I saw an antique bamboo fly rod with box at an antique shop. It was 50 buck, I do not know the dimensions of it. I am going back in sometime this week to pick it up is there anything I should look for regarding condition, brand wear and tear? What brands have held up when it comes to bamboo fly rods, is specific care required for them? Is 50 dollars a reasonable price. I would like to use it. Thanks.

BUY/COMMISSION. I’m looking to buy a waxed canvas knife roll. •SPECS: -My largest knife is a 12 inch meat carver. -10 inch chefs knife -8 inch chefs knife -4 inch paring knife

I will want to add more eventually but probably not much bigger than 12 inches. I also wouldn’t mind a slot for a sharpening steel if possible. I prefer waxed canvas with it being a more simple design, leather string to tie it closed and a flap to flip on top of the knife before closing. All are carbon steel so they a prone to rust. water will rust them and they can bend. Thanks. Ps: I’m open to suggestions, this this more of a rough outline. I don’t mind people throwing out ideas.

Edit: budget 180 dollars, open to suggestions just laying out a rough baseline of what I want open to almost anything 10 slots for knives biggest knife 12 inch blade with room for a cleaver. Thanks, any questions dm me. open to leather but I do not want it too bulky or stiff. Thank y’all.

Stripped what I’m hoping is the screw it’s self and not threads where the screw sits inside the handle on my spydiechef. Major f up on my end. I am wondering if this is common with the spydiechef and or Spyderco. I didn’t use too much tension when unscrewing it for the first time and it’s a pain to get the screw to sit properly to hold the wire pocket clip and grasp the threads to tighten down. Side question are the T8 screws for the spydiechef the same. Meaning are they interchangeable with the T8 pivot screws. Thanks.

I think screws on Spydiechef are made from titanium for being rust free. Of course it is way softer than steel. Maybe try to contact Spyderco support.

Yeah that’s the thing though I hope it’s the screws I ordered a new set on eBay and the three big one pocket clip and two pivot ones are interchangeable right?

@3:00 minutes in the video Theo Von makes the same “mmmhhhmmm” sound that Dyson does during the debate. Thought it was funny.

Just a little discussion. Any discussion or idea on what y’all will be getting next or want to get is appreciated.

Spyderco Drunken Has anyone pre ordered the Drunken? Does anyone plan on picking it up when it’s released? I’ve been contemplating on picking up the Drunken when it comes out, however 400 dollars is a lot for a knife that I intend on using. What are your thoughts on it and/or other knives. Thanks!

Nice. I wanted one a few months ago but I didn’t pull the trigger. How do you like it?

Can’t speak to everyone else’s infatuation, but they do a lot of mid-techs and the prices are fairly reasonable. Built like a brick shithouse.

Setup I’m running now: Rod- Orvis Clearwater • length 9’ • wt. 3 5/8 OZ. • 6wt line (number 14 under this on the rod)

Reel- Orvis Clearwater LA II for line weights 4-6, 5.5 oz., 3⅜" diameter

Line- Orvis Clearwater WF-6-F N20 Color- Green

Backstory: got in to fly fishing a few years ago and I bought this rod, reel and line from Orvis as a beginner setup. I really enjoy it, with fly fishing being the only fishing I do now. I fish for pan and bass in ponds some large some small, for the most part.

I’m looking for advice on what to get if I need something new when it comes to the rod and reel and with it being about 5 years since I got this setup I’m assuming I need new line. I’m in Colorado right now and I will be doing some fishing this week trout and what not. -if I could also have someone explain what line, taper and tippet I should get if I keep this setup I have now. setup pictures

Just picked up rio gold WF-6-F I’ll keep y’all posted thanks to all for the info!

If it ain't broke don't fix it. If you are just itching to get something new consider adding a 4wt rig to augment the 6wt. Eventually a lot of us wind up up with a quiver of rods to cover different situations. Or, just stick with what you've got and have fun.

I went with rio gold WF-6-F line instead of a new setup. As much as I want a new rod & reel in 4 wt I’m gonna hold off. He line should do for now from what everyone said, thanks for the reply.

I plan on buying one from NW but until I get lucky enough I will make do. All reply’s are welcome along with any tips. Thanks!

Knives I will mainly be sharpening are: Spydiechef (LC200 N) Benchmade Bushcrafter (S30V

Wrist shot?

Still for sale?

I used some cheap vegge tan leather from hobby lobby smooth side up glued with spray adhesive to a scrap board and the white compound in the left package from Ryobi you have pictured and it works brilliantly for me.

I got that leather from hobby lobby as well I was going to do one side smooth other side rough but I butchered one piece pretty badly lol

Original Poster2 points · 3 months ago

I’m making a strop and I’m wondering which side I should place down and what the differences are for the blade edge regarding the rough and smooth side of the leather. Along with which polish compound I should use. Lastly do I need to condition the leather before I load it I have some leather boot polish I was thinking about using but I have no idea. Thanks.

Hey people! You left Nacet out of the party??!

I am looking to buy a Spydie Chef and was wondering if a “2.0” version will be coming out anytime soon or if there are rumors floating around. Along with thoughts on the knife as well. Thanks. All comments and thoughts will be appreciated!

Bought this for a camping trip, this weekend and future trips as well. What are the thoughts on it? Steel isn’t a super Steel and I don’t know too much about knives.

Well it’ll be put to the test this weekend lol I love the way it looks, feels good and I assume it’ll do what I need it to do for me so I like it. A lot.

S30V is most definitely a super steel, it just isn't the flavor of the month.

Personally I'm not really a fan of super steels for folders let alone outdoors knives. Simple steels like 1095 are far tougher so you can get just as much strength from a thinner blade. You're also going to be far less likely to chip the edge at any given edge angle. Alternatively, you can go with a much thinner/lower angle edge to increase cutting performance without having to worry about damage. And if you do manage to damage the edge, 1095 is going to be far easier to repair.

You are just simply not going to run into highly abrasive materials out in the woods so the advantages of super steels are largely wasted there. The only time you are is if you are carving up dirty wood or digging in the ground, but that causes all sorts of unusual behavior in super steels.

Of course, the reality here is that none of this is going to matter a hill of beans on a casual weekend camping trip. Things like how it looks and how it feels in your hand are far more important there.

Hey I’m new here I looked through the sidebar, I’ll saw knife recommendations based on price. I’m looking for something for EDC normal non abusive task. However I want something that can handle tougher task, ones for the outdoors. Nothing too expensive. $100-$250. Also what is a good sharpening stones preferably a set, or two sided stone that varies in grit. Thanks for the suggestions anything is welcomed.

As far as EDC knived that can take a beating, I'd recommend the following

Spyderco Shaman: https://www.bladehq.com/item--Spyderco-Shaman-Compression-Lock--71268

ZT0562CF: https://www.bladehq.com/item--Zero-Tolerance-0562CF-Carbon-Fiber--21521

Lost of popular knives can be found for 10-20% off the retail price in like new condition over on r/knife_swap so you might take a look there when you decide on a model you like

This will be your best bet for sharpening, especially if you don't have much experience sharpening freehand: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000B8L6LS/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1527252561&sr=8-3&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=lansky+diamond+sharpening+system&dpPl=1&dpID=51hP8Or62TL&ref=plSrch
