TIL that Robert Smalls who born into slavery stole a confederate military ship, disguised himself as a captain, used a secret code book and hand signals to pass Confederate guard ships, rescued slaves and families, worked as military advisor to the union until war ends and ran for Congress and won.

I came here looking for this one.

I was going to say

"You're killing me, Smalls" - Rival Confederate Captain, probably.

level 1

On the evening of May 12, Planter was docked as usual at the wharf below General Ripley's headquarters. Her three white officers disembarked to spend the night ashore, leaving Smalls and the crew on board. About 3 a.m. Smalls and seven of the eight slave crewmen made their previously planned escape to the Union blockade ships. Smalls put on the captain's uniform and wore a straw hat similar to the captain's. He sailed the Planter past what was then called Southern Wharf, and stopped at another wharf to pick up his wife and child, and the families of other crewmen.

Smalls guided the ship past the five Confederate harbor forts without incident, as he gave the correct signals at checkpoints. The Planter had been commanded by a Captain Relay, and Smalls copied Relay's manners and straw hat on deck to fool Confederate onlookers from shore and the forts. The Planter sailed past Fort Sumter at about 4:30 a.m. He headed straight for the Union Navy fleet, flying a white bed sheet as a surrender flag. The Planter had been seen by the USS Onward, which was about to fire until a crewman spotted the white flag. The Onward′s captain, John Frederick Nickels, boarded the Planter, and Smalls asked for a United States flag to display. He surrendered the Planter and her cargo to the United States Navy. Smalls' escape plan had succeeded.

Smalls was made a pilot by the Union army for his bravery and served in 17 battles during the war. He also continued to run humanitarian missions of taking food and supplies to freedmen who lost their homes and livelihoods during the war.

Smalls later won election to the United States House of Representatives in South Carolina.

Mmmm I don’t think that’s factually accurate... The South didn’t become a Republican stronghold until Reagan, and then it went Blue under Clinton, then back again under W. Out of 1600 Democrats continuously elected until death from 1860 until present day, only 13 ever switched to be Republican. Including Democrats that voted against the Civil Rights Act.

Yeah I did. He may be personally, I don’t know; but what he’s said about the history of the two parties is true. I’m never going to believe some shit someone tells me about history unless it can be proven and is well documented. I’ve checked his claims and they are factually correct. To say the parties “switched” is pretty dishonest.

Go find something he’s said about this that’s a lie. And watch my third link. There are no lies. You’re being hoodwinked. I’m a Native American; I know a thing or two about being deceived.

A lot of these posts don’t help your argument, you know... and the ones that do are from the same commenter. LOL

level 10

Extensive usage of /r/askhistorians which is a leftist tilted sub on a leftist social media platform in a non-scientific, non-academic, and non-professional setting is by NO means an appropriate method to provide quality non-biased sourcing.

level 10

This is a lot of the SAME fucking argument that's being refuted by not only Dinesh, but TONS of people who've delved deeper into the specifics of these claims.

Asking for precise dates and significant numbers indicating a true shift ALWAYS results in a muddy nebulous of odd quotes, insignificant figures and poof: "party of racism".

The essential English leadership secret does not depend on particular intelligence. Rather, it depends on a remarkably stupid thick-headedness. The English follow the principle that when one lies, one should lie big, and stick to it. They keep up their lies, even at the risk of looking ridiculous

-- Joseph Goebbels

The southern strategy is not the same as the false “party switch” revisionist history.

The party switch revisionist history says that racist democrats literally switched sides. This is by and large not accurate.

In terms of targeting the south being a negative quality the Republican Party must be doing pretty good if the best it’s opponents can do is slander an entire wide geographic region with wide-ranging false accusations of racism and then attribute that to the party somehow.

Furthermore let’s examine the demographics targeted by the modern Democrat party: Felons, Baby Murderers, Drug Fanatics, Racist terrorist groups such as Hamas and BLM.

Hey I heard the KKK has like 50 members and most aren’t even Republicans though. So clearly that’s a MUCH larger problem.

level 7

Racist terrorist groups such as Hamas and BLM.

goddamn pesky blacks again asking for equal rights & treatment.

That's one giant leap, jackass. Only in your dumbass echo chamber can you get away with such lazy and poorly conceived comparisons.

You're not being "brigaded" by "altright" folks.

You're being taken to task by people who are done being called racists (and "uncle Toms") for being real.

try not to deny poor people healthcare & immigrants opportunities & talk about how black on black crime is way > worse so cops can shoot them down like dogs on the streets too much ok?

Numbers kiddo. Numbers back up the fact that black on black crime is far worse than police.

Healthcare isn't a "right". Access to healthcare is a right. Everyone has the right to get a job. Everyone has the right to seek treatment for their ills. Everyone has the right to earn their way.

With freedom comes responsibility. Those who are not willing to live responsibly, pay dearly for that decision. Our freedom to succeed comes with a risk of failing. This is America; working as intended.

Turns out, you're the actual "alt" faction.

Alt Reality

You are the Socialists. The Communists. The anti-Capitalists. The "gimme-gimme's". You create a culture of victimhood so you can broaden your base of dependency. Instead of empowering those who need help, everyone's a victim. "It's HIS fault! Get him!" You're sick.

The party's drawing to a close for you folks though. We grow stronger as more people start to do their due diligence. It's not about race. It's about liberty for all. This is America.

They would portably mess it up. There where no big fights, the officers left the boat and the crew sailed it away.

They would turn it form a well though out plan that went off without a hitch to an action packed brawl. Remember what they did to Bilbo's escape in the barrels?

Could do it heist movie style instead of action movie

According to Wikipedia, he avoided landing - he only had to fool observers from the shore or from the Confederate forts he passed, not up-close. To accomplish that, he wore the captain's uniform and straw hat (presumably pulled down over his face a bit), and adopted his mannerisms.

level 2

It was in the middle of the night, and he just put the captain uniform on.

level 2

It's almost as if political parties don't believe in anything and will eventually back anyone, if it means they get power.

level 3

Astute observation sir/ ma'am

level 4

That's not even mentioning the fact that just because people were against slavery, didn't mean they were for the integration of freed black slaves into 'white' society. in fact, many emancipators were also proponents of sending former slaves to Liberia, rather than having them competing with whites for low skill jobs.

Life was very different back then and it would be foolish to compare how people thought in the 1800s to how people think in the 21st century without taking that into account. Hell, it would almost be as retarded as comparing the Republican and Democratic party of the late 1800s to the Republican and Democratic party of 2018.

level 2

Lmaooo you’re joking right?

level 3

Nope. he was a republican who stood up against the tyranny of the democratic party. Open a history book. He is a great example to all Republicans to stand up to the racism of Democrats

level 4

Also for gamers to rise up against sjw

level 4

The only thing similar between the Republican Party of two centuries ago and the Republican Party today is the name. By the time the Civil Rights movement rolled around in the 1960s, Democrats, not Republicans, were the major backers of civil rights, thus leading them to lose major support among Southern whites and causing these anti-equality whites to flee to the Republican Party—the same one that exists today in 2018.

In short, the parties switched places. The old conservatives (Democrats) became today’s liberals, and the old liberals (Republicans) became today’s conservatives.

level 5

In June of 1964, though, the bill came up again, and it passed...over the strenuous objections of Southern Democrats.  80% of House Republicans voted for the measure, compared with just 61% of Democrats, while 82% of Republicans in the Senate supported it, compared with 69% of Democrats.

Nearly all of the opposition was, naturally, in the South, which was still nearly unanimously Democratic and nearly unanimously resistant to the changing country.  One thing that most assuredly didn't change, though, was party affiliation.  A total of 21 Democrats in the Senate opposed the Civil Rights Act.  Only one of them, "Dixiecrat" Strom Thurmond, ever became a Republican.  The rest, including Al Gore, Sr. and Robert Byrd--a former Exalted Cyclops in the Ku Klux Klan--remained Democrats until the day they died.

Moreover, as those 20 lifelong Democrats retired, their Senate seats remained in Democrat hands for several decades afterwards.  So too did the overwhelming majority of the House seats in the South until 1994, when a Republican wave election swept the GOP into control of the House for the first time since 1952.  1994 was also the first time Republicans ever held a majority of House seats in the South--a full 30 years after the passage of the Civil Rights Act.

level 6

As you mentioned, this decision by the Democratic Party officially severed its cozy relationship with the Southern whites that had supported them up until that point. It’s only after the Civil Rights Act passes that the you begin to see the demographic shift in support for both parties. The Southern whites who hated the legislation fled from the Democratic Party to the Republican Party, thus setting the stage for the Republican Party’s conservative shift:

“The bill divided and engendered a long-term change in the demographic support of both parties. President Johnson realized that supporting this bill would risk losing the South's overwhelming support of the Democratic Party. Both Attorney General Robert Kennedy and Vice President Johnson had pushed for the introduction of the civil rights legislation. Johnson told Kennedy aide Ted Sorensen that "I know the risks are great and we might lose the South, but those sorts of states may be lost anyway.” Senator Richard Russell, Jr. later warned President Johnson that his strong support for the civil rights bill "will not only cost you the South, it will cost you the election". Johnson, however, went on to win the 1964 election by one of the biggest landslides in American history. The South, which had five states swing Republican in 1964, became a stronghold of the Republican Party by the 1990s.”

In short, post-1964 is when the parties switch places: Democrats become the more liberal party and Republicans the more conservative party. Naturally, since the Southern whites who had previously supported the Democrats now identified with the Republicans, the Republican Party started to cater its platform to appeal to them, which led to decreased intra-party support for racially progressive legislation. At the same time, support from minority groups began shifting significantly to the Democrats, thus completing the role reversal and cementing the Democratic Party as the party of civil rights.

Never heard about him in any history class after 17 years of schooling, and that may just be partially what's wrong with this country.

level 2
2 points · 1 month ago

History classes tend to teach things that are historically relevant, and/or things that have an effect on us today.

This is neither.

level 3

School in general is to train you to be docile and to not be a social deviant. Which is why they avoid polarizing topics. The education system is not designed to encourage you to "fight the power". Or question social norms.

level 4

Lmao what the fuck

level 5

I know right? Lol what? School definitely teaches you to be an introspective individual who questions all facets of society.

level 6

Fuck off you retarded freak.

level 7

Oh no you hurt my feelings! That wasn't very nice of you! What ever shall I do????????

level 8
1 point · 1 month ago · edited 1 month ago

Look, why are you trying to push some crazy anti-school agenda in a thread where we were just talking about history classes? Your initial comment is tangentially related at best.

Then you go and degrade people for being normal, and spin your comment as an attack on people who aren't social deviants - and state "The education system is not designed to encourage you to fight the power" as if it should be??

The education system is designed to provide people with the skills and knowledge they need to function in society in whichever role they lean toward at the end. Saying it's "not designed to encourage you to fight the power" is retarded beyond belief.

Obviously school is not designed for that.
School also isn't designed to popularise the usage of purple coffee cups.
School also isn't designed to increase the profit margins of cake shops in Cairns, Australia.

That's such a non sequitur that any average person is instantly going to shy away from you and make an (admittedly relatively small) effort to remove you from their lives, as you're obviously the kind of person that is displeasing and tiring to interact with. (as evidenced by this chain of comments.)

level 9

That was an incredibly intelligent and interesting comment. Obviously a lot of thought put into it. And yet...I could not find less fucks to give.
