Most people spend two of their four years at their university primarily taking gen eds. I think that's pretty dumb. Gen eds serve the purpose of making students more "well-rounded", which I get, but I think only 1 year should be required.

GrislyMedic 3 points

I think all that gen ed was covered in high school and it's totally pointless. I really didn't need "art appreciation."

Greybol3 1 point

Yeah. I feel like that's what high school is for. For my art requirement, I took a dance history class in freshman year of college, even though I was an environmental science major.

Not badly at all. Metric is widely used and implemented in STEM degrees.

ergzay 12 points

This isn't true at all. Science yes, Engineering not so much (Math doesn't care about units). I took a bunch of Engineering courses in early 2010s (final degree was Computer Engineering, but started out with lots of Mechanical and Aerospace courses) and every single one had almost equal amounts metric vs imperial questions. Some textbooks would literally alternate every other question switching unit systems. My thermodynamics course was more imperial units than it was SI units.

Greybol3 1 point

Welp, so much for that lol. I was deeply under the impression that all STEM fields favored metric over imperial. My degree had nothing to do with engineering, let alone aviation, so I had no reason to think otherwise.

I am surprised that Slovakia made the cut given that none of the above (Croatia, Poland, and Hungary) qualified. Any thoughts as to why?

Greybol3 7 points

I looked it up on wikipedia and this data is from 2016, which is pretty recent. I still have no clue why IMF decided Slovakia was an "advanced economy," but Chile or Poland weren't. Maybe some weird idiosyncrasy in the formula they used. I'd assume if they made another map for 2018, it would be different.

zegigyerek 8 points

I'm just making a wild guess here but maybe because Slovakia uses the Euro, while the others don't.

Greybol3 5 points

I guess that explains why Greece and Latvia are blue.

Textbox clarifications should be concise and to the point. You mind editing it to be shorter?

Is this alright?

Yes. Thank you.

Lived in South Los Angeles for four years, and the last 10 years in one of the poorer suburbs of Seattle. I've seen zero gang violences. Because I'm not in any way affiliated with gang related things. The same is true of almost everyone not involved in gang related things.

Yikes.

Why does Washington have to exist at the same time as the state? It’s literally named after him...

Greybol3 0 points

I'm using that point to emphasize how he has almost nothing to do with the state.

RedBaboon 4 points

It's just a weird complaint to me given that the state is named after him. He's not on the flag for no reason or something like that.

Greybol3 4 points

I didn't say the outline of Washington being on this flag is for no reason (even if I think that reason is already pretty insignificant and stupid to begin with). I just think it doesn't do the state justice. It's dumb to put an outline of a president on the flag rather than something more evocative of the state. The inclusion of green is best part of the flag for me.

A lot of police forces are now wearing body cams or have undergone additional training.

In that sense, the movement has been successful.

I'd expect it to flair up again after another unjustified slaying of a black citizen where the cop goes unpunished.

Only time will tell when this will be, but no police force wants to be the culprit.

Greybol3 3 points

The inevitability of it is pretty shitty.
