It was a sticking point because Japanese dairy farmers use cheese to manage their excess inventory I guess. Japan makes fine cheeses as well, but it's definitely a luxury. You can't get a cheap Japanese cheese as good as European or American cheeses yet.

Yeah, a Japanese cheese actually won gold prize in a Swiss cheese competition. It was a soft cheese made with Hokkaido milk and smoked cherry blossoms. Still, most Japanese cheese is that nasty sweet and bland stuff.
