Haha it was stressful and fun at the same time.

so have you resolved your issue yet? I'm resigned to buying a new Pro Micro and soldering it on...

My issue was a bad solder job on the diode on the PCB. You can short some pins on a pro micro to generate some key strokes, which is how I verified that my pro-micro was functioning. Before investigating the PCB itself

I actually intend on writing a review on my thoughts of 4x12 vs 5x12 (planck and nyquist in my case)

My biggest defense for moving from a planck/nyquist/preonic vs a standard keyboard is:

1.) "Less is more" I find that by having less keys to traverse, I am actually much more accurate in my typing. Movement when it comes to typing feels much more fluid due to this as well versus lifting/moving your wrist around to reach certain keys.

2.)Ortho-linear - I can't quite put my finger on it (well physically I can :P) but typing on these does take some time to get used to, but once you do it honestly just feels really nice. I think this also contributes to my accuracy as my keys don't have to make as awkward movements when it comes to typing. Reaching for the "P" key with my pinky has never felt so good.

I would suggest looking at a preonic over a planck if you game, as I personally find the planck very limiting in regards to gaming, meanwhile the preonic has an additional row of keys (particularly the number row which is pretty crucial.

TL;DR Planck is great for just about anything except for gaming in my opinion. And it boasts the benefits of reduced wrist motion, and ortholinear keys so accuracy tends to improve.

And I currently have 4 boards, so get those numbers up rookie. :)

For physical devices, that can tftp boot such as the 2900/2800 series routers. I like to set the confreg to 0x2142, then tftp boot. By doing this, you are bypassing the need for an extra reload. This of course is only an option for physical equipment as I'm fairly certain it cannot be done in packet tracer.

Do you have discord? I'm willing to help you as practice for myself. Currently studying myself as well.

Beautiful set. This makes my wallet tingle.

my nyquists usb port fell off, meaning I could no longer use my left side as the master. However once I swapped master's my LED underglow stopped working, however I copied the exact pinouts just on the other side and sure enough its working again.

2 points · 14 days ago

Ah, those are still part of the backlight circuitry, so there is no real way to do that, unfortunately. It's all controlled by a single pin on the controller, so ... you're screwed, in that regards.

However, see the Px# pins? (eg PB1, PB2, PD1, etc), you can use those, actually. For RGB underglow, or for attaching LEDs to, to be controlled individually. So ... that may be the best option here.

After troubleshooting and really getting to learn my nyquist's pcb. I was thinking about this very thing and it seemed that LED controls whether it be backlight or underglow, seemed to be managed by a single pin. Good to know that I'm not the only one that's been curious of this.

Ah okay I'll give that a try. Was afraid of killing the buggers.

What does it matter if its a fresh kill that they eat verse one that dies in their jaws? as long as its not decomposed it would still hold the same nourishment alive or freshly killed from the cold.

Bought nyquist from /u/Zaddy_Magnum

It's almost as if they have an agenda.

People have this misconception that when someone does an ama they are usually some variation of a modern day freedom fighter and beyond reproach

As if being on reddit means they must be good and noble and not interested in making money or other non-enlightened things like that.

On the contrary this is a clearly their attempt to win people to their side with bias and bullshit because they have a specific agenda and want to be able to make money in peace. Plain and simple.

I must admit reading the initial post, had me question my preconceived notions however reaching this comment thread had re-introduced reason and reality back to me. I'm sorry that prohibition inhibits their work however legalization/decriminalization would make things worse. Just how the market works.

And people wonder why I want to go back to japan.

Hey, isn't this an example of the market actually fixing it tho?

I'm going to be put in a classroom environment and my Pale box blues on my planck are going to drive people mad. Lol I don't wish to part with an orthoboard for 3 months. Individual parts or pre-assembled are fine with me.

So $70 for the whole thing?

Jordan, A big fan of yours thank you so much for what you do. I must ask, have you seen the comic book about you? What are your thoughts on it? Would you ever review it on a video? Many others and I would absolutely love it!

My girlfriend at the time put a doll wig on my jimbo, broke out mascara and drew a face on it and sent to some friends within our social circles unsolicited. Alot of people at school saw it, but fortunately things didn't go "viral" back then... that could've gone horribly wrong lol.

The face of plank from ed edd and eddy...on a cock with a wig on it.

I may need to consider these, as my pale box blues I think are too noisy, and may be irritating for my neighboring cubicle.

Original Poster1 point · 2 months ago

You might want to pass. This one is very loud. I’m not that into loud switches now. Luckily on the feel side I like my box red and white better.

After doing some research haha you are without a doubt correct I assumed, however I was definitely mistaken.

Box switchs + o rings

Is possible? Has anyone tried? Please share your experiences.

Yes. /u/tinnnnnnnn linked a post I made showing how to silence BOX switches. I now have a full keyboard of BOX Royals that are silenced using that method. They are quieter than MX switches with O-Rings in my experience. Also, since the ring is touching the spring, it greatly reduces ping noises. I had very bad pinging before the O-Ring mod, but now I can't hear any pinging.

I may to a sound demo soon if my surroundings are quiet enough.

I'd love to see a sound demo. Is the modification simple?

It does require opening the switch. But installing the ring is very easy. I would place it in the housing and then use a pick to push it to the bottom. Maybe took an hour to do 75 switches.

Original Poster2 points · 2 months ago

Will that also reduce the noise from the switch itself? I'm currently using pale blue's. Or does it just reduce the bottom out noise?

Is the planck still available?

What are some quiet alternatives to the pale blue box switches?

I've become self-conscious of the usage of my planck keyboard with pale blue box switches as I think they are just ridiculously loud. I really like the design of the box switch and the tactile feel, however I'm looking for an quieter alternative.

Would the black box switches be the quiet version of the pale blue box switches?

I'm looking for a box switch that is heavy, tactile, and quiet. Any suggestions?

Box black switches are linear and won’t have that tactile feel you’d like. Maaaaaybe check out those Aliaz silent switches? I don’t have any experience with them though.

After looking around I think the "Heavy Burnt Orange" may be the switch I'm looking for. Though the stem is different which now begs the question...does the stem matter?

Original Poster1 point · 2 months ago

Still available and the tealios Are the super smooth linear switches. Very quiet. It is the I between weight of a cherry red and black. But 100x smoother

Best recommendation I can give as someone who's new to this as well. Look at some others code and kind of identify the patterns, in the code, emulate those patterns and try to compile the code. whoever designed the compiler had love for the non-programmers, as it will often point out errors in your code. Now if you can't figure what you did wrong. I'm sure someone here much more experienced would be happy to point out the errors in your code.

Keymap help. Close but no cigar.

Trying to get the concept of adding layers and moving to them and what not. Added a new layer named "NUMPAD" created a key for NUMPAD and EXT_NUMPAD I believe I gave those custom keycodes proper parameters for what I'm trying to do.

Any help is appreciated. Link to my keymap:

output I'm getting when I attempt to compile.

Compiling: keyboards/planck/keymaps/fractal31/keymap.c keyboards/planck/keymaps/fractal31/keymap.c:190:1: error: expected identifier or '(' before '[' token [_NUMPAD] = { ^ [ERRORS] | | | make[1]: *** [.build/obj_planck_rev5_fractal31/keyboards/planck/keymaps/fractal31/keymap.o] Error 1 make: *** [planck/rev5:fractal31] Error 1 Make finished with errors

Your layer is not in the keymap part of your code. Try moving line 174 to line 195.

Original Poster1 point · 2 months ago

That worked brilliantly. Now I was trying to figure out why my EXT_NUMPAD wasn't working properly...and I'm pretty certain now after looking at the code, is that its due to the fact that my NUMPAD keycode is setting the numpad layer as the default layer therefore turning the layer off basically does nothing, because its the default layer.

Learning QMK - Editing or building from scratch?

I successfully managed to make small modifications to a keymap however alot of the code below the keymaps (in the keymap file) I presume defines how layers work on the Planck. I ideally wanted to test toggling vs momentary layers.

As someone who wants to learn to be proficient with editing my keyboard do you recommend I do small edits from the default configuration or should I be building the configuration from scratch?

I suggest reading the documentation as you find new things you want to try, and modifying your keymap implementing those things.

I'll take your suggestion and run with it. So to state my current objective, creating static layer that serves as a numpad. If I run into hiccups I'll post on this thread. Maybe later on down the road have it also act as a MO layer as well for shorter strings of numbers
