Unfortunately, too many comments are missing the trees from the forest here, which defeats the purpose of this subreddit so we are locking the thread.
Enjoy this for what it is... a culture that is taking a small but big step to normalize others that have been treated differently and harshly in the past. Or don't and take that conversation elsewhere.
This thread is locked due to excessive negativity and an apparent inability for some insecure folks to ignore progress as they cynically attack a 12 year-old girl. Take it up with CBS News, and a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all the others here that embody the intended spirit of this community!
EDIT: This story was shared here some time ago and we don't allow reposts so it has been removed: http://goedhartvoordieren.nl/?page=r/UpliftingNews/comments/7an6ub/how_flints_fight_for_clean_water_inspired/
That is literally every top story in /u/upliftingnews
We'll leave this post up temporarily as a reminder but as others here have stated, this is not "Uplifting News" and is better suited for /r/JusticePorn because this community should never be the place to celebrate something bad happening to somebody... even if they deserve it and even if they are a Nazi or ISIS. Hate breeds hate, and we need to make every effort to avoid that here and focus instead on kindness and compassion
Then delete it, practice what you preach. Don't let this stay on a subreddit about stories in which a bear befriends a kitten
It will be deleted later today
Disappointing to have to lock this thread due to all the glass half empty comments ignoring the simple point of this life saving assistance.
On an unrelated note, Happy Fathers Day to all the Dads out there!
The top mod /u/razorsheldon (and his alt /u/upliftingnews) is a whiny little twatwaffle.
Ah yes, you again. Still butthurt about getting called out for this I see:
But don't let me get in the way of your projections of who is the whiny one here.
Friendly reminder that you're in /r/UpliftingNews. We celebrate good news here and positive progress. I think we all know Saudi Arabia has a long way to go in their treatment of women, but that isn't a valid excuse to disregard the purpose of this community with excessive negativity and cynicism.
EDIT: And some subreddit called /r/AgainstHateSubreddits just banned me for posting this. I look forward to people looking out for each other and getting along again, hopefully sooner rather than later.
Really, you've done a lot with an honorary modship /u/StanGibson18
Not honorary at all. He's a full time starter on the squad!
Unfortunately we had to lock this thread as it is after midnight and some of the gremlins got water on themselves, but it was refreshing to see a number of the thoughtful comments from all of the Eagle Scouts in here!
I understand your gripe, but the /r/upliftingnews sidebar does say they'll remove negativity and cynicism. I think you'll have to agree what you said is cynical.
The cynical comment didn't result in the ban. The racist and the homophobic comments did though:
Let's be fair, upliftingnews was created for a decent purpose. They were tired of the constant bitching and conspiratorial nonsense on /r/politics and /r/news, so they decided to create a positive sub and occasionally generate some real action, such as donations to important causes.
^ ^ was obviously banned by an idiot, but there are bad apples on every sub's mods. Few of them are as absurdly awful/dystopian as /r/politics and /r/news.
Nah, not an idiot. There was a very valid reason for the ban that OP conveniently left out:
Load more comments
Hi /r/all. A friendly reminder that you're in /r/UpliftingNews. Normally we don't allow twitter post submissions, but this isn't a normal time and this gesture certainly fits the spirit here so we have granted an exception.
Please respect the rules and culture here, and anybody spewing excessive negativity or cynicism will be banned (including anybody whining about "virtue signalling").
And a big thanks to everybody else for helping keep this place the way it was intended!
EDIT: We are locking this thread because the comments have ceased focusing on this particular gesture. Students and green card holders that were coming home to America were suddenly and unexpectedly turned away and housing assistance for them was offered by a person/firm with influence. That's a nice gesture regardless of the politics or motives, which is worth appreciating regardless of the circumstances, as that is what we do here. Please feel free to head over to other threads on reddit if you would like to continue the 'discussion.'
Wonder when we'll see the daily reminder from /u/going_for_a_wank that "you cannot be racist against white people" regardless if they are disabled or you are shouting fuck white people at them...
Daily reminder that by definition you cannot be racist against white people.
Racism = Power + prejudice.
"The victim, who has special needs, was a high-risk missing person." No wonder this one got to you so badly - I guess you identify pretty strongly with the victim, eh buddy?
Sounds a lot like racism to me. How does your ridiculous definition exclude white people again?
we didn't really have to try and make you the bad guy. You did it to yourself
Bad guy for what?
I'm just going to pretend you really are that self unaware
I'm very aware... my question was a very simple one yet you chose not to answer it.
Clearly your first example is a reference to Laci Green.
There is a growing trend now to angrily oppose any negative racial generalizations and stereotypes... except those directed towards whites. This bigotry is apparently fair game and encouraged by the anti-racist 'tolerant' ones, yet when they are called out on this obvious hypocrisy, they get defensive and throw out accusations of white supremacy. This racist behavior needs to be called out for what it is, and more people need to condemn it so we can promote true tolerance and inclusion for all.
EDIT: Yup, and these chucklefuck racists are proving my point in real-time: http://goedhartvoordieren.nl/?page=r/circlebroke2/comments/5lneab/why_is_the_user_called_upliftingnews_promoting/
This is great progress. Next step is to get rid of all the smug racists over at MTV News that seemed to have no problem releasing this condescending race baiting video:
Is this sub getting shut down? :(
We'll always be here for you /u/Sharkey311!
Never thought we'd see a more controversial topic on reddit than male circumcision, but it appears cat declawing is the new undisputed champion. For those of you spouting death threats and suicide demands in a thread about banning the practice, perhaps it is time to take a break from the internet and get some fresh air outside.
Just kidding, that noise doesn't belong here. Feel free to recharge your batteries and take a break from the negativity of this campaign by browsing the thousands of prior positive, feel-good stories shared here!
Lots of passionate political folks in here. Unfortunately this isn't the place for these arguments, so we had to lock the thread.
While the first seamen pun was mildly amusing, it seems to undermine the significance of this decision and the progress the LGBTQ community has made in their relationship with the military over recent years.
So with that in mind, we have made the difficult decision to lock future comments in this post and face the wrath of people angry that they can't add further puns to this thread... a wrath we are more than happy to face in order to uphold the entire purpose of this community.
A friendly reminder that your are in /r/UpliftingNews. If you wish to have a passionate debate about racial relations in America, please take it elsewhere as this isn't the proper forum for these discussions.
As you can probably tell, we decided to lock this thread. Which is kind of ironic when you think about the actual story and the message here.
Reddit seems to pride itself on rallying behind the underdog and sticking up for the person getting bullied... unless they are a young courageous high school student that has decided she likes herself just the way she is and is not going to cry in the corner as a victim any longer when people are mean to her and make fun of her.
Her response to this situation showed a tremendous amount of character, and regardless of how you feel about overweight people, this was a story of somebody standing up to and rising above cowards hiding behind anonymous usernames... cowards she faces each and every day at school none the less. So here's to you Dee. Keep being you. You have inspired a lot of people today, and nobody can ever take that away from you.
EDIT: And here's her fundraiser link if you would like to contribute - https://www.gofundme.com/deesavesthewhales
If you're one of folks that came into the comments section here to ignore the purpose of this subreddit, ignore the kind gesture referenced in the story and ignore all other social norms and common decency as a human being just so you can spew some irrelevant hateful comments about muslims, go sit on a sharp pencil.
For everybody else, hope you're doing well and happy MLK Day.
Unfortunately we have had to lock this thread due to a high volume of cynical and negative comments that defy the entire purpose of /r/UpliftingNews.
It seems a number of folks simply read the headline and became upset about seeing the words FBI, tracking and database mentioned.
Other folks expressed their concerns about cruelty to farm animals, and while that is certainly an issue worthy of focus, this wasn't the place as this story has nothing to do with that.
And then you have your folks that look for every opportunity to rail against police and law enforcement, and willfully disregard context in order to do so... again, not welcome here if it has nothing to do with the story.
So to recap what this story was actually about, the FBI had historically lumped animal abuse cases into "other" crimes. Moving forward, they have created 4 new animal categories in their database (neglect, torture, organized abuse, and sex abuse). Apparently this will allow them to track trends and do other analytics the same way they categorize rapes and murders.
So apologies for having to lock the comments on this particular story. Feel free to comment in the actual linked story itself if you're still upset and need to vent to make yourself feel better. And no, this isn't censorship, this is moderating this community in the way it is and has always been intended.
