Texas's requirements:

You need to achieve at least 150 semester hours of credit and at least a bachelor's degree. Your courses must include:

  • One face-to-face, traditional classroom-style three-semester hour ethics course that covers ethical theory; AICPA, SEC and the Board’s accountancy rules; core values; independence; objectivity; integrity and ethical reasoning. A link to Board-approved ethics courses may be found here.
  • 30 semester hours of upper –division accounting courses which should include subjects such as:
    • Managerial/cost accounting
    • Financial accounting, that may include up to 9 semester hours of intermediate accounting; advanced accounting; and accounting theory
    • Financial statement analysis
    • Internal accounting control and risk assessment
    • Auditing and attestation services
    • Taxation (must take at least 2 semester house and can take up to 12 semester hours, including tax research and analysis)
    • Accounting research and analysis (must take at least 2 semester hours)
    • Accounting information systems (up to 12 semester hours)
    • Financial accounting/reporting for government/nonprofit organizations
    • International accounting and financial reporting
    • Fraud examination
    • Public accounting coursework (up to 3 semester hours)
    • Accounting internship (not longer than 3 semester hours, and not taken until you have completed 12 semester hours of upper level accounting courses)
  • 24 semester hours of upper-level business courses, with no more than 6 semester hours in any subject area. Subjects may include:
    • Information systems/technology
    • Areas related to accounting
    • Finance
    • Statistics and quantitative methods
    • Business or accounting communications (you must take at least 2 semester credit hours in upper-level coursework in this subject)
    • Marketing
    • Management
    • Economics
    • Business law (includes Uniform Commercial Code)

Maine's requirements:

To qualify for the examination, you must:

  • Be of good character and reputation; and
  • Have earned at least a baccalaureate or higher degree conferred by a regionally accredited college or university acceptable to the Board and completed at least 120 semester hours of college level education; and
  • Have completed 15 semester hours in one or more of the topics listed below. At least 3 semester hours must be earned in auditing and attestation services.
    • financial accounting and reporting for business organizations
    • financial accounting and reporting for government and not-for-profit entities
    • auditing and attestation services
    • managerial or cost accounting
    • taxation
    • fraud examination
    • internal controls and risk assessment
    • financial statement analysis
    • accounting research and analysis
    • tax research and analysis
    • accounting information systems
    • ethics relevant to the practice of public accounting

If you have conditional credit, you will be permitted to continue to sit for the examination. If your conditional credit is expired, you must successfully complete the basic courses in accounting and auditing before taking any additional sections of the examination.

Note: You shall be required to meet the 150 semester hour educational requirement to obtain a CPA License in the State of Maine.

The baccalaureate degree and 120 semester hours must be complete within 120 days following the actual date you took your first test section, or scores will not be released and credit for any completed part of the examination will not be given. The basic courses in accounting and auditing must be complete at the time of application. All educational transcripts, Certificate of Enrollments, and/or foreign evaluations are required to be submitted to CPA Examination Services. You may submit official school transcripts, Certificate of Enrollments and/or foreign evaluations separately or included with the first-time application.

  • Twenty-four semester hours (thirty-six quarter hours) or the equivalent in accounting subjects of which at least fifteen semester hours must be at the upper level or graduate level (an upper level course is defined as a course that frequently carries completion of a lower level course(s) as a prerequisite); and
  • Twenty-four semester hours (thirty-six quarter hours) or the equivalent in business administration subjects at the undergraduate or graduate level.
