As soon as I saw David's rating I checked out Ebert's review and was surprised he gave it 3/4 saying he loved how crazy it went.

Plus then you could probably spend like a full season with Padme learning to love her as a character and then the reveal that she was Queen at the end of the season would feel like a legitimate twist instead of in the film when it's just like oh...okay.

Too bad he doesn't have two or three more films. Richard Kelly would be a great BC canidate.

He's why Ghost Town works imo. Man remember when we thought Ricky Gervais could be a romantic lead?

At least there's a great fight scene between Jet Li and Donnie Yen in both Once Upon a Time In China II and Hero.

I wonder if trailer companies bet each other who can make a dark and moody version of the cheesiest pop song possible.

Whoever can do it for Aqua's "Barbie" first wins the whole game.

I remember thinking Dawn of the Dead (2004) was so clever for doing this but now it's been done so many times it's a total cliche.

Her final monologue about going to the other side was some of the best acting I've ever seen.

Box Office Week: Rampage takes #1 with underwhelming $34.5M while A Quiet Place has excellent second weekend with a 35% drop to #2 with $32.6M. Meanwhile, Truth or Dare opens to solid #3 with $19M and Isle of Dogs has weak wide release expansion coming in at #7 with $5M. by mi-16evil in movies

Films not on follow list with updates

  • A Quiet Place - It seems we do indeed have another runaway horror hit as the John Krasinski directed film had an excellent second weekend dropping just 35% to come in #2 with $32.6M. This is a very similar drop that Split and Get Out had on their second weekends, so expect A Quiet Place to stick around as counter-programing through the blockbuster season approaching. Right now the film's domestic gross is just inches away from $100M with $99.6M. That means the film will pass $100M domestic by today, reaching the goal in just 11 days, which is 5 days faster then Get Out and 8 days faster than Split. We are looking at a film that could easily pass $150M and may even reach to $200M domestic. Not bad for a $17M film that's mostly done in silence.

General updates

  • Steven Spielberg - It was a solid weekend for Ready Player One which managed to pass $100M domestic this week and become the second highest grossing film of 2018 so far. It is also just about to pass a massive $200M in China, the highest ever for a Warner Bros film. However the real notable milestone was for its director Steven Spielberg who became the first director in history to have a combined worldwide gross of $10B. Part of what makes this so impressive is that Spielberg has done so without any of his films passing $1B worldwide and over the course of 40 years without adjusting for inflation. It seems fitting that a film that celebrates just how influential Spielberg was to pop culture that cemented him this milestone achievement.

Notable film closings

  • The 15:17 to Paris - The latest in the series of Clint Eastwood directorial efforts about recent American heroic figures closed this week to an okay if underwhelming $36.2M domestic and $56.1M on a budget of $30M. The film took an interesting approach in telling the story of the 2015 Thalys train attack by casting the real 3 men who stopped a terrorist attack on a train. The results for critics and audiences were not great with many criticizing their obvious limitations as actors. The film opened much lower than Sully and American Sniper and never quite captured the attention of the middle America crowds that drove those two films.

Wow that is maybe the most pre-9/11 movie trailer I've ever seen. Even ends with an awful gay panic joke.

So what in saying is I'm buying this on VHS immediately.

Wow that is...an interesting group of things. He also appears to be in a teen cancer movie starring Jaden Smith and Cara Delevingne.

Side note look at that horrible run from 2008-2013 of cheap VOD action movies. That's...rough.

For me it's Stay Alive, which was infamous for the trailer line "if you die in the game, you die for real!" (which isn't even said in the actual film).
